Il y avait dans le pays d'Uts, un homme dont le nom était Job; cet homme était intègre, droit, craignant Dieu et se détournant du mal.

 There was a man [0376] in the land [0776] of Uz, [5780] whose name [8034] [was] Job; [0347] and that man [0376] was perfect [8535] and upright, [3477] and one that feared [3373] God, [0430] and eschewed [5493] evil. [7451]

 Et il lui naquit sept fils et trois filles;

 And there were born [3205] unto him seven [7651] sons [1121] and three [7969] daughters. [1323]

 Et il possédait sept mille brebis, trois mille chameaux, cinq cents paires de bœufs, cinq cents ânesses, et un très grand nombre de serviteurs, et cet homme était le plus grand des enfants de l'Orient.

 His substance [4735] also was seven [7651] thousand [0505] sheep, [6629] and three [7969] thousand [0505] camels, [1581] and five [2568] hundred [3967] yoke [6776] of oxen, [1241] and five [2568] hundred [3967] she asses, [0860] and a very [3966] great [7227] household; [5657] so that this man [0376] was the greatest [1419] of all the men [1121] of the east. [6924]

 Et ses fils allaient les uns chez les autres et se donnaient un repas chacun à leur jour, et ils envoyaient convier leurs trois sœurs à manger et à boire avec eux;

 And his sons [1121] went [1980] and feasted [4960] [6213] [in their] houses, [1004] every one [0376] his day; [3117] and sent [7971] and called [7121] for their three [7969] sisters [0269] to eat [0398] and to drink [8354] with them.

 Et quand le cercle des jours de festin était achevé, Job envoyait chercher ses fils pour les purifier, et se levant de bon matin, il offrait un offrande à brûler pour chacun d'eux; car Job disait: Peut-être mes fils ont-ils péché, et ont-ils renié Dieu dans leurs cœurs. Ainsi faisait Job toujours.

 And it was so, when the days [3117] of [their] feasting [4960] were gone about, [5362] that Job [0347] sent [7971] and sanctified [6942] them, and rose up early [7925] in the morning, [1242] and offered [5927] burnt offerings [5930] [according] to the number [4557] of them all: for Job [0347] said, [0559] It may be [0194] that my sons [1121] have sinned, [2398] and cursed [1288] God [0430] in their hearts. [3824] Thus did [6213] Job [0347] continually. [3605] [3117]

 Or, il arriva un jour que les fils de Dieu étant venus se présenter devant YEHOVAH dans leur culte solennel, la contrepartie se trouva aussi au milieu d'eux;

 Now there was a day [3117] when the sons [1121] of God [0430] came [0935] to present [3320] themselves before the LORD, [3068] and Satan [7854] came [0935] also among [8432] them.

 Et YEHOVAH dit à la contrepartie: D'où viens-tu? Et la contrepartie répondit à YEHOVAH, et dit: De courir çà et là sur la terre et de m'y promener.

 And the LORD [3068] said [0559] unto Satan, [7854] Whence [0370] comest [0935] thou? Then Satan [7854] answered [6030] the LORD, [3068] and said, [0559] From going to and fro [7751] in the earth, [0776] and from walking up and down [1980] in it.

 Et YEHOVAH dit à la contrepartie: As-tu remarqué mon serviteur Job? Il n'y en a pas comme lui sur la terre, intègre, droit, craignant Dieu, et se détournant du mal.

 And the LORD [3068] said [0559] unto Satan, [7854] Hast thou considered [7760] [3820] my servant [5650] Job, [0347] that [there is] none like him in the earth, [0776] a perfect [8535] and an upright [3477] man, [0376] one that feareth [3373] God, [0430] and escheweth [5493] evil? [7451]

 Et la contrepartie répondit à YEHOVAH, et dit: Est-ce pour rien que Job craint Dieu?

 Then Satan [7854] answered [6030] the LORD, [3068] and said, [0559] Doth Job [0347] fear [3372] God [0430] for nought? [2600]

 N'as-tu pas fait comme une haie de tous côtés autour de lui, autour de sa maison, autour de tout ce qui lui appartient? Tu as béni l'œuvre de ses mains, et ses troupeaux se répandent sur la terre.

 Hast not thou made an hedge [7753] about him, [1157] and about [1157] his house, [1004] and about [1157] all [3605] that he hath [0834] on every side? [5439] thou hast blessed [1288] the work [4639] of his hands, [3027] and his substance [4735] is increased [6555] in the land. [0776]

 Mais étends ta main, touche à tout ce qui lui appartient; et tu verras s'il ne te renie pas en face!

 But [0199] put forth [7971] thine hand [3027] now, and touch [5060] all that he hath, and he will [3808] curse [1288] thee to thy face. [6440]

 Et YEHOVAH dit à la contrepartie: Voici, tout ce qui lui appartient est dans ta main; seulement ne porte pas la main sur lui. Et la contrepartie se retira de devant la face de YEHOVAH.

 And the LORD [3068] said [0559] unto Satan, [7854] Behold, all that he hath [is] in thy power; [3027] only upon himself put not forth [7971] thine hand. [3027] So Satan [7854] went forth [3318] from the presence [6440] of the LORD. [3068]

 Il arriva donc qu'un jour, comme ses fils et ses filles mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère aîné, un messager vint vers Job,

 And there was a day [3117] when his sons [1121] and his daughters [1323] [were] eating [0398] and drinking [8354] wine [3196] in their eldest [1060] brother's [0251] house: [1004]

 Et lui dit: Les bœufs labouraient, et les ânesses paissaient à côté d'eux;

 And there came [0935] a messenger [4397] unto Job, [0347] and said, [0559] The oxen [1241] were plowing, [2790] and the asses [0860] feeding [7462] beside them: [3027]

 Et ceux de Shéba se sont jetés dessus, et les ont pris, et ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée; et je me suis échappé, moi seul, pour te l'annoncer.

 And the Sabeans [7614] fell [5307] [upon them], and took them away; [3947] yea, they have slain [5221] the servants [5288] with the edge [6310] of the sword; [2719] and I only am escaped [4422] alone to tell [5046] thee.

 Cet homme parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre vint et dit: Le feu de Dieu est tombé du ciel, et il a brûlé les brebis et les serviteurs, et les a consumés; et je me suis échappé, moi seul, pour te l'annoncer.

 While he [was] yet speaking, [1696] there came [0935] also another, and said, [0559] The fire [0784] of God [0430] is fallen [5307] from heaven, [8064] and hath burned up [1197] the sheep, [6629] and the servants, [5288] and consumed [0398] them; and I only am escaped [4422] alone to tell [5046] thee.

 Cet homme parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre vint et dit: Des Caldéens ont fait trois bandes, et ont fondu sur les chameaux et les ont pris; et ils ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée; et je me suis échappé, moi seul, pour te l'annoncer.

 While he [was] yet speaking, [1696] there came [0935] also another, and said, [0559] The Chaldeans [3778] made out [7760] three [7969] bands, [7218] and fell [6584] upon the camels, [1581] and have carried them away, [3947] yea, and slain [5221] the servants [5288] with the edge [6310] of the sword; [2719] and I only am escaped [4422] alone to tell [5046] thee.

 Cet homme parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre vint et dit: Tes fils et tes filles mangeaient et buvaient du vin dans la maison de leur frère aîné;

 While he [was] yet speaking, [1696] there came [0935] also another, and said, [0559] Thy sons [1121] and thy daughters [1323] [were] eating [0398] and drinking [8354] wine [3196] in their eldest [1060] brother's [0251] house: [1004]

 Et voici, un grand vent est venu de l'autre côté du désert, et a donné contre les quatre coins de la maison, et elle est tombée sur les jeunes gens, et ils sont morts; et je me suis échappé, moi seul, pour te l'annoncer.

 And, behold, there came [0935] a great [1419] wind [7307] from [5676] the wilderness, [4057] and smote [5060] the four [0702] corners [6438] of the house, [1004] and it fell [5307] upon the young men, [5288] and they are dead; [4191] and I only am escaped [4422] alone to tell [5046] thee.

 Alors Job se leva, et il déchira son manteau, et il rasa sa tête; et il se jeta par terre, et il se prosterna,

 Then Job [0347] arose, [6965] and rent [7167] his mantle, [4598] and shaved [1494] his head, [7218] and fell down [5307] upon the ground, [0776] and worshipped, [7812]

 Et il dit: Nu je suis sorti du ventre de ma mère, et nu j'y retournerai; YEHOVAH a donné, YEHOVAH a ôté, que le nom de YEHOVAH soit béni!

 And said, [0559] Naked [6174] came I out [3318] of my mother's [0517] womb, [0990] and naked [6174] shall I return [7725] thither: the LORD [3068] gave, [5414] and the LORD [3068] hath taken away; [3947] blessed [1288] be the name [8034] of the LORD. [3068]

 En tout cela, Job ne pécha point, et n'attribua rien de mauvais à Dieu.

 In all this Job [0347] sinned [2398] not, nor charged [5414] God [0430] foolishly. [8604]

 Or, il arriva un jour que les fils de Dieu étant venus se présenter devant YEHOVAH dans leur culte solennel, la contrepartie se trouva aussi au milieu d'eux, pour se présenter devant YEHOVAH,

 Again there was a day [3117] when the sons [1121] of God [0430] came [0935] to present [3320] themselves before the LORD, [3068] and Satan [7854] came [0935] also among [8432] them to present [3320] himself before the LORD. [3068]

 Et YEHOVAH dit à la contrepartie: D'où viens-tu? Et la contrepartie répondit à YEHOVAH, et dit: De courir çà et là sur la terre et de m'y promener.

 And the LORD [3068] said [0559] unto Satan, [7854] From whence [0335] comest [0935] thou? And Satan [7854] answered [6030] the LORD, [3068] and said, [0559] From going to and fro [7751] in the earth, [0776] and from walking up and down [1980] in it.

 Et YEHOVAH dit à la contrepartie: As-tu remarqué mon serviteur Job? Il n'y en a pas comme lui sur la terre, intègre, droit, craignant Dieu, et se détournant du mal. Il tient encore ferme dans son intégrité, et tu m'as excité à le ruiner sans motif.

 And the LORD [3068] said [0559] unto Satan, [7854] Hast thou considered [7760] [3820] my servant [5650] Job, [0347] that [there is] none like him in the earth, [0776] a perfect [8535] and an upright [3477] man, [0376] one that feareth [3373] God, [0430] and escheweth [5493] evil? [7451] and still he holdeth [2388] fast his integrity, [8538] although thou movedst [5496] me against him, to destroy [1104] him without cause. [2600]

 Et la contrepartie répondit à YEHOVAH et dit: Peau pour peau! Tout ce que l'homme possède, il le donne pour sa vie.

 And Satan [7854] answered [6030] the LORD, [3068] and said, [0559] Skin [5785] for skin, [5785] yea, all that a man [0376] hath will he give [5414] for his life. [5315]

 Mais étends ta main, et touche à ses os et à sa chair; et tu verras s'il ne te renie pas en face!

 But [0199] put forth [7971] thine hand [3027] now, and touch [5060] his bone [6106] and his flesh, [1320] and he will curse [1288] thee to thy face. [6440]

 Et YEHOVAH dit à la contrepartie: Voici, il est en ta main; seulement respecte sa vie.

 And the LORD [3068] said [0559] unto Satan, [7854] Behold, he [is] in thine hand; [3027] but save [8104] his life. [5315]

 Et la contrepartie se retira de devant la face de YEHOVAH; et Dieu affligea Job d'un ulcère malin, depuis la plante des pieds jusqu'au sommet de la tête.

 So went Satan [7854] forth [3318] from the presence [6440] of the LORD, [3068] and smote [5221] Job [0347] with sore [7451] boils [7822] from the sole [3709] of his foot [7272] unto his crown. [6936]

 Et Job prit un tesson pour se gratter, et il était assis dans la cendre.

 And he took [3947] him a potsherd [2789] to scrape [1623] himself withal; and he sat down [3427] among [8432] the ashes. [0665]

 Et sa femme lui dit: Tu tiens ferme encore dans ton intégrité! Renie Dieu, et meurs!

 Then said [0559] his wife [0802] unto him, Dost thou still retain [2388] thine integrity? [8538] curse [1288] God, [0430] and die. [4191]

 Et il lui dit: Tu parles comme une femme insensée! Nous recevons le bien de la part de Dieu, et nous ne recevrions pas le mal! En tout cela, Job ne pécha point par ses lèvres.

 But he said [0559] unto her, Thou speakest [1696] as one [0259] of the foolish women [5036] speaketh. [1696] What? [1571] shall we receive [6901] good [2896] at the hand of God, [0430] and shall we not receive [6901] evil? [7451] In all this did not Job [0347] sin [2398] with his lips. [8193]

 Et trois amis de Job, Éliphaz, de Théman, Bildad, de Shuach, Tsophar, de Naama, ayant appris tous les maux qui lui étaient arrivés, partirent chacun de leur pays, et convinrent ensemble d'un jour pour venir lui faire leurs condoléances et le consoler.

 Now when Job's [0347] three [7969] friends [7453] heard [8085] of all this evil [7451] that was come [0935] upon him, they came [0935] every one [0376] from his own place; [4725] Eliphaz [0464] the Temanite, [8489] and Bildad [1085] the Shuhite, [7747] and Zophar [6691] the Naamathite: [5284] for they had made an appointment [3259] together [3162] to come [0935] to mourn [5110] with him and to comfort [5162] him.

 Et, ayant de loin levé les yeux, ils ne le reconnurent pas; alors ils élevèrent la voix et ils pleurèrent; et ils déchirèrent leur manteau, et ils jetèrent de la poussière vers le ciel, au-dessus de leur tête.

 And when they lifted up [5375] their eyes [5869] afar off, [7350] and knew [5234] him not, they lifted up [5375] their voice, [6963] and wept; [1058] and they rent [7167] every one [0376] his mantle, [4598] and sprinkled [2236] dust [6083] upon their heads [7218] toward heaven. [8064]

 Puis ils restèrent assis à terre avec lui, sept jours et sept nuits, et aucun d'eux ne lui dit une parole, car ils voyaient que sa douleur était fort grande.

 So they sat down [3427] with him upon the ground [0776] seven [7651] days [3117] and seven [7651] nights, [3915] and none spake [1696] a word [1697] unto him: for they saw [7200] that [his] grief [3511] was very [3966] great. [1431]

 Après cela, Job ouvrit la bouche et maudit le jour de sa naissance.

 After [0310] this opened [6605] Job [0347] his mouth, [6310] and cursed [7043] his day. [3117]

 Et, prenant la parole, Job dit:

 And Job [0347] spake, [6030] and said, [0559]

 Périsse le jour où je suis né, et la nuit qui a dit: Un homme est conçu!

 Let the day [3117] perish [0006] wherein I was born, [3205] and the night [3915] [in which] it was said, [0559] There is a man [1397] child conceived. [2029]

 Que ce jour soit ténèbres, que Dieu ne s'en enquière pas d'en haut, qu'aucune lumière ne brille sur lui!

 Let that day [3117] be darkness; [2822] let not God [0433] regard [1875] it from above, [4605] neither let the light [5105] shine [3313] upon it.

 Que les ténèbres et l'ombre de la mort le reprennent, qu'une sombre nuée demeure sur lui, qu'une éclipse le remplisse d'horreur!

 Let darkness [2822] and the shadow of death [6757] stain [1350] it; let a cloud [6053] dwell [7931] upon it; let the blackness [3650] of the day [3117] terrify [1204] it.

 Que l'obscurité s'empare de cette nuit, qu'elle ne se réjouisse pas au milieu des jours de l'année, qu'elle n'entre pas dans le compte des mois!

 As [for] that night, [3915] let darkness [0652] seize [3947] upon it; let it not be joined [2302] unto the days [3117] of the year, [8141] let it not come [0935] into the number [4557] of the months. [3391]

 Voici, que cette nuit soit stérile, et qu'aucun cri de joie n'y survienne!

 Lo, let that night [3915] be solitary, [1565] let no joyful voice [7445] come [0935] therein.

 Qu'ils la maudissent ceux qui maudissent les jours, ceux qui sont habiles à faire lever leur deuil!

 Let them curse [5344] it that curse [0779] the day, [3117] who are ready [6264] to raise up [5782] their mourning. [3882]

 Que les étoiles de son crépuscule soient obscurcies, qu'elle attende la lumière et qu'il n'y en ait point, et qu'elle ne voie pas les paupières de l'aurore!

 Let the stars [3556] of the twilight [5399] thereof be dark; [2821] let it look [6960] for light, [0216] but [have] none; neither let it see [7200] the dawning [6079] of the day: [7837]

 Parce qu'elle n'a pas fermé le sein qui me porta, et n'a point caché la douleur à mes yeux!

 Because it shut [5462] not up the doors [1817] of my [mother's] womb, [0990] nor hid [5641] sorrow [5999] from mine eyes. [5869]

 Que ne suis-je mort dès le sein de ma mère? Au sortir de ses flancs, que n'ai-je expiré?

 Why died [4191] I not from the womb? [7358] [why] did I [not] give up the ghost [1478] when I came out [3318] of the belly? [0990]

 Pourquoi des genoux se sont-ils présentés à moi, et pourquoi des mamelles pour être sucées?

 Why did the knees [1290] prevent [6923] me? or why the breasts [7699] that I should suck? [3243]

 Car, maintenant, je serais couché et tranquille, je dormirais, je serais en repos,

 For now should I have lain still [7901] and been quiet, [8252] I should have slept: [3462] then had I been at rest, [5117]

 Avec les rois et les arbitres de la terre, qui se bâtissent des mausolées,

 With kings [4428] and counsellors [3289] of the earth, [0776] which built [1129] desolate places [2723] for themselves;

 Avec les princes qui ont de l'or, qui remplissent d'argent leurs maisons.

 Or with princes [8269] that had gold, [2091] who filled [4390] their houses [1004] with silver: [3701]

 Ou bien, comme l'avorton caché, je n'existerais pas; comme les petits enfants qui n'ont pas vu la lumière.

 Or as an hidden [2934] untimely birth [5309] I had not been; as infants [5768] [which] never saw [7200] light. [0216]

 Là, les méchants ne tourmentent plus personne, et là se reposent les hommes qui ont perdu leur force;

 There the wicked [7563] cease [2308] [from] troubling; [7267] and there the weary [3019] [3581] be at rest. [5117]

 Avec eux, les captifs sont tranquilles: ils n'entendent plus la voix de l'exacteur.

 [There] the prisoners [0615] rest [7599] together; [3162] they hear [8085] not the voice [6963] of the oppressor. [5065]

 Là, le petit et le grand sont ensemble, et l'esclave est délivré de son maître.

 The small [6996] and great [1419] are there; and the servant [5650] [is] free [2670] from his master. [0113]

 Pourquoi donne-t-on la lumière au malheureux, et la vie à ceux dont l'âme est pleine d'amertume?

 Wherefore is light [0216] given [5414] to him that is in misery, [6001] and life [2416] unto the bitter [4751] [in] soul; [5315]

 Qui attendent la mort, et elle ne vient point, qui la recherchent plus qu'un trésor,

 Which long [2442] for death, [4194] but it [cometh] not; and dig [2658] for it more than for hid treasures; [4301]

 Qui seraient contents jusqu'à l'allégresse et ravis de joie, s'ils trouvaient le tombeau?

 Which rejoice [8056] exceedingly, [1524] [and] are glad, [7797] when they can find [4672] the grave? [6913]

 À l'homme qui ne connaît pas sa voie et que Dieu cerne de tous côtés?

 [Why is light given] to a man [1397] whose way [1870] is hid, [5641] and whom God [0433] hath hedged in? [5526]

 Car je soupire au lieu de manger, et mes cris se répandent comme l'eau.

 For my sighing [0585] cometh [0935] before [6440] I eat, [3899] and my roarings [7581] are poured out [5413] like the waters. [4325]

 Ce que je crains m'arrive, et ce que j'appréhende vient sur moi.

 For the thing which I greatly [6343] feared [6342] is come [0857] upon me, and that which I was afraid [3025] of is come [0935] unto me.

 Je n'ai ni paix, ni tranquillité, ni repos! Le tourment est venu!

 I was not in safety, [7951] neither had I rest, [8252] neither was I quiet; [5117] yet trouble [7267] came. [0935]

 Alors Éliphaz, de Théman, prit la parole, et dit:

 Then Eliphaz [0464] the Temanite [8489] answered [6030] and said, [0559]

 Si l'on tente de te parler, te fâcheras-tu? Mais qui pourrait retenir ses paroles?

 [If] we assay [5254] to commune [1697] with thee, wilt thou be grieved? [3811] but who can [3201] withhold [6113] himself from speaking? [4405]

 Voici, tu as souvent instruit les autres, et tu as fortifié les mains affaiblies;

 Behold, thou hast instructed [3256] many, [7227] and thou hast strengthened [2388] the weak [7504] hands. [3027]

 Tes paroles ont relevé ceux qui chancelaient, et tu as raffermi les genoux qui pliaient.

 Thy words [4405] have upholden [6965] him that was falling, [3782] and thou hast strengthened [0553] the feeble [3766] knees. [1290]

 Et maintenant que le malheur t'arrive, tu te fâches; et parce qu'il t'a atteint, tu es tout éperdu!

 But now it is come [0935] upon thee, and thou faintest; [3811] it toucheth [5060] thee, and thou art troubled. [0926]

 Ta piété ne fait-elle pas ta confiance? Ton espérance, n'est-ce pas l'intégrité de tes voies?

 [Is] not [this] thy fear, [3374] thy confidence, [3690] thy hope, [8615] and the uprightness [8537] of thy ways? [1870]

 Cherche dans ta mémoire; quel est l'innocent qui a péri, et où des justes ont-ils été exterminés?

 Remember, [2142] I pray thee, who [ever] perished, [0006] being innocent? [5355] or where [0375] were the righteous [3477] cut off? [3582]

 Pour moi, j'ai vu que ceux qui labourent l'iniquité et qui sèment la peine, la moissonnent.

 Even as I have seen, [7200] they that plow [2790] iniquity, [0205] and sow [2232] wickedness, [5999] reap [7114] the same.

 Ils périssent par le souffle de Dieu, et ils sont consumés par le vent de sa colère.

 By the blast [5397] of God [0433] they perish, [0006] and by the breath [7307] of his nostrils [0639] are they consumed. [3615]

 Le rugissement du lion, le cri du grand lion cesse, et les dents du lionceau sont anéanties;

 The roaring [7581] of the lion, [0738] and the voice [6963] of the fierce lion, [7826] and the teeth [8127] of the young lions, [3715] are broken. [5421]

 Le lion périt faute de proie, et les petits de la lionne sont dispersés.

 The old lion [3918] perisheth [0006] for lack [1097] of prey, [2964] and the stout lion's [3833] whelps [1121] are scattered abroad. [6504]

 Une parole m'est furtivement arrivée, et mon oreille en a saisi le murmure.

 Now a thing [1697] was secretly brought [1589] to me, and mine ear [0241] received [3947] a little [8102] thereof.

 Au milieu de mes pensées, pendant les visions de la nuit, quand un profond sommeil tombe sur les humains,

 In thoughts [5587] from the visions [2384] of the night, [3915] when deep sleep [8639] falleth [5307] on men, [0582]

 Une frayeur et un tremblement me saisirent, et effrayèrent tous mes os.

 Fear [6343] came [7122] upon me, and trembling, [7461] which made all [7230] my bones [6106] to shake. [6342]

 Un esprit passa devant moi, et fit hérisser le poil de ma chair.

 Then a spirit [7307] passed [2498] before my face; [6440] the hair [8185] of my flesh [1320] stood up: [5568]

 Il se tint là et je ne reconnus pas son visage; une figure était devant mes yeux. Il y eut un silence; et j'entendis une voix:

 It stood still, [5975] but I could not discern [5234] the form [4758] thereof: an image [8544] [was] before mine eyes, [5869] [there was] silence, [1827] and I heard [8085] a voice, [6963] [saying],

 "L'homme sera-t-il juste devant Dieu? L'homme sera-t-il pur devant celui qui l'a fait?

 Shall mortal man [0582] be more just [6663] than God? [0433] shall a man [1397] be more pure [2891] than his maker? [6213]

 Voici, il ne se fie pas à ses serviteurs, ni en ses messagers en lesquels il met sa lumière.

 Behold, he put no trust [0539] in his servants; [5650] and his angels [4397] he charged [7760] with folly: [8417]

 Combien plus chez ceux qui habitent des maisons d'argile, qui ont leurs fondements dans la poussière, qui sont consumés a la rencontre d'un vermisseaux!

 La colère tue l'insensé, et le dépit fait mourir celui qui est destitué de sens;

 Car la souffrance ne sort pas de la poussière, et la peine ne germe pas du sol,

 Dans six détresses, il te délivrera; et dans sept, le mal ne te touchera point.

 En temps de famine, il te garantira de la mort, et en temps de guerre, du tranchant de l'épée.

 Tu seras à couvert du fléau de la langue, et tu n'auras point peur de la désolation, quand elle arrivera.

 Tu riras de la dévastation et de la famine, et tu n'auras pas peur des bêtes de la terre;

 Car tu auras un pacte avec les pierres des champs, et les bêtes des champs seront en paix avec toi.

 Mes amis m'ont trompé comme un torrent, comme le lit des torrents qui passent;

 Ils sont troublés par les glaçons, la neige s'y engloutit;

 Il ne reviendra plus dans sa maison, et son lieu ne le reconnaîtra plus.

 Dieu ferait-il fléchir le droit, le Tout-Puissant ferait-il fléchir la justice?

 Si tes fils ont péché contre lui, il les a livrés à leur crime.

 If thy children [1121] have sinned [2398] against him, and he have cast them away [7971] for [3027] their transgression; [6588]

 Mais toi, si tu cherches Dieu, et si tu demandes grâce au Tout-Puissant,

 Si tu es pur et droit, il veillera certainement sur toi; il restaurera la demeure de ta justice;

 Tes commencements auront été peu de chose, et ta fin sera très grande.

 Il est encore en sa verdure, on ne le coupe pas, et avant toutes les herbes, il est desséché.

 Telle est la destinée de tous ceux qui oublient Dieu: l'espérance de l'impie périra.

 Mais ses racines s'entrelacent sur des monceaux de pierres, il rencontre un sol de rochers,

 Et si on l'enlève de sa place, celle-ci le renie et lui dit: Je ne t'ai point connu!

 Telle est la joie qu'il a de sa conduite, et d'autres après lui s'élèveront de la poussière.

 C'est ainsi que Dieu ne rejette pas l'homme intègre, mais il ne donne pas la main aux méchants.

 Il remplira encore ta bouche de joie, et tes lèvres de chants d'allégresse.

 Il a créé la grande Ourse, l'Orion, et la Pléiade, et les régions cachées du midi.

 Il fait de grandes choses qu'on ne peut sonder, de merveilleuses choses qu'on ne peut compter.

 S'il ravit, qui le lui fera rendre? Qui lui dira: Que fais-tu?

 Dieu ne revient pas sur sa colère; sous lui sont abattus les plus puissants rebelles.

 Combien moins lui pourrais-je répondre, moi, et choisir mes paroles pour lui parler!

 How much less shall I answer [6030] him, [and] choose [0977] out my words [1697] [to reason] with him?

 Quand j'aurais raison, je ne lui répondrais pas; je demanderais grâce à mon juge!

 Whom, though I were righteous, [6663] [yet] would I not answer, [6030] [but] I would make supplication [2603] to my judge. [8199]

 Si je le citais, et qu'il me répondît, je ne croirais pas qu'il voulût écouter ma voix,

 Il ne me permet point de reprendre haleine; il me rassasie d'amertume.

 S'il est question de force, il dit: "Me voilà!" S'il est question de droit: "Qui m'assigne?"

 If [I speak] of strength, [3581] lo, [he is] strong: [0533] and if of judgment, [4941] who shall set me a time [3259] [to plead]?

 Quand même je serais juste, ma bouche me condamnerait; je serais innocent, qu'elle me déclarerait coupable.

 Peux-tu te plaire à accabler, à repousser l'œuvre de tes mains, et à éclairer les desseins des méchants?

 [Is it] good [2895] unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, [6231] that thou shouldest despise [3988] the work [3018] of thine hands, [3709] and shine [3313] upon the counsel [6098] of the wicked? [7563]

 As-tu des yeux de chair? Vois-tu comme voient les mortels?

 Hast thou eyes [5869] of flesh? [1320] or seest [7200] thou as man [0582] seeth? [7200]

 Tes jours sont-ils comme les jours des mortels? Tes années sont-elles comme les jours des humains?

 Pour que tu fasses la recherche de mon iniquité et l'enquête de mon péché,

 That thou enquirest [1245] after mine iniquity, [5771] and searchest [1875] after my sin? [2403]

 Quoique tu saches que je ne suis pas coupable, et que nul ne peut me délivrer de ta main.

 Thou knowest [1847] that I am not wicked; [7561] and [there is] none that can deliver [5337] out of thine hand. [3027]

 Tes mains m'ont formé et m'ont fait tout entier. Et tu me détruirais!

 Thine hands [3027] have made [6087] me and fashioned [6213] me together [3162] round about; [5439] yet thou dost destroy [1104] me.

 Souviens-toi donc que tu m'as formé comme de l'argile, et tu me ferais rentrer dans la poussière!

 Ne m'as-tu pas coulé comme du lait, et caillé comme un fromage?

 Tu m'as revêtu de peau et de chair, et tu m'as composé d'os et de nerfs.

 Tu m'as comblé de vie et de grâces, et ta providence a gardé mon souffle.

 Et voici ce que tu me réservais en ton cœur! Et voici, je le vois, ce qui était dans ta pensée:

 And these [things] hast thou hid [6845] in thine heart: [3824] I know [3045] that this [is] with thee.

 Si je péchais, tu le remarquerais, et tu ne m'absoudrais pas de ma faute;

 Si j'étais méchant, malheur à moi! Si j'étais juste, je n'en lèverais pas la tête plus haut, je serais rassasié d'ignominie et spectateur de ma propre misère.

 If I be wicked, [7561] woe [0480] unto me; and [if] I be righteous, [6663] [yet] will I not lift up [5375] my head. [7218] [I am] full [7649] of confusion; [7036] therefore see [7202] thou mine affliction; [6040]

 Si je redressais la tête, tu me donnerais la chasse comme à un lion, et tu multiplierais tes exploits contre moi;

 Tu produirais de nouveaux témoins contre moi, tu redoublerais de colère à mon égard, tes bataillons se renouvelleraient contre moi.

 Thou renewest [2318] thy witnesses [5707] against me, and increasest [7235] thine indignation [3708] upon me; [5978] changes [2487] and war [6635] [are] against me.

 Mais pourquoi m'as-tu fait sortir du sein de ma mère? J'eusse expiré, et aucun œil ne m'aurait vu!

 Wherefore then hast thou brought me forth [3318] out of the womb? [7358] Oh that I had given up the ghost, [1478] and no eye [5869] had seen [7200] me!

 Je serais comme n'ayant pas été; j'aurais été porté du sein maternel au tombeau!

 I should have been as though I had not been; I should have been carried [2986] from the womb [0990] to the grave. [6913]

 Mes jours ne sont-ils pas en petit nombre? Qu'il me laisse! Qu'il éloigne sa main de moi, et que je respire un peu!

 Avant que j'aille, pour n'en plus revenir, dans la terre des ténèbres et de l'ombre de la mort;

 Terre obscure comme la nuit, où règnent l'ombre de la mort et le chaos, où la lumière est comme la nuit!

 Alors Tsophar, de Naama, prit la parole, et dit:

 Ne répondra-t-on point à tant de discours, et suffira-t-il d'être un grand parleur pour être justifié?

 Tes vains propos feront-ils taire les gens? Te moqueras-tu, sans que personne te confonde?

 Tu as dit: Ma doctrine est pure, je suis sans tache devant tes yeux.

 For thou hast said, [0559] My doctrine [3948] [is] pure, [2134] and I am clean [1249] in thine eyes. [5869]

 Mais je voudrais que Dieu parlât, et qu'il ouvrît sa bouche pour te répondre;

 But [0199] oh that [5414] God [0433] would speak, [1696] and open [6605] his lips [8193] against thee;

 Qu'il te montrât les secrets de sa sagesse, de son immense sagesse; et tu reconnaîtrais que Dieu oublie une partie de ton iniquité.

 And that he would shew [5046] thee the secrets [8587] of wisdom, [2451] that [they are] double [3718] to that which is! [8454] Know [3045] therefore that God [0433] exacteth [5382] of thee [less] than thine iniquity [5771] [deserveth].

 Trouveras-tu le fond de Dieu? Trouveras-tu la limite du Tout-Puissant?

 Canst thou by searching [2714] find out [4672] God? [0433] canst thou find out [4672] the Almighty [7706] unto perfection? [8503]

 Ce sont les hauteurs des cieux: qu'y feras-tu? C'est plus profond que les enfers: qu'y connaîtras-tu?

 Son étendue est plus longue que la terre, et plus large que la mer.

 S'il saisit, s'il emprisonne, s'il assemble le tribunal, qui l'en empêchera?

 Car il connaît, lui, les hommes de rien; il voit l'iniquité, sans qu'elle s'en doute;

 Mais l'homme vide de sens deviendra intelligent, quand l'ânon sauvage naîtra comme un homme!

 Si tu disposes bien ton cœur, et si tu étends tes mains vers Dieu,

 (Si l'iniquité est en tes mains, éloigne-la, et que le crime n'habite point dans tes tentes!)

 Alors certainement tu lèveras ton front sans tache; tu seras raffermi et tu ne craindras rien;

 Tu oublieras tes peines, tu t'en souviendras comme des eaux écoulées.

 Tu t'étendras à ton aise, et nul ne t'effrayera; et bien des gens te feront la cour.

 Mais les yeux des méchants seront consumés; tout refuge leur sera ôté, et toute leur espérance sera de rendre l'âme.

 Et Job prit la parole, et dit:

 Vraiment, vous êtes tout un peuple, et avec vous mourra la sagesse!

 J'ai pourtant du sens aussi bien que vous, je ne vous suis point inférieur; et qui ne sait de telles choses?

 Je suis un homme qui est en risée à son ami; un homme qui invoquait Dieu, et Dieu lui répondait! En risée! un homme juste, intègre!

 Mépris au malheur! telle est la pensée des heureux; le mépris est réservé à ceux dont le pied chancelle!

 He that is ready [3559] to slip [4571] with [his] feet [7272] [is as] a lamp [3940] despised [0937] in the thought [6248] of him that is at ease. [7600]

 Elles sont en paix, les tentes des pillards, et toutes les sécurités sont pour ceux qui irritent Dieu, qui se font un dieu de leur bras.

 Qu'il tient en sa main l'âme de tous les vivants, l'esprit de toute chair d'homme?

 L'oreille ne juge-t-elle pas des discours, comme le palais goûte les aliments?

 Doth not the ear [0241] try [0974] words? [4405] and the mouth [2441] taste [2938] his meat? [0400]

 La sagesse est dans les vieillards, et le discernement est le fruit des longs jours!

 With the ancient [3453] [is] wisdom; [2451] and in length [0753] of days [3117] understanding. [8394]

 Non, c'est en Dieu que se trouvent la sagesse et la force; c'est à lui qu'appartiennent le conseil et l'intelligence.

 Voici, il démolit, et on ne rebâtit point; il enferme quelqu'un, et on ne lui ouvre pas.

 Voici, il retient les eaux, et elles tarissent; il les lâche, et elles bouleversent la terre.

 En lui résident la puissance et la sagesse; de lui dépendent celui qui s'égare et celui qui égare.

 Il fait marcher pieds nus les conseillers; il frappe de folie les juges.

 He leadeth [3212] counsellors [3289] away spoiled, [7758] and maketh the judges [8199] fools. [1984]

 Il relâche l'autorité des rois, et il serre la corde sur leurs reins.

 Il fait marcher pieds nus les prêtres, et il renverse les puissants.

 Il ôte la parole aux plus assurés, et il prive de sens les vieillards.

 Il verse le mépris sur les nobles, et il délie la ceinture des forts.

 Il met en évidence les profondeurs cachées dans les ténèbres, et il amène à la lumière l'ombre de la mort.

 Il agrandit les nations, et il les perd; il étend les nations, et il les conduit en captivité.

 Il ôte le sens aux chefs des peuples de la terre, et il les fait errer dans un désert sans chemin.

 Ils tâtonnent dans les ténèbres, sans aucune clarté, et il les fait chanceler comme un homme ivre.

 Voici, mon œil a vu tout cela; mon oreille l'a entendu et compris;

 Ce que vous savez, je le sais aussi; je ne vous suis pas inférieur.

 What ye know, [1847] [the same] do I know [3045] also: I [am] not inferior [5307] unto you.

 Mais je veux parler au Tout-Puissant, je veux plaider auprès de Dieu.

 Surely [0199] I would speak [1696] to the Almighty, [7706] and I desire [2654] to reason [3198] with God. [0410]

 Mais vous, vous êtes des inventeurs de mensonges. Vous êtes tous des médecins de néant.

 But [0199] ye [are] forgers [2950] of lies, [8267] ye [are] all physicians [7495] of no value. [0457]

 Puissiez-vous demeurer dans le silence, et que ce soit là votre sagesse!

 O that [5414] ye would altogether [2790] hold your peace! [2790] and it should be your wisdom. [2451]

 Écoutez donc ma réprimande, et soyez attentifs à la réplique de mes lèvres.

 Hear [8085] now my reasoning, [8433] and hearken [7181] to the pleadings [7379] of my lips. [8193]

 Tiendrez-vous des discours injustes en faveur de Dieu? Et, pour le défendre, direz-vous des mensonges?

 Will ye speak [1696] wickedly [5766] for God? [0410] and talk [1696] deceitfully [7423] for him?

 Ferez-vous acception de personnes en sa faveur? Prétendrez-vous plaider pour Dieu?

 Will ye accept [5375] his person? [6440] will ye contend [7378] for God? [0410]

 Vous en prendra-t-il bien, s'il vous sonde? Comme on trompe un homme, le tromperez-vous?

 Is it good [2895] that he should search [2713] you out? or as one man mocketh [2048] another, [0582] do ye [so] mock [2048] him?

 Certainement, il vous reprendra, si secrètement vous faites acception de personnes.

 He will surely [3198] reprove [3198] you, if ye do secretly [5643] accept [5375] persons. [6440]

 Sa majesté ne vous épouvantera-t-elle point, et sa frayeur ne tombera-t-elle pas sur vous?

 Quand même il me tuerait, je ne cesserai d'espérer en Lui. Du moins, je maintiendrai ma conduite devant lui.

 Though [2005] he slay [6991] me, yet will I trust [3176] in him: but I will maintain [3198] mine own ways [1870] before [6440] him.

 Et cela me tournera à salut; car un hypocrite ne peut se tenir devant lui.

 He also [shall be] my salvation: [3444] for an hypocrite [2611] shall not come [0935] before [6440] him.

 Écoutez, écoutez mes paroles, prêtez l'oreille à mes déclarations.

 Hear [8085] diligently [8085] my speech, [4405] and my declaration [0262] with your ears. [0241]

 Voici, j'ai préparé ma cause. Je sais que je serai justifié.

 Behold now, I have ordered [6186] [my] cause; [4941] I know [3045] that I shall be justified. [6663]

 Quelqu'un plaidera-t-il contre moi? Alors je me tais, et je meurs.

 Who [is] he [that] will plead [7378] with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, [2790] I shall give up the ghost. [1478]

 Seulement, ne me fais point deux choses, et alors je ne me cacherai pas loin de ta face:

 Only do [6213] not two [8147] [things] unto me: then will I not hide [5641] myself from thee. [6440]

 Éloigne ta main de moi, et que ta terreur ne me trouble point.

 Withdraw thine hand [3709] far [7368] from me: and let not thy dread [0367] make me afraid. [1204]

 Puis, appelle-moi et je répondrai. Ou bien, que je parle, et tu me répliqueras.

 Combien ai-je commis d'iniquités et de péchés? Fais-moi connaître ma transgression et mon péché.

 How many [are] mine iniquities [5771] and sins? [2403] make me to know [3045] my transgression [6588] and my sin. [2403]

 Pourquoi caches-tu ta face, et me tiens-tu pour ton ennemi?

 Wherefore hidest [5641] thou thy face, [6440] and holdest [2803] me for thine enemy? [0341]

 Veux-tu effrayer une feuille que le vent emporte, et poursuivre une paille desséchée?

 Wilt thou break [6206] a leaf [5929] driven to and fro? [5086] and wilt thou pursue [7291] the dry [3002] stubble? [7179]

 Pour que tu écrives contre moi d'amers arrêts, et que tu me fasses recevoir la peine des péchés de ma jeunesse;

 For thou writest [3789] bitter things [4846] against me, and makest me to possess [3423] the iniquities [5771] of my youth. [5271]

 Pour que tu mettes mes pieds dans des ceps, que tu épies tous mes chemins, et que tu traces une limite autour de la plante de mes pieds;

 Thou puttest [7760] my feet [7272] also in the stocks, [5465] and lookest narrowly [8104] unto all my paths; [0734] thou settest a print [2707] upon the heels [8328] of my feet. [7272]

 Et ce corps se détruit comme du bois vermoulu, comme un vêtement que la teigne a rongé.

 And he, as a rotten thing, [7538] consumeth, [1086] as a garment [0899] that is moth [6211] eaten. [0398]

 L'homme né de femme a la vie courte, et est rassasié de trouble.

 Man [0120] [that is] born [3205] of a woman [0802] [is] of few [7116] days, [3117] and full [7649] of trouble. [7267]

 Comme une fleur, il éclot, et on le coupe; il fuit comme une ombre, et ne subsiste point.

 He cometh forth [3318] like a flower, [6731] and is cut down: [5243] he fleeth [1272] also as a shadow, [6738] and continueth [5975] not.

 Et c'est sur cet être que tu ouvres les yeux, et c'est moi que tu conduis en justice avec toi!

 And dost thou open [6491] thine eyes [5869] upon such an one, [2088] and bringest [0935] me into judgment [4941] with thee?

 Qui peut tirer la pureté de la souillure? Personne.

 Who can bring [5414] a clean [2889] [thing] out of an unclean? [2931] not one. [0259]

 Si ses jours sont déterminés, si le nombre de ses mois est fixé par-devers toi, si tu lui as prescrit des limites qu'il ne passera pas,

 Seeing [0518] his days [3117] [are] determined, [2782] the number [4557] of his months [2320] [are] with thee, thou hast appointed [6213] his bounds [2706] that he cannot pass; [5674]

 Détourne tes regards de lui, et qu'il ait quelque repos, jusqu'à ce qu'il goûte, comme un mercenaire, la fin de sa journée.

 Turn [8159] from him, that he may rest, [2308] till he shall accomplish, [7521] as an hireling, [7916] his day. [3117]

 Car il y a de l'espérance pour l'arbre, si on l'a coupé; il reverdit encore, et il ne cesse pas d'avoir des rejetons;

 For there is [3426] hope [8615] of a tree, [6086] if it be cut down, [3772] that it will sprout [2498] again, and that the tender branch [3127] thereof will not cease. [2308]

 Si sa racine vieillit dans la terre, et si dans la poussière son tronc est mort,

 Though the root [8328] thereof wax old [2204] in the earth, [0776] and the stock [1503] thereof die [4191] in the ground; [6083]

 Dès qu'il sent l'eau, il pousse de nouveau, et il produit des branches comme un jeune plant.

 [Yet] through the scent [7381] of water [4325] it will bud, [6524] and bring forth [6213] boughs [7105] like a plant. [5194]

 Mais quand l'homme meurt, il reste gisant; quand l'homme a expiré, où est-il?

 But man [1397] dieth, [4191] and wasteth away: [2522] yea, man [0120] giveth up the ghost, [1478] and where [is] he?

 Les eaux de la mer s'écoulent, le fleuve tarit et se dessèche,

 [As] the waters [4325] fail [0235] from the sea, [3220] and the flood [5104] decayeth [2717] and drieth up: [3001]

 Ainsi l'homme se couche, et il ne se relève point. Tant qu'il y aura des cieux, ils ne se réveilleront point, et on ne les fera pas sortir de leur sommeil.

 So man [0376] lieth down, [7901] and riseth [6965] not: till the heavens [8064] [be] no more, [1115] they shall not awake, [6974] nor be raised [5782] out of their sleep. [8142]

 Oh! si tu me cachais dans le Sépulcre, si tu me mettais à couvert, jusqu'à ce que ta colère fût passée! Si tu me donnais un terme, après lequel tu te souviendrais de moi

 O that [5414] thou wouldest hide [6845] me in the grave, [7585] that thou wouldest keep me secret, [5641] until thy wrath [0639] be past, [7725] that thou wouldest appoint [7896] me a set time, [2706] and remember [2142] me!

 (Si l'homme meurt, revivra-t-il?), tout le temps de ma consigne, j'attendrais, jusqu'à ce que vînt mon remplacement!

 If a man [1397] die, [4191] shall he live [2421] [again]? all the days [3117] of my appointed time [6635] will I wait, [3176] till my change [2487] come. [0935]

 Tu appellerais, et je répondrais; tu désirerais de revoir l'ouvrage de tes mains.

 Thou shalt call, [7121] and I will answer [6030] thee: thou wilt have a desire [3700] to the work [4639] of thine hands. [3027]

 Mais, maintenant, tu comptes mes pas, et tu observes tous mes péchés.

 For now thou numberest [5608] my steps: [6806] dost thou not watch [8104] over my sin? [2403]

 Ma transgression est scellée dans le sac, et tu as ajouté à mon iniquité.

 My transgression [6588] [is] sealed up [2856] in a bag, [6872] and thou sewest up [2950] mine iniquity. [5771]

 Mais la montagne s'éboule; le rocher est transporté hors de sa place;

 And surely [0199] the mountain [2022] falling [5307] cometh to nought, [5034] and the rock [6697] is removed [6275] out of his place. [4725]

 Les eaux minent les pierres; les inondations entraînent la poussière de la terre: ainsi fais-tu périr l'espérance du mortel.

 The waters [4325] wear [7833] the stones: [0068] thou washest away [7857] the things which grow [5599] [out] of the dust [6083] of the earth; [0776] and thou destroyest [0006] the hope [8615] of man. [0582]

 Tu ne cesses de l'assaillir, et il s'en va; tu changes son aspect, et tu le renvoies.

 Thou prevailest [8630] for ever [5331] against him, and he passeth: [1980] thou changest [8138] his countenance, [6440] and sendest him away. [7971]

 Que ses fils soient honorés, il n'en saura rien; qu'ils soient méprisés, il ne le verra pas.

 His sons [1121] come to honour, [3513] and he knoweth [3045] [it] not; and they are brought low, [6819] but he perceiveth [0995] [it] not of them.

 C'est sur lui seul que sa chair s'afflige, et sur lui que son âme gémit.

 But his flesh [1320] upon him shall have pain, [3510] and his soul [5315] within him shall mourn. [0056]

 Alors Éliphaz, de Théman, prit la parole, et dit:

 Le sage répond-il par une science vaine, et remplit-il de vent sa poitrine?

 Should a wise man [2450] utter [6030] vain [7307] knowledge, [1847] and fill [4390] his belly [0990] with the east wind? [6921]

 Discute-t-il avec des propos qui ne servent de rien, et avec des paroles sans profit?

 Should he reason [3198] with unprofitable [3808] [5532] talk? [1697] or with speeches [4405] wherewith he can do no good? [3276]

 Bien plus, tu abolis la piété, et tu détruis la prière qui s'adresse à Dieu.

 Yea, thou castest off [6565] fear, [3374] and restrainest [1639] prayer [7881] before [6440] God. [0410]

 Ton iniquité inspire ta bouche, et tu as choisi le langage des rusés.

 For thy mouth [6310] uttereth [0502] thine iniquity, [5771] and thou choosest [0977] the tongue [3956] of the crafty. [6175]

 Ta bouche te condamne, et non pas moi; et tes lèvres témoignent contre toi.

 Thine own mouth [6310] condemneth [7561] thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips [8193] testify [6030] against thee.

 Es-tu le premier-né des hommes, et as-tu été formé avant les montagnes?

 [Art] thou the first [7223] [7223] man [0120] [that] was born? [3205] or wast thou made [2342] before [6440] the hills? [1389]

 As-tu entendu ce qui s'est dit dans le conseil de Dieu, et as-tu pris pour toi la sagesse?

 Hast thou heard [8085] the secret [5475] of God? [0433] and dost thou restrain [1639] wisdom [2451] to thyself?

 Que sais-tu que nous ne sachions? Quelle connaissance as-tu que nous n'ayons aussi?

 What knowest [3045] thou, that we know [3045] not? [what] understandest [0995] thou, which [is] not in us?

 Il y a aussi parmi nous des cheveux blancs, des vieillards, plus riches de jours que ton père.

 With us [are] both the grayheaded [7867] and very aged [3453] men, much [3524] elder [3117] than thy father. [0001]

 Est-ce donc peu de chose pour toi que les consolations de Dieu et les paroles dites avec douceur?

 [Are] the consolations [8575] of God [0410] small [4592] with thee? is there any secret [0328] thing [1697] with thee?

 Pourquoi ton cœur s'emporte-t-il? Et pourquoi tes yeux regardent-ils de travers?

 Why doth thine heart [3820] carry thee away? [3947] and what do thy eyes [5869] wink at, [7335]

 C'est contre Dieu que tu tournes ta colère, et que tu fais sortir de ta bouche de tels discours!

 That thou turnest [7725] thy spirit [7307] against God, [0410] and lettest [such] words [4405] go out [3318] of thy mouth? [6310]

 Qu'est-ce qu'un mortel pour qu'il soit pur, et un fils de femme pour qu'il soit juste?

 What [is] man, [0582] that he should be clean? [2135] and [he which is] born [3205] of a woman, [0802] that he should be righteous? [6663]

 Voici, Dieu ne se fie pas à ses saints, et les cieux ne sont pas purs à ses yeux.

 Behold, he putteth no trust [0539] in his saints; [6918] yea, the heavens [8064] are not clean [2141] in his sight. [5869]

 Combien plus est abominable et corrompu, l'homme qui boit l'iniquité comme l'eau!

 How much more abominable [8581] and filthy [0444] [is] man, [0376] which drinketh [8354] iniquity [5766] like water? [4325]

 Je t'instruirai, écoute-moi. Je te raconterai ce que j'ai vu,

 I will shew [2331] thee, hear [8085] me; and that [which] I have seen [2372] I will declare; [5608]

 Ce que les sages ont proclamé, ce qu'ils n'ont point caché, l'ayant tenu de leurs pères.

 Which wise [2450] men have told [5046] from their fathers, [0001] and have not hid [3582] [it]:

 À eux seuls ce pays avait été donné, et l'étranger n'avait pas pénétré chez eux:

 Unto whom alone the earth [0776] was given, [5414] and no stranger [2114] passed [5674] among [8432] them.

 "Toute sa vie, le méchant est tourmenté, et un petit nombre d'années sont réservées au malfaiteur.

 The wicked [7563] man travaileth [2342] with pain all [his] days, [3117] and the number [4557] of years [8141] is hidden [6845] to the oppressor. [6184]

 Des bruits effrayants remplissent ses oreilles; en pleine paix, le destructeur vient sur lui.

 A dreadful [6343] sound [6963] [is] in his ears: [0241] in prosperity [7965] the destroyer [7703] shall come [0935] upon him.

 Il ne croit pas pouvoir sortir des ténèbres, et il se voit épié par l'épée;

 He believeth [0539] not that he shall return [7725] out of darkness, [2822] and he is waited [6822] for of the sword. [2719]

 Il court çà et là, cherchant son pain; il sait que le jour des ténèbres lui est préparé.

 He wandereth abroad [5074] for bread, [3899] [saying], Where [is it]? he knoweth [3045] that the day [3117] of darkness [2822] is ready [3559] at his hand. [3027]

 La détresse et l'angoisse l'épouvantent; elles l'assaillent comme un roi prêt au combat;

 Trouble [6862] and anguish [4691] shall make him afraid; [1204] they shall prevail [8630] against him, as a king [4428] ready [6264] to the battle. [3593]

 Parce qu'il a levé la main contre Dieu, et a bravé le Tout-Puissant:

 For he stretcheth out [5186] his hand [3027] against God, [0410] and strengtheneth [1396] himself against the Almighty. [7706]

 Il a couru vers lui, avec audace, sous le dos épais de ses boucliers.

 He runneth [7323] upon him, [even] on [his] neck, [6677] upon the thick [5672] bosses [1354] of his bucklers: [4043]

 L'embonpoint avait couvert son visage, et la graisse s'était accumulée sur ses flancs;

 Because he covereth [3680] his face [6440] with his fatness, [2459] and maketh [6213] collops of fat [6371] on [his] flanks. [3689]

 C'est pourquoi il habite des villes détruites, des maisons désertes, tout près de n'être plus que des monceaux de pierres.

 And he dwelleth [7931] in desolate [3582] cities, [5892] [and] in houses [1004] which no man inhabiteth, [3427] which are ready to become [6257] heaps. [1530]

 Il ne s'enrichira pas, et sa fortune ne subsistera pas, et ses propriétés ne s'étendront pas sur la terre.

 He shall not be rich, [6238] neither shall his substance [2428] continue, [6965] neither shall he prolong [5186] the perfection [4512] thereof upon the earth. [0776]

 Il ne pourra pas sortir des ténèbres; la flamme desséchera ses rejetons, et il s'en ira par le souffle de la bouche de Dieu.

 He shall not depart [5493] out of darkness; [2822] the flame [7957] shall dry up [3001] his branches, [3127] and by the breath [7307] of his mouth [6310] shall he go away. [5493]

 Qu'il ne compte pas sur la vanité qui le séduit; car la vanité sera sa récompense.

 Let not him that is deceived [8582] trust [0539] in vanity: [7723] for vanity [7723] shall be his recompence. [8545]

 Avant le temps, il prendra fin, et ses branches ne reverdiront point.

 It shall be accomplished [4390] before [3808] his time, [3117] and his branch [3712] shall not be green. [7488]

 On arrachera ses fruits non mûrs, comme à une vigne; on jettera sa fleur, comme celle d'un olivier.

 He shall shake off [2554] his unripe grape [1154] as the vine, [1612] and shall cast off [7993] his flower [5328] as the olive. [2132]

 Car la famille de l'hypocrite est stérile, et le feu dévore les tentes de l'homme corrompu.

 For the congregation [5712] of hypocrites [2611] [shall be] desolate, [1565] and fire [0784] shall consume [0398] the tabernacles [0168] of bribery. [7810]

 Il conçoit le tourment, et il enfante la peine; et son ventre prépare une déception."

 They conceive [2029] mischief, [5999] and bring forth [3205] vanity, [0205] and their belly [0990] prepareth [3559] deceit. [4820]

 Et Job prit la parole, et dit:

 Then Job [0347] answered [6030] and said, [0559]

 J'ai souvent entendu de pareils discours; vous êtes tous des consolateurs fâcheux.

 I have heard [8085] many [7227] such things: miserable [5999] comforters [5162] [are] ye all.

 N'y aura-t-il point de fin à ces discours en l'air? Et qu'est-ce qui te force à me répondre?

 Shall vain [7307] words [1697] have an end? [7093] or what emboldeneth [4834] thee that thou answerest? [6030]

 Moi aussi, je parlerais comme vous, si vous étiez à ma place. J'accumulerais des paroles contre vous; je hocherais la tête sur vous;

 I also could speak [1696] as ye [do]: if [3863] your soul [5315] were [3426] in my soul's [5315] stead, I could heap up [2266] words [4405] against you, and shake [5128] mine head [7218] at you. [1119]

 Je vous fortifierais avec ma bouche, et le mouvement de mes lèvres vous soulagerait.

 [But] I would strengthen [0553] you with [1119] my mouth, [6310] and the moving [5205] of my lips [8193] should asswage [2820] [your grief].

 Si je parle, ma douleur ne sera point soulagée. Si je me tais, en sera-t-elle diminuée?

 Though I speak, [1696] my grief [3511] is not asswaged: [2820] and [though] I forbear, [2308] what am I eased? [1980]

 Maintenant il m'a épuisé. Tu as dévasté toute ma famille,

 But now he hath made me weary: [3811] thou hast made desolate [8074] all my company. [5712]

 Tu m'as saisi, et cela témoigne contre moi; ma maigreur s'est élevée contre moi, elle m'accuse en face.

 And thou hast filled me with wrinkles, [7059] [which] is a witness [5707] [against me]: and my leanness [3585] rising up [6965] in me beareth witness [6030] to my face. [6440]

 Sa fureur m'a déchiré, et s'est acharnée sur moi. Il a grincé des dents contre moi; mon ennemi aiguise contre moi ses yeux.

 He teareth [2963] [me] in his wrath, [0639] who hateth [7852] me: he gnasheth [2786] upon me with his teeth; [8127] mine enemy [6862] sharpeneth [3913] his eyes [5869] upon me.

 Ils ont ouvert contre moi leur bouche; ils m'ont frappé à la joue pour m'outrager; ils se réunissent tous ensemble contre moi.

 They have gaped [6473] upon me with their mouth; [6310] they have smitten [5221] me upon the cheek [3895] reproachfully; [2781] they have gathered [4390] themselves together [3162] against me.

 Dieu m'a livré à l'impie; il m'a jeté aux mains des méchants.

 God [0410] hath delivered [5462] me to the ungodly, [5760] and turned me over [3399] into the hands [3027] of the wicked. [7563]

 J'étais en repos, et il m'a écrasé; il m'a saisi à la gorge, et il m'a brisé. Il m'a posé en butte à ses traits.

 I was at ease, [7961] but he hath broken me asunder: [6565] he hath also taken [0270] [me] by my neck, [6203] and shaken me to pieces, [6327] and set me up [6965] for his mark. [4307]

 Ses flèches m'environnent; il me perce les reins, et ne m'épargne pas; il répand à terre mon fiel.

 His archers [7228] compass me round about, [5437] he cleaveth [6398] my reins [3629] asunder, and doth not spare; [2550] he poureth out [8210] my gall [4845] upon the ground. [0776]

 Il me fait plaie sur plaie; il court sur moi comme un guerrier.

 He breaketh [6555] me with breach [6556] upon [6440] breach, [6556] he runneth [7323] upon me like a giant. [1368]

 J'ai cousu un sac sur ma peau; j'ai souillé mon front dans la poussière;

 J'ai le visage tout enflammé, à force de pleurer, et l'ombre de la mort est sur mes paupières,

 Quoiqu'il n'y ait point de crime dans mes mains, et que ma prière soit pure.

 Ô terre, ne cache point mon sang, et qu'il n'y ait aucun lieu où s'arrête mon cri!

 À présent même, voici, j'ai mon témoin dans les cieux, et mon garant dans les hauts lieux.

 Mes amis se moquent de moi: c'est vers Dieu que mon œil se tourne en pleurant,

 Pour qu'il décide entre l'homme et Dieu, entre le fils d'Adam et son semblable.

 Car les années qui me sont comptées s'en vont, et j'entre dans un chemin d'où je ne reviendrai pas!

 When a few [4557] years [8141] are come, [0857] then I shall go [1980] the way [0734] [whence] I shall not return. [7725]

 Mon souffle se perd; mes jours s'éteignent; le tombeau m'attend!

 My breath [7307] is corrupt, [2254] my days [3117] are extinct, [2193] the graves [6913] [are ready] for me.

 Certes, je suis entouré de railleurs, et mon œil veille toute la nuit au milieu de leurs insultes.

 [Are there] not mockers [2049] with me? and doth not mine eye [5869] continue [3885] in their provocation? [4784]

 Dépose un gage, sois ma caution auprès de toi-même; car qui voudrait répondre pour moi?

 Lay down [7760] now, put me in a surety [6148] with thee; who [is] he [that] will strike [8628] hands [3027] with me?

 Tu as fermé leur cœur à l'intelligence; c'est pourquoi tu ne les feras pas triompher.

 For thou hast hid [6845] their heart [3820] from understanding: [7922] therefore shalt thou not exalt [7311] [them].

 Tel livre ses amis au pillage, dont les enfants auront les yeux consumés.

 He that speaketh [5046] flattery [2506] to [his] friends, [7453] even the eyes [5869] of his children [1121] shall fail. [3615]

 On a fait de moi la fable des peuples, un être à qui l'on crache au visage.

 He hath made [3322] me also a byword [4914] of the people; [5971] and aforetime [6440] I was as a tabret. [8611]

 Et mon œil s'est consumé de chagrin, et tous mes membres sont comme une ombre.

 Mine eye [5869] also is dim [3543] by reason of sorrow, [3708] and all my members [3338] [are] as a shadow. [6738]

 Les hommes droits en sont consternés, et l'innocent est irrité contre l'impie.

 Upright [3477] [men] shall be astonied [8074] at this, and the innocent [5355] shall stir up [5782] himself against the hypocrite. [2611]

 Le juste néanmoins persévère dans sa voie, et celui dont les mains sont pures redouble de constance.

 The righteous [6662] also shall hold on [0270] his way, [1870] and he that hath clean [2890] hands [3027] shall be [3254] stronger and stronger. [0555]

 Mais, pour vous tous, allons, recommencez! Je ne trouverai pas un sage parmi vous.

 Quand je crie au tombeau: Tu es mon père! et aux vers: Vous êtes ma mère et ma sœur!

 Où est donc mon espérance? Et mon espérance, qui pourrait la voir?

 Elle descendra aux portes du Sépulcre, quand nous irons ensemble reposer dans la poussière!

 Alors Bildad, de Shuach, prit la parole et dit:

 Pourquoi sommes-nous regardés comme des bêtes, et sommes-nous stupides à vos yeux?

 Ô toi qui te déchires toi-même dans ta fureur, la terre sera-t-elle abandonnée à cause de toi, et le rocher sera-t-il transporté hors de sa place?

 He teareth [2963] himself [5315] in his anger: [0639] shall the earth [0776] be forsaken [5800] for thee? and shall the rock [6697] be removed [6275] out of his place? [4725]

 Oui, la lumière du méchant s'éteindra, et la flamme de son feu ne brillera pas.

 Yea, the light [0216] of the wicked [7563] shall be put out, [1846] and the spark [7632] of his fire [0784] shall not shine. [5050]

 La lumière s'obscurcira dans sa tente, et la lampe s'éteindra au-dessus de lui.

 The light [0216] shall be dark [2821] in his tabernacle, [0168] and his candle [5216] shall be put out [1846] with him.

 Ses pas si puissants seront restreints, et son propre conseil le renversera.

 The steps [6806] of his strength [0202] shall be straitened, [3334] and his own counsel [6098] shall cast him down. [7993]

 Car il sera pris dans les filets par ses pieds, et il marchera sur le piège.

 For he is cast [7971] into a net [7568] by his own feet, [7272] and he walketh [1980] upon a snare. [7639]

 Le lacet le tiendra par le talon, et le filet le saisira:

 The gin [6341] shall take [0270] [him] by the heel, [6119] [and] the robber [6782] shall prevail [2388] against him.

 Une corde est cachée pour lui sous terre, et une trappe sur son sentier.

 The snare [2256] [is] laid [2934] for him in the ground, [0776] and a trap [4434] for him in the way. [5410]

 De tous côtés des terreurs l'assiégeront, et feront courir ses pieds çà et là.

 Terrors [1091] shall make him afraid [1204] on every side, [5439] and shall drive [6327] him to his feet. [7272]

 Sa vigueur sera affamée; la calamité se tiendra prête à ses côtés.

 Il dévorera les membres de son corps, il dévorera ses membres, le premier-né de la mort!

 On l'arrachera de sa tente, objet de sa confiance; on l'amènera au roi des épouvantements.

 On habitera dans sa tente, qui ne sera plus à lui; le soufre sera répandu sur sa demeure.

 It shall dwell [7931] in his tabernacle, [0168] because [it is] none [1097] of his: brimstone [1614] shall be scattered [2219] upon his habitation. [5116]

 En bas ses racines sécheront, et en haut ses branches seront coupées.

 His roots [8328] shall be dried up [3001] beneath, and above [4605] shall his branch [7105] be cut off. [5243]

 Sa mémoire disparaîtra de la terre, et on ne prononcera plus son nom sur les places.

 His remembrance [2143] shall perish [0006] from the earth, [0776] and he shall have no name [8034] in [6440] the street. [2351]

 On le chassera de la lumière dans les ténèbres, et on le bannira du monde.

 He shall be driven [1920] from light [0216] into darkness, [2822] and chased [5074] out of the world. [8398]

 Il n'aura ni lignée, ni descendance au milieu de son peuple, ni survivant dans ses habitations.

 He shall neither have son [5209] nor nephew [5220] among his people, [5971] nor any remaining [8300] in his dwellings. [4033]

 Ceux d'Occident seront stupéfaits du jour de sa ruine, et ceux d'Orient en seront saisis d'horreur.

 Tel est le sort de l'injuste. Telle est la destinée de celui qui ne connaît pas Dieu.

 Alors Job prit la parole, et dit:

 Jusqu'à quand affligerez-vous mon âme, et m'accablerez-vous de paroles?

 Voilà déjà dix fois que vous m'outragez: vous n'avez pas honte de me maltraiter?

 Vraiment si j'ai failli, ma faute demeure avec moi.

 Si vraiment vous vous élevez contre moi, si vous me reprochez l'opprobre où je me trouve,

 Sachez donc que c'est Dieu qui m'a fait tort, et qui a tendu ses filets autour de moi.

 Voici, je crie à la violence, et on ne me répond pas; je crie au secours, et il n'y a point de justice!

 Il a fermé mon chemin, et je ne puis passer; il a mis des ténèbres sur mes sentiers.

 He hath fenced up [1443] my way [0734] that I cannot pass, [5674] and he hath set [7760] darkness [2822] in my paths. [5410]

 Il m'a dépouillé de ma gloire; il a ôté la couronne de ma tête.

 He hath stripped [6584] me of my glory, [3519] and taken [5493] the crown [5850] [from] my head. [7218]

 Il m'a détruit de tous côtés, et je m'en vais; il a arraché, comme un arbre, mon espérance.

 He hath destroyed [5422] me on every side, [5439] and I am gone: [3212] and mine hope [8615] hath he removed [5265] like a tree. [6086]

 Il a allumé sa colère contre moi, et il m'a tenu pour l'un de ses ennemis.

 He hath also kindled [2734] his wrath [0639] against me, and he counteth [2803] me unto him as [one of] his enemies. [6862]

 Ses troupes sont venues ensemble; elles ont dressé contre moi leurs chaussées, et se sont campées autour de ma tente.

 His troops [1416] come [0935] together, [3162] and raise up [5549] their way [1870] against me, and encamp [2583] round about [5439] my tabernacle. [0168]

 Il a éloigné de moi mes frères, et ceux qui me connaissaient se sont écartés comme des étrangers;

 He hath put my brethren [0251] far [7368] from me, and mine acquaintance [3045] are verily estranged [2114] from me.

 Mes proches m'ont abandonné, et mes connaissances m'ont oublié.

 My kinsfolk [7138] have failed, [2308] and my familiar friends [3045] have forgotten [7911] me.

 Les hôtes de ma maison et mes servantes m'ont traité comme un étranger; je suis devenu un inconnu pour eux.

 They that dwell [1481] in mine house, [1004] and my maids, [0519] count [2803] me for a stranger: [2114] I am an alien [5237] in their sight. [5869]

 J'ai appelé mon serviteur, il ne m'a pas répondu; de ma propre bouche, j'ai dû le supplier.

 I called [7121] my servant, [5650] and he gave [me] no answer; [6030] I intreated [2603] him with [1119] my mouth. [6310]

 Mon haleine est insupportable à ma femme, et ma prière aux fils de ma mère.

 My breath [7307] is strange [2114] to my wife, [0802] though I intreated [2589] for the children's [1121] [sake] of mine own body. [0990]

 Les petits enfants eux-mêmes me méprisent: si je veux me lever, ils parlent contre moi.

 Yea, young children [5759] despised [3988] me; I arose, [6965] and they spake [1696] against me.

 Tous mes intimes m'ont en abomination, et ceux que j'aimais se sont tournés contre moi.

 All my inward [5475] friends [4962] abhorred [8581] me: and they whom I loved [0157] are turned [2015] against me.

 Mes os se sont attachés à ma peau et à ma chair, et je me suis échappé avec la peau de mes dents.

 Ayez pitié de moi, ayez pitié de moi, vous, mes amis! Car la main de Dieu m'a frappé.

 Have pity [2603] upon me, have pity [2603] upon me, O ye my friends; [7453] for the hand [3027] of God [0433] hath touched [5060] me.

 Pourquoi me persécutez-vous comme Dieu, et ne pouvez-vous vous rassasier de ma chair?

 Why do ye persecute [7291] me as God, [0410] and are not satisfied [7646] with my flesh? [1320]

 Oh! je voudrais que mes paroles fussent écrites quelque part! Je voudrais qu'elles fussent inscrites dans un livre;

 Oh that [5414] my words [4405] were now [0645] written! [3789] oh that [5414] they were printed [2710] in a book! [5612]

 Qu'avec un burin de fer et avec du plomb, elles fussent gravées sur le roc, pour toujours!

 That they were graven [2672] with an iron [1270] pen [5842] and lead [5777] in the rock [6697] for ever! [5703]

 Pour moi, je sais que mon Rédempteur est vivant, qu'à la fin il se lèvera sur la terre,

 For I know [3045] [that] my redeemer [1350] liveth, [2416] and [that] he shall stand [6965] at the latter [0314] [day] upon the earth: [6083]

 Et qu'après cette peau qui se détruit, et hors de ma chair, je verrai Dieu;

 And [though] after [0310] my skin [5785] [worms] destroy [5362] this [body], yet in my flesh [1320] shall I see [2372] God: [0433]

 Moi, je le verrai, à moi propice; mes yeux le verront, et non un autre. Mes reins se consument en mon sein!

 Whom I shall see [2372] for myself, and mine eyes [5869] shall behold, [7200] and not another; [2114] [though] my reins [3629] be consumed [3615] within [2436] me.

 Si vous dites: Comment le poursuivrons-nous, et trouverons-nous en lui la cause de son malheur?

 But ye should say, [0559] Why persecute [7291] we him, seeing the root [8328] of the matter [1697] is found [4672] in me?

 Craignez l'épée pour vous-mêmes, car la fureur est un crime digne de l'épée, afin que vous sachiez qu'il y a un jugement.

 J'ai entendu une leçon outrageante, mais l'esprit tire de mon intelligence une réponse.

 I have heard [8085] the check [4148] of my reproach, [3639] and the spirit [7307] of my understanding [0998] causeth me to answer. [6030]

 Ne sais-tu pas que, de tout temps, depuis que Dieu a mis l'homme sur la terre,

 Knowest [3045] thou [not] this of old, [5703] since man [0120] was placed [7760] upon earth, [0776]

 Le triomphe du méchant est de peu de durée, et la joie de l'impie n'a qu'un moment?

 That the triumphing [7445] of the wicked [7563] [is] short, [7138] and the joy [8057] of the hypocrite [2611] [but] for a moment? [7281]

 Quand son élévation monterait jusqu'aux cieux, et quand sa tête atteindrait les nues,

 Though his excellency [7863] mount up [5927] to the heavens, [8064] and his head [7218] reach [5060] unto the clouds; [5645]

 Il périra pour toujours, comme son ordure; ceux qui le voyaient diront: Où est-il?

 [Yet] he shall perish [0006] for ever [5331] like his own dung: [1561] they which have seen [7200] him shall say, [0559] Where [is] he? [0335]

 Il s'envolera comme un songe, et on ne le trouvera plus; il s'évanouira comme un rêve de la nuit.

 He shall fly away [5774] as a dream, [2472] and shall not be found: [4672] yea, he shall be chased away [5074] as a vision [2384] of the night. [3915]

 L'œil qui l'a vu ne le verra plus, et son lieu ne l'apercevra plus.

 The eye [5869] also [which] saw [7805] him shall [see him] no more; [3254] neither shall his place [4725] any more behold [7789] him.

 Ses enfants feront la cour aux pauvres, et ses propres mains restitueront ses biens.

 His children [1121] shall seek to please [7521] the poor, [1800] and his hands [3027] shall restore [7725] their goods. [0202]

 Ses os sont pleins de jeunesse, mais elle reposera avec lui dans la poussière.

 Sa nourriture se changera dans ses entrailles, et deviendra dans son sein du fiel d'aspic.

 [Yet] his meat [3899] in his bowels [4578] is turned, [2015] [it is] the gall [4846] of asps [6620] within [7130] him.

 Il a englouti des richesses, et il les vomira; Dieu les arrachera de son ventre.

 He hath swallowed down [1104] riches, [2428] and he shall vomit [6958] them up again: God [0410] shall cast them out [3423] of his belly. [0990]

 Il sucera du venin d'aspic; la langue de la vipère le tuera.

 He shall suck [3243] the poison [7219] of asps: [6620] the viper's [0660] tongue [3956] shall slay [2026] him.

 Il ne verra plus les ruisseaux, les fleuves, les torrents de miel et de lait.

 He shall not see [7200] the rivers, [6390] the floods, [5104] the brooks [5158] of honey [1706] and butter. [2529]

 Il rendra le fruit de son travail, et ne l'avalera pas; il restituera à proportion de ce qu'il aura amassé, et ne s'en réjouira pas.

 That which he laboured [3022] for shall he restore, [7725] and shall not swallow [it] down: [1104] according to [his] substance [2428] [shall] the restitution [8545] [be], and he shall not rejoice [5965] [therein].

 Parce qu'il a foulé, abandonné le pauvre, pillé la maison au lieu de la bâtir;

 Because he hath oppressed [7533] [and] hath forsaken [5800] the poor; [1800] [because] he hath violently taken away [1497] an house [1004] which he builded [1129] not;

 Parce qu'il n'a pas connu le repos dans son avidité, il ne sauvera rien de ce qu'il a tant désiré;

 Surely he shall not feel [3045] quietness [7961] in his belly, [0990] he shall not save [4422] of that which he desired. [2530]

 Rien n'échappait à sa voracité, c'est pourquoi son bonheur ne durera pas.

 There shall none of his meat [0400] be left; [8300] therefore shall no man look [2342] for his goods. [2898]

 Au comble de l'abondance, il sera dans la gêne; les mains de tous les malheureux se jetteront sur lui.

 In the fulness [4390] of his sufficiency [5607] he shall be in straits: [3334] every hand [3027] of the wicked [6001] shall come [0935] upon him.

 Il arrivera que pour lui remplir le ventre, Dieu enverra contre lui l'ardeur de sa colère; il la fera pleuvoir sur lui et entrer dans sa chair.

 [When] he is about to fill [4390] his belly, [0990] [God] shall cast [7971] the fury [2740] of his wrath [0639] upon him, and shall rain [4305] [it] upon him while he is eating. [3894]

 Il fuira devant les armes de fer, l'arc d'airain le transpercera.

 He shall flee [1272] from the iron [1270] weapon, [5402] [and] the bow [7198] of steel [5154] shall strike him through. [2498]

 Il arrachera la flèche, et elle sortira de son corps, et le fer étincelant, de son foie; les frayeurs de la mort viendront sur lui.

 It is drawn, [8025] and cometh out [3318] of the body; [1465] yea, the glittering [1300] sword cometh out [1980] of his gall: [4846] terrors [0367] [are] upon him.

 Toutes les calamités sont réservées à ses trésors, un feu qu'on n'aura pas besoin de souffler le dévorera, et ce qui restera dans sa tente sera consumé.

 All darkness [2822] [shall be] hid [2934] in his secret places: [6845] a fire [0784] not blown [5301] shall consume [0398] him; it shall go ill [3415] with him that is left [8300] in his tabernacle. [0168]

 Les cieux découvriront son iniquité, et la terre s'élèvera contre lui.

 The heaven [8064] shall reveal [1540] his iniquity; [5771] and the earth [0776] shall rise up [6965] against him.

 Le revenu de sa maison sera emporté. Tout s'écoulera au jour de la colère.

 The increase [2981] of his house [1004] shall depart, [1540] [and his goods] shall flow away [5064] in the day [3117] of his wrath. [0639]

 Telle est la part que Dieu réserve à l'homme méchant, tel est l'héritage que Dieu lui assigne.

 This [is] the portion [2506] of a wicked [7563] man [0120] from God, [0430] and the heritage [5159] appointed [0561] unto him by God. [0410]

 Et Job prit la parole, et dit:

 But Job [0347] answered [6030] and said, [0559]

 Écoutez attentivement mes discours, et que cela me tienne lieu de vos consolations!

 Hear [8085] diligently [8085] my speech, [4405] and let this be your consolations. [8575]

 Supportez-moi, et je parlerai; et, après que j'aurai parlé, tu te moqueras.

 Mais est-ce à un homme que s'adresse ma plainte? Et comment ne perdrais-je pas toute patience?

 Regardez-moi, et soyez étonnés, et mettez la main sur la bouche.

 Quand j'y pense, je suis éperdu, et un frisson saisit ma chair.

 Pourquoi les méchants vivent-ils, vieillissent-ils, et croissent-ils en force?

 Wherefore do the wicked [7563] live, [2421] become old, [6275] yea, are mighty [1396] in power? [2428]

 Leur postérité s'établit devant eux, avec eux, et leurs rejetons sont sous leurs yeux.

 Their seed [2233] is established [3559] in their sight [6440] with them, and their offspring [6631] before their eyes. [5869]

 Leurs maisons sont en paix, à l'abri de la crainte, et la verge de Dieu n'est pas sur eux.

 Their houses [1004] [are] safe [7965] from fear, [6343] neither [is] the rod [7626] of God [0433] upon them.

 Leur taureau n'est jamais impuissant, leur génisse vêle et n'avorte pas.

 Their bull [7794] gendereth, [5674] and faileth [1602] not; their cow [6510] calveth, [6403] and casteth not her calf. [7921]

 Ils font courir devant eux leurs enfants comme un troupeau, et leur progéniture bondit.

 Ils chantent avec le tambourin et la harpe, ils s'égaient au son du hautbois,

 Ils passent leurs jours dans le bonheur, et ils descendent au Sépulcre en un moment.

 Et cependant ils ont dit à Dieu: "Éloigne-toi de nous, nous ne voulons pas connaître tes voies.

 Qu'est-ce que le Tout-Puissant, pour que nous le servions? Et que gagnerions-nous à le prier?"

 What [is] the Almighty, [7706] that we should serve [5647] him? and what profit [3276] should we have, if we pray [6293] unto him?

 Voici, leur bonheur n'est-il pas en leurs mains? (Que le conseil des méchants soit loin de moi!)

 Lo, their good [2898] [is] not in their hand: [3027] the counsel [6098] of the wicked [7563] is far [7368] from me.

 Combien de fois arrive-t-il que la lampe des méchants s'éteigne, que leur ruine vienne sur eux, que Dieu leur partage leurs lots dans sa colère,

 How oft is the candle [5216] of the wicked [7563] put out! [1846] and [how oft] cometh [0935] their destruction [0343] upon them! [God] distributeth [2505] sorrows [2256] in his anger. [0639]

 Qu'ils soient comme la paille au souffle du vent, et comme la balle enlevée par le tourbillon?

 They are as stubble [8401] before [6440] the wind, [7307] and as chaff [4671] that the storm [5492] carrieth away. [1589]

 Vous dites: "Dieu réserve la peine à ses enfants;" mais qu'Il le punisse lui-même, afin qu'il le sente!

 God [0433] layeth up [6845] his iniquity [0205] for his children: [1121] he rewardeth [7999] him, and he shall know [3045] [it].

 Qu'il voie de ses propres yeux sa ruine, qu'il boive la colère du Tout-Puissant!

 His eyes [5869] shall see [7200] his destruction, [3589] and he shall drink [8354] of the wrath [2534] of the Almighty. [7706]

 Car, que lui importe sa maison après lui, quand le nombre de ses mois est tranché?

 For what pleasure [2656] [hath] he in his house [1004] after [0310] him, when the number [4557] of his months [2320] is cut off in the midst? [2686]

 Enseignerait-on la science à Dieu, lui qui juge ceux qui sont élevés?

 Shall [any] teach [3925] God [0410] knowledge? [1847] seeing he judgeth [8199] those that are high. [7311]

 L'un meurt au sein du bien-être, tout à son aise et en repos.

 One dieth [4191] in his full [8537] strength, [6106] being wholly at ease [7946] and quiet. [7961]

 Ses flancs sont chargés de graisse, et ses os comme abreuvés de moelle;

 His breasts [5845] are full [4390] of milk, [2461] and his bones [6106] are moistened [8248] with marrow. [4221]

 Un autre meurt dans l'amertume de son âme, n'ayant jamais goûté le bonheur:

 And another dieth [4191] in the bitterness [4751] of his soul, [5315] and never eateth [0398] with pleasure. [2896]

 Ils sont couchés ensemble dans la poussière, et les vers les couvrent.

 They shall lie down [7901] alike [3162] in the dust, [6083] and the worms [7415] shall cover [3680] them.

 Voici, je connais vos pensées et les desseins que vous formez contre moi.

 Behold, I know [3045] your thoughts, [4284] and the devices [4209] [which] ye wrongfully imagine [2554] against me.

 Car vous dites: Où est la maison de l'homme opulent, et où est la tente, demeure des méchants?

 For ye say, [0559] Where [is] the house [1004] of the prince? [5081] and where [are] the dwelling [4908] places [0168] of the wicked? [7563]

 N'avez-vous jamais interrogé les voyageurs, et n'avez-vous pas reconnu, par leurs témoignages,

 Have ye not asked [7592] them that go by [5674] the way? [1870] and do ye not know [5234] their tokens, [0226]

 Qu'au jour de la calamité, le méchant est épargné, et qu'au jour des colères, il est éloigné?

 That the wicked [7451] is reserved [2820] to the day [3117] of destruction? [0343] they shall be brought forth [2986] to the day [3117] of wrath. [5678]

 Qui lui représente en face sa conduite, et qui lui rend ce qu'il a fait?

 Who shall declare [5046] his way [1870] to his face? [6440] and who shall repay [7999] him [what] he hath done? [6213]

 Il est porté au tombeau, et, sur le tertre, il veille encore.

 Yet shall he be brought [2986] to the grave, [6913] and shall remain [8245] in the tomb. [1430]

 Les mottes de la vallée lui sont légères; après lui, suivent à la file tous les hommes, et devant lui, la foule est innombrable.

 The clods [7263] of the valley [5158] shall be sweet [4985] unto him, and every man [0120] shall draw [4900] after [0310] him, as [there are] innumerable [0369] [4557] before [6440] him.

 Comment donc me donnez-vous des consolations vaines? De vos réponses, ce qui reste, c'est la fausseté.

 How then comfort [5162] ye me in vain, [1892] seeing in your answers [8666] there remaineth [7604] falsehood? [4604]

 Alors Éliphaz, de Théman, prit la parole, et dit:

 Then Eliphaz [0464] the Temanite [8489] answered [6030] and said, [0559]

 L'homme est-il utile à Dieu?

 Can a man [1397] be profitable [5532] unto God, [0410] as [3588] he that is wise [7919] may be profitable [5532] unto himself?

 C'est à lui-même que le sage est utile. Le Tout-Puissant a-t-il de l'intérêt à ce que tu sois juste? Gagne-t-il quelque chose à ce que tu marches dans l'intégrité?

 [Is it] any pleasure [2656] to the Almighty, [7706] that thou art righteous? [6663] or [is it] gain [1215] [to him], that thou makest thy ways [1870] perfect? [8552]

 Est-ce par crainte de toi, qu'il te reprend, et qu'il entre en jugement avec toi?

 Will he reprove [3198] thee for fear [3374] of thee? will he enter [0935] with thee into judgment? [4941]

 Ta méchanceté n'est-elle pas grande, et tes iniquités ne sont-elles pas sans nombre?

 [Is] not thy wickedness [7451] great? [7227] and thine iniquities [5771] infinite? [7093]

 Tu exigeais des gages de tes frères, sans motif; tu privais de leurs vêtements ceux qui étaient nus.

 For thou hast taken a pledge [2254] from thy brother [0251] for nought, [2600] and stripped [6584] the naked [6174] of their clothing. [0899]

 Tu ne donnais pas d'eau à boire à l'homme altéré, et tu refusais le pain à l'homme affamé.

 Thou hast not given water [4325] to the weary [5889] to drink, [8248] and thou hast withholden [4513] bread [3899] from the hungry. [7457]

 Tu livrais la terre à celui qui était puissant, et celui pour qui tu avais des égards y habitait.

 But [as for] the mighty [2220] man, [0376] he had the earth; [0776] and the honourable [5375] [6440] man dwelt [3427] in it.

 Tu renvoyais les veuves les mains vides, et les bras des orphelins étaient brisés.

 Thou hast sent [7971] widows [0490] away empty, [7387] and the arms [2220] of the fatherless [3490] have been broken. [1792]

 C'est pour cela que les pièges sont autour de toi, qu'une subite frayeur t'épouvante,

 Therefore snares [6341] [are] round about [5439] thee, and sudden [6597] fear [6343] troubleth [0926] thee;

 Ou que les ténèbres t'empêchent de voir, et que le débordement des eaux te submerge.

 Or darkness, [2822] [that] thou canst not see; [7200] and abundance [8229] of waters [4325] cover [3680] thee.

 Dieu n'est-il pas là-haut dans les cieux? Regarde le front des étoiles: combien elles sont élevées!

 [Is] not God [0433] in the height [1363] of heaven? [8064] and behold [7200] the height [7218] of the stars, [3556] how high [7311] they are!

 Et tu as dit: "Qu'est-ce que Dieu connaît? Jugera-t-il à travers l'obscurité?

 And thou sayest, [0559] How doth God [0410] know? [3045] can he judge [8199] through the dark cloud? [6205]

 Les nues sont pour lui un voile, et il ne voit rien; il se promène sur la voûte des cieux."

 Thick clouds [5645] [are] a covering [5643] to him, that he seeth [7200] not; and he walketh [1980] in the circuit [2329] of heaven. [8064]

 Veux-tu suivre l'ancien chemin, où ont marché les hommes d'iniquité,

 Hast thou marked [8104] the old [5769] way [0734] which wicked [0205] men [4962] have trodden? [1869]

 Qui ont été retranchés avant le temps, et dont un fleuve a emporté les fondations,

 Which were cut down [7059] out of time, [6256] whose foundation [3247] was overflown [3332] with a flood: [5104]

 Qui disaient à Dieu: "Éloigne-toi de nous!" Et que leur avait fait le Tout-Puissant?

 Which said [0559] unto God, [0410] Depart [5493] from us: and what can the Almighty [7706] do [6466] for them?

 Il avait rempli leurs maisons de biens! (Ah! loin de moi le conseil des méchants!)

 Yet he filled [4390] their houses [1004] with good [2896] [things]: but the counsel [6098] of the wicked [7563] is far [7368] from me.

 Les justes le verront et se réjouiront; l'innocent se moquera d'eux:

 The righteous [6662] see [7200] [it], and are glad: [8055] and the innocent [5355] laugh them to scorn. [3932]

 "Certainement notre adversaire a été détruit; le feu a dévoré ce qui en restait."

 Whereas [0518] our substance [7009] is not cut down, [3582] but the remnant [3499] of them the fire [0784] consumeth. [0398]

 Attache-toi donc à Lui, et tu seras en paix, et il t'en arrivera du bien.

 Acquaint [5532] now thyself with him, and be at peace: [7999] thereby good [2896] shall come [0935] unto thee.

 Reçois de sa bouche l'instruction, et mets ses paroles dans ton cœur.

 Receive, [3947] I pray thee, the law [8451] from his mouth, [6310] and lay up [7760] his words [0561] in thine heart. [3824]

 Si tu reviens au Tout-Puissant, tu seras rétabli; éloigne l'iniquité de ta tente,

 If thou return [7725] to the Almighty, [7706] thou shalt be built up, [1129] thou shalt put away iniquity [5766] far [7368] from thy tabernacles. [0168]

 Jette l'or dans la poussière, et l'or d'Ophir dans les rochers des torrents,

 Then shalt thou lay up [7896] gold [1220] as [5921] dust, [6083] and the [gold] of Ophir [0211] as the stones [6697] of the brooks. [5158]

 Et le Tout-Puissant sera ton or, il sera pour toi et argent et trésors.

 Yea, the Almighty [7706] shall be thy defence, [1220] and thou shalt have plenty [8443] of silver. [3701]

 Car alors tu feras tes délices du Tout-Puissant, et tu élèveras ton visage vers Dieu.

 For then shalt thou have thy delight [6026] in the Almighty, [7706] and shalt lift up [5375] thy face [6440] unto God. [0433]

 Tu le supplieras, et il t'exaucera, et tu lui rendras tes vœux.

 Thou shalt make thy prayer [6279] unto him, and he shall hear [8085] thee, and thou shalt pay [7999] thy vows. [5088]

 Si tu formes un dessein, il te réussira, et la lumière resplendira sur tes voies.

 Thou shalt also decree [1504] a thing, [0562] and it shall be established [6965] unto thee: and the light [0216] shall shine [5050] upon thy ways. [1870]

 Quand on aura humilié quelqu'un, et que tu diras: Qu'il soit élevé! Dieu délivrera celui qui avait les yeux baissés.

 When [men] are cast down, [8213] then thou shalt say, [0559] [There is] lifting up; [1466] and he shall save [3467] the humble [7807] [5869] person.

 Il délivrera le coupable; il sera délivré par la pureté de tes mains.

 He shall deliver [4422] the island [0336] of the innocent: [5355] and it is delivered [4422] by the pureness [1252] of thine hands. [3709]

 Et Job prit la parole, et dit:

 Then Job [0347] answered [6030] and said, [0559]

 Maintenant encore ma plainte est une révolte, et pourtant ma main comprime mes soupirs.

 Even to day [3117] [is] my complaint [7879] bitter: [4805] my stroke [3027] is heavier [3513] than my groaning. [0585]

 Oh! si je savais où le trouver, j'irais jusqu'à son trône,

 Oh that [5414] I knew [3045] where I might find [4672] him! [that] I might come [0935] [even] to his seat! [8499]

 J'exposerais ma cause devant lui, et je remplirais ma bouche de preuves;

 I would order [6186] [my] cause [4941] before [6440] him, and fill [4390] my mouth [6310] with arguments. [8433]

 Je saurais ce qu'il me répondrait, et je comprendrais ce qu'il me dirait.

 I would know [3045] the words [4405] [which] he would answer [6030] me, and understand [0995] what he would say [0559] unto me.

 Contesterait-il avec moi dans la grandeur de sa force? Non, seulement il ferait attention à moi.

 Will he plead [7378] against me [5978] with [his] great [7230] power? [3581] No; but he would put [7760] [strength] in me.

 Ce serait alors un juste qui raisonnerait avec lui, et je serais absous pour toujours par mon juge.

 There the righteous [3477] might dispute [3198] with him; so should I be delivered [6403] for ever [5331] from my judge. [8199]

 Voici, si je vais à l'Orient, il n'y est pas; si je vais à l'Occident, je ne le découvre pas.

 Behold, I go [1980] forward, [6924] but he [is] not [there]; and backward, [0268] but I cannot perceive [0995] him:

 Est-il occupé au Nord, je ne le vois pas. Se cache-t-il au Midi, je ne l'aperçois pas.

 On the left hand, [8040] where he doth work, [6213] but I cannot behold [2372] [him]: he hideth [5848] himself on the right hand, [3225] that I cannot see [7200] [him]:

 Il sait la voie que j'ai suivie; qu'il m'éprouve, j'en sortirai comme l'or.

 But he knoweth [3045] the way [1870] that I take: [5978] [when] he hath tried [0974] me, I shall come forth [3318] as gold. [2091]

 Mon pied s'est attaché à ses pas, j'ai gardé sa voie, et je ne m'en suis pas détourné.

 My foot [7272] hath held [0270] his steps, [0838] his way [1870] have I kept, [8104] and not declined. [5186]

 Je ne me suis point écarté du commandement de ses lèvres, j'ai tenu aux paroles de sa bouche plus qu'à ma provision ordinaire.

 Neither have I gone back [4185] from the commandment [4687] of his lips; [8193] I have esteemed [6845] the words [0561] of his mouth [6310] more than my necessary [2706] [food].

 Mais il n'a qu'une pensée; qui l'en fera revenir? Ce que son âme désire, il le fait.

 But he [is] in one [0259] [mind], and who can turn [7725] him? and [what] his soul [5315] desireth, [0183] even [that] he doeth. [6213]

 Il achèvera ce qu'il a décidé de moi, et il a dans l'esprit bien d'autres choses pareilles à celle-ci.

 For he performeth [7999] [the thing that is] appointed [2706] for me: and many [7227] such [2007] [things are] with him.

 C'est pourquoi sa présence m'épouvante; quand j'y pense, j'ai peur de lui.

 Therefore am I troubled [0926] at his presence: [6440] when I consider, [0995] I am afraid [6342] of him.

 Dieu a amolli mon cœur, et le Tout-Puissant m'a épouvanté.

 For God [0410] maketh my heart [3820] soft, [7401] and the Almighty [7706] troubleth [0926] me:

 Car je n'ai pas été retranché avant l'arrivée des ténèbres, et il n'a pas éloigné de ma face l'obscurité.

 Because I was not cut off [6789] before [6440] the darkness, [2822] [neither] hath he covered [3680] the darkness [0652] from my face. [6440]

 Pourquoi n'y a-t-il pas des temps réservés par le Tout-Puissant? Et pourquoi ceux qui le connaissent ne voient-ils pas ses jours?

 Why, seeing times [6256] are not hidden [6845] from the Almighty, [7706] do they that know [3045] him not see [2372] his days? [3117]

 On remue les bornes; on ravit les troupeaux, et on les fait paître;

 [Some] remove [5381] the landmarks; [1367] they violently take away [1497] flocks, [5739] and feed [7462] [thereof].

 On emmène l'âne des orphelins, on prend pour gage le bœuf de la veuve;

 They drive away [5090] the ass [2543] of the fatherless, [3490] they take the widow's [0490] ox [7794] for a pledge. [2254]

 On fait écarter les pauvres du chemin, et les affligés du pays sont contraints de se cacher.

 They turn [5186] the needy [0034] out of the way: [1870] the poor [6041] [6035] of the earth [0776] hide [2244] themselves together. [3162]

 Voici, ils sont dans le désert comme des ânes sauvages; ils sortent pour leur travail, espérant une proie; la steppe leur donne le pain pour les enfants.

 Behold, [as] wild asses [6501] in the desert, [4057] go they forth [3318] to their work; [6467] rising betimes [7836] for a prey: [2964] the wilderness [6160] [yieldeth] food [3899] for them [and] for [their] children. [5288]

 Ils moissonnent leur pâture dans les champs, ils maraudent dans la vigne de l'impie;

 They reap [7114] [every one] his corn [1098] in the field: [7704] and they gather [3953] the vintage [3754] of the wicked. [7563]

 Ils passent la nuit nus, faute de vêtement, et n'ont pas de quoi se couvrir contre le froid;

 They cause the naked [6174] to lodge [3885] without clothing, [3830] that [they have] no covering [3682] in the cold. [7135]

 Ils sont percés par la pluie des montagnes, et, manquant d'abri, ils embrassent le rocher.

 They are wet [7372] with the showers [2230] of the mountains, [2022] and embrace [2263] the rock [6697] for want of a shelter. [4268]

 On arrache l'orphelin à la mamelle, on prend des gages sur le pauvre,

 They pluck [1497] the fatherless [3490] from the breast, [7699] and take a pledge [2254] of the poor. [6041]

 On le force à marcher nu, sans vêtements, on fait porter les gerbes à des affamés.

 They cause [him] to go [1980] naked [6174] without clothing, [3830] and they take away [5375] the sheaf [6016] [from] the hungry; [7457]

 Ceux qui pressent l'huile dans leurs maisons, ceux qui foulent dans leurs pressoirs, ont soif.

 [Which] make oil [6671] within [0996] their walls, [7791] [and] tread [1869] [their] winepresses, [3342] and suffer thirst. [6770]

 Du sein de la ville, les mourants se lamentent; l'âme des blessés crie; et Dieu ne prend pas garde à ces indignités!

 Men [4962] groan [5008] from out of the city, [5892] and the soul [5315] of the wounded [2491] crieth out: [7768] yet God [0433] layeth [7760] not folly [8604] [to them].

 En voici d'autres qui se révoltent contre la lumière, qui ne connaissent pas ses voies, et ne se tiennent pas dans ses sentiers.

 They are of those that rebel [4775] against the light; [0216] they know [5234] not the ways [1870] thereof, nor abide [3427] in the paths [5410] thereof.

 Le meurtrier se lève au point du jour; il tue le pauvre et l'indigent, et, de nuit, il dérobe comme un voleur.

 The murderer [7523] rising [6965] with the light [0216] killeth [6991] the poor [6041] and needy, [0034] and in the night [3915] is as a thief. [1590]

 L'œil de l'adultère épie le soir; il dit: "Aucun œil ne me verra," et il se voile le visage.

 The eye [5869] also of the adulterer [5003] waiteth [8104] for the twilight, [5399] saying, [0559] No eye [5869] shall see [7789] me: and disguiseth [5643] [7760] [his] face. [6440]

 Ils forcent les maisons dans les ténèbres, ils se tiennent enfermés le jour, ils ne savent pas ce que c'est que la lumière.

 In the dark [2822] they dig through [2864] houses, [1004] [which] they had marked [2856] for themselves in the daytime: [3119] they know [3045] not the light. [0216]

 Car le matin leur est à tous comme l'ombre de la mort; si quelqu'un les reconnaît, ils ont des frayeurs mortelles.

 For the morning [1242] [is] to them even as [3162] the shadow of death: [6757] if [one] know [5234] [them, they are in] the terrors [1091] of the shadow of death. [6757]

 Ils disparaissent comme un corps léger sur la surface de l'eau; leur héritage est maudit sur la terre; ils ne prennent plus le chemin des vignes.

 He [is] swift [7031] as [6440] the waters; [4325] their portion [2513] is cursed [7043] in the earth: [0776] he beholdeth [6437] not the way [1870] of the vineyards. [3754]

 La sécheresse et la chaleur consument les eaux de la neige; ainsi le Sépulcre dévore ceux qui pèchent.

 Drought [6723] and heat [2527] consume [1497] the snow [7950] waters: [4325] [so doth] the grave [7585] [those which] have sinned. [2398]

 Le sein qui les porta les oublie; les vers font d'eux bonne chère; on ne se souvient plus d'eux; l'injuste est brisé comme du bois.

 The womb [7358] shall forget [7911] him; the worm [7415] shall feed sweetly [4988] on him; he shall be no more remembered; [2142] and wickedness [5766] shall be broken [7665] as a tree. [6086]

 Lui qui tourmentait la femme stérile, sans enfants, et ne faisait aucun bien à la veuve;

 He evil entreateth [7462] the barren [6135] [that] beareth [3205] not: and doeth not good [3190] to the widow. [0490]

 Qui entraînait les puissants par sa force; qui se levait et nul n'était sûr de sa vie:

 He draweth [4900] also the mighty [0047] with his power: [3581] he riseth up, [6965] and no [man] is sure [0539] of life. [2416]

 Dieu lui donnait de la sécurité, et il s'y appuyait; et ses yeux étaient sur leurs voies.

 [Though] it be given [5414] him [to be] in safety, [0983] whereon he resteth; [8172] yet his eyes [5869] [are] upon their ways. [1870]

 Ils s'étaient élevés: un peu de temps encore, ils ne sont plus; ils s'affaissent, ils sont emportés comme les autres; ils sont coupés comme une tête d'épi.

 They are exalted [7426] for a little while, [4592] but are gone and brought low; [4355] they are taken out of the way [7092] as all [other], and cut off [5243] as the tops [7218] of the ears of corn. [7641]

 S'il n'en est pas ainsi, qui me convaincra de mensonge, et mettra à néant mon discours?

 And if [it be] not [so] now, [0645] who will make me a liar, [3576] and make [7760] my speech [4405] nothing worth? [0408]
