 Vanité des vanités, dit l'Ecclésiaste; vanité des vanités, tout est vanité.

 Vanity [1892] of vanities, [1892] saith [0559] the Preacher, [6953] vanity [1892] of vanities; [1892] all [is] vanity. [1892]

 Quel avantage a l'homme de tout le travail auquel il se livre sous le soleil?

 What profit [3504] hath a man [0120] of all his labour [5999] which he taketh [5998] under the sun? [8121]

 Une génération passe, et une autre vient; mais la terre subsiste toujours.

 [One] generation [1755] passeth away, [1980] and [another] generation [1755] cometh: [0935] but the earth [0776] abideth [5975] for ever. [5769]

 Le soleil se lève, et le soleil se couche, et il soupire après le lieu d'où il se lève de nouveau.

 The sun [8121] also ariseth, [2224] and the sun [8121] goeth down, [0935] and hasteth [7602] to his place [4725] where he arose. [2224]

 Le vent va vers le midi, et tourne vers le nord; il va tournoyant çà et là, et revient à ses circuits.

 The wind [7307] goeth [1980] toward the south, [1864] and turneth about [5437] unto the north; [6828] it whirleth [1980] about [5437] continually, [5437] and the wind [7307] returneth again [7725] according to his circuits. [5439]

 Tous les fleuves vont à la mer, et la mer n'est point remplie; les fleuves continuent à aller vers le lieu d'où ils viennent.

 All the rivers [5158] run [1980] into the sea; [3220] yet the sea [3220] [is] not full; [4392] unto the place [4725] from whence the rivers [5158] come, [1980] thither they return [7725] again. [3212]

 Toutes choses travaillent plus que l'homme ne saurait dire; l'œil n'est jamais rassasié de voir, ni l'oreille lasse d'entendre.

 All things [1697] [are] full of labour; [3023] man [0376] cannot [3808] [3201] utter [1696] [it]: the eye [5869] is not satisfied [7646] with seeing, [7200] nor the ear [0241] filled [4390] with hearing. [8085]

 Ce qui a été, c'est ce qui sera; ce qui s'est fait, c'est ce qui se fera, et il n'y a rien de nouveau sous le soleil.

 The thing that hath been, it [is that] which shall be; and that which is done [6213] [is] that which shall be done: [6213] and [there is] no new [2319] [thing] under the sun. [8121]

 Y a-t-il une chose dont on puisse dire: Vois ceci, c'est nouveau? Elle a déjà été dans les siècles qui furent avant nous.

 Is there [3426] [any] thing [1697] whereof it may be said, [0559] See, [7200] this [is] new? [2319] it hath been already [3528] of old time, [5769] which was before [6440] us.

 On ne se souvient plus des choses d'autrefois; de même on ne se souviendra point des choses à venir, parmi ceux qui viendront plus tard.

 [There is] no remembrance [2146] of former [7223] [things]; neither shall there be [any] remembrance [2146] of [things] that are to come [0314] with [those] that shall come after. [0314]

 Moi, l'Ecclésiaste, j'ai été roi sur Israël à Jérusalem;

 I the Preacher [6953] was king [4428] over Israel [3478] in Jerusalem. [3389]

 Et j'ai appliqué mon cœur à rechercher et à sonder avec sagesse tout ce qui se fait sous les cieux; c'est là une occupation pénible que Dieu a donnée aux hommes, afin qu'ils s'y exercent.

 And I gave [5414] my heart [3820] to seek [1875] and search out [8446] by wisdom [2451] concerning all [things] that are done [6213] under heaven: [8064] this sore [7451] travail [6045] hath God [0430] given [5414] to the sons [1121] of man [0120] to be exercised [6031] therewith.

 J'ai vu tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil, et voilà, tout est vanité et tourment d'esprit.

 I have seen [7200] all the works [4639] that are done [6213] under the sun; [8121] and, behold, all [is] vanity [1892] and vexation [7469] of spirit. [7307]

 Ce qui est courbé ne peut se redresser; et ce qui manque ne peut être compté.

 [That which is] crooked [5791] cannot [3808] [3201] be made straight: [8626] and that which is wanting [2642] cannot [3808] [3201] be numbered. [4487]

 J'ai parlé en mon cœur, et j'ai dit: Voici, j'ai grandi et surpassé en sagesse tous ceux qui ont été avant moi sur Jérusalem, et mon cœur a vu beaucoup de sagesse et de science;

 I communed [1696] with mine own heart, [3820] saying, [0559] Lo, I am come to great estate, [1431] and have gotten more [3254] wisdom [2451] than all [they] that have been before [6440] me in Jerusalem: [3389] yea, my heart [3820] had great [7235] experience [7200] of wisdom [2451] and knowledge. [1847]

 Et j'ai appliqué mon cœur à connaître la sagesse, et à connaître la sottise et la folie; mais j'ai connu que cela aussi était un tourment d'esprit.

 And I gave [5414] my heart [3820] to know [3045] wisdom, [2451] and to know [3045] madness [1947] and folly: [5531] I perceived [3045] that this also [1571] is vexation [7475] of spirit. [7307]

 Car avec beaucoup de sagesse, il y a beaucoup de chagrin; et celui qui accroît sa connaissance, accroît sa douleur.

 For in much [7230] wisdom [2451] [is] much [7230] grief: [3708] and he that increaseth [3254] knowledge [1847] increaseth [3254] sorrow. [4341]

 J'ai dit en mon cœur: Allons, que je t'éprouve maintenant par la joie, et jouis du bonheur; mais voici, cela est aussi une vanité.

 I said [0559] in mine heart, [3820] Go to [3212] now, I will prove [5254] thee with mirth, [8057] therefore enjoy [7200] pleasure: [2896] and, behold, this also [is] vanity. [1892]

 J'ai dit du rire: Insensé! et de la joie: À quoi sert-elle?

 I said [0559] of laughter, [7814] [It is] mad: [1984] and of mirth, [8057] What doeth [6213] it? [2090]

 J'ai résolu en mon cœur de livrer ma chair à l'attrait du vin, tandis que mon cœur se guiderait avec sagesse, et de m'attacher à la folie, jusques à ce que je visse ce qu'il est bon aux hommes de faire sous les cieux, pendant le nombre des jours de leur vie.

 I sought [8446] in mine heart [3820] to give [4900] myself [1320] unto wine, [3196] yet acquainting [5090] mine heart [3820] with wisdom; [2451] and to lay hold [0270] on folly, [5531] till I might see [7200] what [was] that good [2896] for the sons [1121] of men, [0120] which they should do [6213] under the heaven [8064] all [4557] the days [3117] of their life. [2416]

 J'ai fait de grands ouvrages; je me suis bâti des maisons; je me suis planté des vignes;

 I made me great [1431] works; [4639] I builded [1129] me houses; [1004] I planted [5193] me vineyards: [3754]

 Je me suis fait des jardins et des vergers, et j'y ai planté toutes sortes d'arbres fruitiers;

 I made [6213] me gardens [1593] and orchards, [6508] and I planted [5193] trees [6086] in them of all [kind of] fruits: [6529]

 Je me suis fait des réservoirs d'eaux, pour en arroser le parc planté d'arbres.

 I made [6213] me pools [1295] of water, [4325] to water [8248] therewith the wood [3293] that bringeth forth [6779] trees: [6086]

 J'ai acquis des serviteurs et des servantes, et j'ai eu leurs enfants, nés en ma maison; et j'ai eu plus de gros et de menu bétail que tous ceux qui ont été avant moi à Jérusalem;

 I got [7069] [me] servants [5650] and maidens, [8198] and had servants born [1121] in my house; [1004] also I had great [7235] possessions [4735] of great [1241] and small cattle [6629] above all that were in Jerusalem [3389] before [6440] me:

 Je me suis aussi amassé de l'argent et de l'or, et les richesses des rois et des provinces; je me suis procuré des chanteurs et des chanteuses, et les délices des hommes, des femmes en grand nombre.

 I gathered [3664] me also silver [3701] and gold, [2091] and the peculiar treasure [5459] of kings [4428] and of the provinces: [4082] I gat [6213] me men singers [7891] and women singers, [7891] and the delights [8588] of the sons [1121] of men, [0120] [as] musical instruments, [7705] and that of all sorts. [7705]

 Je me suis agrandi, et je me suis accru plus que tous ceux qui ont été avant moi à Jérusalem; et même ma sagesse est demeurée avec moi.

 So I was great, [1431] and increased [3254] more than all that were before [6440] me in Jerusalem: [3389] also my wisdom [2451] remained [5975] with me.

 Enfin, je n'ai rien refusé à mes yeux de tout ce qu'ils ont désiré, et je n'ai épargné aucune joie à mon cœur; car mon cœur s'est réjoui de tout mon travail, et c'est la part que j'ai eue de tout mon travail.

 And whatsoever mine eyes [5869] desired [7592] I kept [0680] not from them, I withheld [4513] not my heart [3820] from any joy; [8057] for my heart [3820] rejoiced [8056] in all my labour: [5999] and this was my portion [2506] of all my labour. [5999]

 Et j'ai considéré tous les ouvrages que mes mains avaient faits, et le travail auquel je m'étais livré pour les faire; et voici, tout est vanité et tourment d'esprit; et il n'y a aucun avantage sous le soleil.

 Then I looked [6437] on all the works [4639] that my hands [3027] had wrought, [6213] and on the labour [5999] that I had laboured [5998] to do: [6213] and, behold, all [was] vanity [1892] and vexation [7469] of spirit, [7307] and [there was] no profit [3504] under the sun. [8121]

 Puis je me suis mis à considérer et la sagesse et la sottise et la folie. (Car que fera l'homme qui viendra après le roi en ce qui a été déjà fait?)

 And I turned [6437] myself to behold [7200] wisdom, [2451] and madness, [1947] and folly: [5531] for what [can] the man [0120] [do] that cometh [0935] after [0310] the king? [4428] [even] that which hath been already [3528] done. [6213]

 Et j'ai vu que la sagesse a de l'avantage sur la folie, comme la lumière a de l'avantage sur les ténèbres.

 Then I saw [7200] that [3426] wisdom [2451] excelleth [3504] folly, [5531] as far as light [0216] excelleth [3504] darkness. [2822]

 Le sage a ses yeux dans sa tête, et l'insensé marche dans les ténèbres; mais j'ai reconnu aussi que la même chose leur arrive à tous.

 The wise man's [2450] eyes [5869] [are] in his head; [7218] but the fool [3684] walketh [1980] in darkness: [2822] and I myself perceived [3045] also that one [0259] event [4745] happeneth [7136] to them all.

 Et j'ai dit en mon cœur: Il m'arrivera comme à l'insensé. Pourquoi donc ai-je été plus sage? Et j'ai dit en mon cœur, que cela aussi est une vanité.

 Then said [0559] I in my heart, [3820] As it happeneth [4745] to the fool, [3684] so it happeneth [7136] even to me; and why was I then [0227] more [3148] wise? [2449] Then I said [1696] in my heart, [3820] that this also [1571] [is] vanity. [1892]

 La mémoire du sage ne sera pas plus éternelle que celle de l'insensé; puisque, dans les jours à venir, tout sera depuis longtemps oublié. Comment le sage meurt-il de même que l'insensé?

 For [there is] no remembrance [2146] of the wise [2450] more than [5973] of the fool [3684] for ever; [5769] seeing that which now [3528] [is] in the days [3117] to come [0935] shall all be forgotten. [7911] And how dieth [4191] the wise [2450] [man]? as the fool. [3684]

 Et j'ai haï cette vie; car les choses qui se font sous le soleil m'ont déplu; car tout est vanité et tourment d'esprit.

 Therefore I hated [8130] life; [2416] because the work [4639] that is wrought [6213] under the sun [8121] [is] grievous [7451] unto me: for all [is] vanity [1892] and vexation [7469] of spirit. [7307]

 Et j'ai haï tout le travail que j'ai fait sous le soleil; parce que je le laisserai à l'homme qui sera après moi.

 Yea, I hated [8130] all my labour [5999] which I had taken [6001] under the sun: [8121] because I should leave [3240] it unto the man [0120] that shall be after [0310] me.

 Et qui sait s'il sera sage ou insensé? Cependant, il sera maître de tout le travail auquel je me suis livré, et de ce que j'ai fait avec sagesse sous le soleil. Cela aussi est une vanité.

 And who knoweth [3045] whether he shall be a wise [2450] [man] or a fool? [5530] yet shall he have rule [7980] over all my labour [5999] wherein I have laboured, [5998] and wherein I have shewed myself wise [2449] under the sun. [8121] This [is] also vanity. [1892]

 C'est pourquoi je me suis mis à n'espérer plus rien de tout le travail auquel je m'étais livré sous le soleil.

 Therefore I went about [5437] to cause my heart [3820] to despair [2976] of all the labour [5999] which I took [5998] under the sun. [8121]

 Car tel homme a travaillé avec sagesse, science et succès, et il laisse tout en partage à un homme qui n'y a point travaillé. Cela aussi est une vanité et un grand mal.

 For there is [3426] a man [0120] whose labour [5999] [is] in wisdom, [2451] and in knowledge, [1847] and in equity; [3788] yet to a man [0120] that hath not laboured [5998] therein shall he leave [5414] it [for] his portion. [2506] This also [is] vanity [1892] and a great [7227] evil. [7451]

 Que reste-t-il, en effet, à l'homme de tout son travail, et du tourment de son cœur, de ce dont il se fatigue sous le soleil?

 For what hath [1933] man [0120] of all his labour, [5999] and of the vexation [7475] of his heart, [3820] wherein [1931] he hath laboured [6001] under the sun? [8121]

 Car tous ses jours ne sont que douleurs, et son occupation n'est que chagrin; même la nuit son cœur ne repose point. Cela aussi est une vanité.

 For all his days [3117] [are] sorrows, [4341] and his travail [6045] grief; [3708] yea, his heart [3820] taketh not rest [7901] in the night. [3915] This is also vanity. [1892]

 Ne vaut-il pas mieux pour l'homme, manger et boire, et faire jouir son âme du bien-être, au milieu de son travail? J'ai vu aussi que cela vient de la main de Dieu.

 [There is] nothing better [2896] for a man, [0120] [than] that he should eat [0398] and drink, [8354] and [that] he should make his soul [5315] enjoy [7200] good [2896] in his labour. [5999] This [2090] also I saw, [7200] that it [was] from the hand [3027] of God. [0430]

 Qui, en effet, a mangé, qui s'est réjoui plus que moi?

 For who can eat, [0398] or who else can hasten [2363] [hereunto], more [2351] than I?

 Car Dieu donne à l'homme qui lui est agréable, la sagesse, la science et la joie; mais il donne au pécheur la tâche de recueillir et d'amasser, afin de donner à celui qui est agréable à Dieu. Cela aussi est une vanité et un tourment d'esprit.

 For [God] giveth [5414] to a man [0120] that [is] good [2896] in his sight [6440] wisdom, [2451] and knowledge, [1847] and joy: [8057] but to the sinner [2398] he giveth [5414] travail, [6045] to gather [0622] and to heap up, [3664] that he may give [5414] to [him that is] good [2896] before [6440] God. [0430] This also [is] vanity [1892] and vexation [7469] of spirit. [7307]

 À toute chose sa saison, et à toute affaire sous les cieux, son temps.

 To every [thing there is] a season, [2165] and a time [6256] to every purpose [2656] under the heaven: [8064]

 Il y a un temps pour naître, et un temps pour mourir; un temps pour planter, et un temps pour arracher ce qui est planté;

 A time [6256] to be born, [3205] and a time [6256] to die; [4191] a time [6256] to plant, [5193] and a time [6256] to pluck up [6131] [that which is] planted; [5193]

 Un temps pour tuer, et un temps pour guérir; un temps pour démolir, et un temps pour bâtir;

 A time [6256] to kill, [2026] and a time [6256] to heal; [7495] a time [6256] to break down, [6555] and a time [6256] to build up; [1129]

 Un temps pour pleurer, et un temps pour rire; un temps pour se lamenter, et un temps pour sauter de joie.

 A time [6256] to weep, [1058] and a time [6256] to laugh; [7832] a time [6256] to mourn, [5594] and a time [6256] to dance; [7540]

 Un temps pour jeter des pierres, et un temps pour les ramasser; un temps pour embrasser, et un temps pour s'éloigner des embrassements;

 A time [6256] to cast away [7993] stones, [0068] and a time [6256] to gather stones [0068] together; [3664] a time [6256] to embrace, [2263] and a time [6256] to refrain [7368] from embracing; [2263]

 Un temps pour chercher, et un temps pour laisser perdre; un temps pour conserver, et un temps pour jeter;

 A time [6256] to get, [1245] and a time [6256] to lose; [0006] a time [6256] to keep, [8104] and a time [6256] to cast away; [7993]

 Un temps pour déchirer, et un temps pour coudre; un temps pour se taire, et un temps pour parler;

 A time [6256] to rend, [7167] and a time [6256] to sew; [8609] a time [6256] to keep silence, [2814] and a time [6256] to speak; [1696]

 Un temps pour aimer, et un temps pour haïr; un temps pour la guerre, et un temps pour la paix.

 A time [6256] to love, [0157] and a time [6256] to hate; [8130] a time [6256] of war, [4421] and a time [6256] of peace. [7965]

 Quel avantage celui qui travaille a-t-il de sa peine?

 What profit [3504] hath he that worketh [6213] in that wherein [0834] he laboureth? [6001]

 J'ai vu l'occupation que Dieu a donnée aux hommes pour s'y exercer.

 I have seen [7200] the travail, [6045] which God [0430] hath given [5414] to the sons [1121] of men [0120] to be exercised [6031] in it.

 Il a fait toute chose belle en son temps; même il a mis le monde dans leur cœur, sans que l'homme puisse toutefois comprendre, depuis le commencement jusques à la fin, l'œuvre que Dieu fait.

 He hath made [6213] every [thing] beautiful [3303] in his time: [6256] also he hath set [5414] the world [5769] in their heart, [3820] so that no [1097] man [0120] can find out [4672] the work [4639] that God [0430] maketh [6213] from the beginning [7218] to the end. [5490]

 J'ai reconnu qu'il n'y a rien de bon pour les hommes, que de se réjouir et de bien faire pendant leur vie.

 I know [3045] that [there is] no good [2896] in them, but for [a man] to rejoice, [8055] and to do [6213] good [2896] in his life. [2416]

 Et même, que chacun mange et boive, et jouisse du bien-être au milieu de tout son travail, c'est un don de Dieu.

 And also that every man [0120] should eat [0398] and drink, [8354] and enjoy [7200] the good [2896] of all his labour, [5999] it [is] the gift [4991] of God. [0430]

 J'ai reconnu que tout ce que Dieu fait, subsiste à toujours; il n'y a rien à y ajouter, ni rien à en retrancher; et Dieu le fait afin qu'on le craigne.

 I know [3045] that, whatsoever God [0430] doeth, [6213] it shall be for ever: [5769] nothing [0369] can be put [3254] to it, nor any thing [0369] taken [1639] from it: and God [0430] doeth [6213] [it], that [men] should fear [3372] before [6440] him.

 Ce qui est, a déjà été, et ce qui doit être a déjà été, et Dieu ramène ce qui est passé.

 That which hath been is now; [3528] and that which is to be hath already [3528] been; and God [0430] requireth [1245] that which is past. [7291]

 J'ai vu encore sous le soleil, qu'au lieu établi pour juger, il y a de la méchanceté, qu'au lieu établi pour la justice, il y a de la méchanceté.

 And moreover I saw [7200] under the sun [8121] the place [4725] of judgment, [4941] [that] wickedness [7562] [was] there; and the place [4725] of righteousness, [6664] [that] iniquity [7562] [was] there.

 Et j'ai dit en mon cœur: Dieu jugera le juste et le méchant; car il y a là un temps pour tout dessein et pour toute œuvre.

 I said [0559] in mine heart, [3820] God [0430] shall judge [8199] the righteous [6662] and the wicked: [7563] for [there is] a time [6256] there for every purpose [2656] and for every work. [4639]

 J'ai dit en mon cœur, au sujet des hommes, que Dieu les éprouverait, et qu'ils verraient eux-mêmes qu'ils ne sont que des bêtes.

 I said [0559] in mine heart [3820] concerning the estate [1700] of the sons [1121] of men, [0120] that God [0430] might manifest [1305] them, and that they might see [7200] that they [1992] themselves are beasts. [0929]

 Car ce qui arrive aux hommes, et ce qui arrive aux bêtes, est une même chose; telle qu'est la mort de l'un, telle est la mort de l'autre; ils ont tous un même souffle, et l'homme n'a nul avantage sur la bête; car tout est vanité.

 For that which befalleth [4745] the sons [1121] of men [0120] befalleth [4745] beasts; [0929] even one [0259] thing befalleth [4745] them: as the one [2088] dieth, [4194] so dieth [4194] the other; [2088] yea, they have all one [0259] breath; [7307] so that a man [0120] hath no preeminence [4195] above a beast: [0929] for all [is] vanity. [1892]

 Tout va en un même lieu; tout a été fait de la poussière, et tout retourne dans la poussière.

 All go [1980] unto one [0259] place; [4725] all are of the dust, [6083] and all turn to dust [6083] again. [7725]

 Qui sait si l'esprit des hommes monte en haut, et si l'esprit de la bête descend en bas dans la terre?

 Who knoweth [3045] the spirit [7307] of man [1121] [0120] that goeth [5927] upward, [4605] and the spirit [7307] of the beast [0929] that goeth [3381] downward [4295] to the earth? [0776]

 Et j'ai vu qu'il n'y a rien de mieux pour l'homme que de se réjouir de ses œuvres; puisque c'est là sa part. Car qui le ramènera pour voir ce qui sera après lui?

 Wherefore I perceive [7200] that [there is] nothing better, [2896] than that a man [0120] should rejoice [8055] in his own works; [4639] for that [is] his portion: [2506] for who shall bring [0935] him to see [7200] what shall be after [0310] him?

 Puis je me suis mis à considérer toutes les oppressions qui se commettent sous le soleil; et voici, les opprimés sont dans les larmes, et ils n'ont point de consolateur; la force est du côté de ceux qui les oppriment: pour eux, point de consolateur.

 So I returned, [7725] and considered [7200] all the oppressions [6217] that are done [6213] under the sun: [8121] and behold the tears [1832] of [such as were] oppressed, [6231] and they had no comforter; [5162] and on the side [3027] of their oppressors [6231] [there was] power; [3581] but they had no comforter. [5162]

 C'est pourquoi j'estime plus les morts qui sont déjà morts, que les vivants qui sont encore en vie;

 Wherefore I praised [7623] the dead [4191] which are already [3528] dead [4191] more than the living [2416] which are yet [5728] alive. [2416]

 Et plus heureux que les uns et les autres, celui qui n'a pas encore existé, et qui n'a point vu les mauvaises actions qui se font sous le soleil.

 Yea, better [2896] [is he] than both [8147] they, which hath not yet [5728] been, who hath not seen [7200] the evil [7451] work [4639] that is done [6213] under the sun. [8121]

 J'ai vu aussi que tout travail et toute habileté dans le travail n'est que jalousie de l'un à l'égard de l'autre. Cela aussi est une vanité et un tourment d'esprit.

 Again, I considered [7200] all travail, [5999] and every right [3788] work, [4639] that for this a man [0376] is envied [7068] of his neighbour. [7453] This [is] also vanity [1892] and vexation [7469] of spirit. [7307]

 L'insensé se croise les mains et se consume lui-même:

 The fool [3684] foldeth [2263] his hands [3027] together, and eateth [0398] his own flesh. [1320]

 Mieux vaut plein le creux de la main avec repos, que plein les deux paumes, avec travail et tourment d'esprit.

 Better [2896] [is] an handful [4393] [3709] [with] quietness, [5183] than both the hands [2651] full [4393] [with] travail [5999] and vexation [7469] of spirit. [7307]

 Je me suis mis à regarder une autre vanité sous le soleil.

 Then I returned, [7725] and I saw [7200] vanity [1892] under the sun. [8121]

 Tel homme est seul, et n'a point de second; il n'a ni fils, ni frère, et toutefois, il n'y a point de fin à tout son travail; même ses yeux ne se rassasient jamais de richesses; il ne se dit point: Pour qui est-ce que je travaille et que je prive mon âme du bien? Cela aussi est une vanité et une pénible occupation.

 There is [3426] one [0259] [alone], and [there is] not a second; [8145] yea, he hath neither child [1121] nor brother: [0251] yet [is there] no end [7093] of all his labour; [5999] neither is his eye [5869] satisfied [7646] with riches; [6239] neither [saith he], For whom do I labour, [6001] and bereave [2637] my soul [5315] of good?  De même si deux couchent ensemble, ils auront chaud; mais celui qui est seul, comment aura-t-il chaud?

 Et si quelqu'un est plus fort qu'un seul, les deux pourront lui résister; et la corde à trois cordons ne se rompt pas si tôt.

 Mieux vaut un enfant pauvre et sage qu'un roi vieux et insensé, qui ne sait pas recevoir de conseil.

 Car tel sort de prison pour régner; et de même, tel étant né roi, devient pauvre.

 J'ai vu tous les vivants qui marchent sous le soleil, entourer l'enfant, le second après le roi, et qui le remplacera.

 Et il n'y avait point de fin à tout le peuple, à tous ceux à la tête desquels il était; cependant ceux qui viendront après ne se réjouiront point à son sujet. Certainement, cela aussi est une vanité et un tourment d'esprit.

 Car, comme le songe naît de la multitude des occupations, ainsi la voix des fous se fait connaître par la multitude des paroles.

 Quand tu auras fait un vœu à Dieu, ne diffère point de l'accomplir; car il ne prend point plaisir aux insensés. Accomplis donc le vœu que tu as fait.

 When thou vowest [5087] a vow [5088] unto God, [0430] defer [0309] not to pay [7999] it; for [he hath] no pleasure [2656] in fools: [3684] pay [7999] that which thou hast vowed. [5087]

 Il vaut mieux que tu ne fasses point de vœux, que d'en faire, et de ne pas les accomplir.

 Better [2896] [is it] that thou shouldest not vow, [5087] than that thou shouldest vow [5087] and not pay. [7999]

 Ne permets pas à ta bouche de te faire pécher, et ne dis pas devant l'envoyé de Dieu, que c'est une erreur. Pourquoi Dieu s'irriterait-il de tes paroles, et détruirait-il l'ouvrage de tes mains?

 Suffer [5414] not thy mouth [6310] to cause thy flesh [1320] to sin; [2398] neither say [0559] thou before [6440] the angel, [4397] that it [was] an error: [7684] wherefore should God [0430] be angry [7107] at thy voice, [6963] and destroy [2254] the work [4639] of thine hands? [3027]

 Car, comme dans la multitude des songes il y a de la vanité, il y en a beaucoup aussi dans la multitude des paroles; mais crains Dieu.

 Si tu vois dans une province le pauvre opprimé, et le droit et la justice violés, ne t'étonne point de cela; car il y en a un qui est plus élevé que celui qui est élevé, et qui y prend garde, et il en est de plus élevés qu'eux.

 Celui qui aime l'argent n'est point rassasié par l'argent, ni celui qui aime l'accroissement des biens. Cela aussi est une vanité.

 He that loveth [0157] silver [3701] shall not be satisfied [7646] with silver; [3701] nor he that loveth [0157] abundance [1995] with increase: [8393] this [is] also vanity. [1892]

 Où il y a beaucoup de bien, il y a beaucoup de gens qui le mangent; et quel avantage en a celui qui le possède, sinon qu'il le voit de ses yeux?

 When goods [2896] increase, [7235] they are increased [7231] that eat [0398] them: and what good [3788] [is there] to the owners [1167] thereof, saving [0518] the beholding [7207] [7212] [of them] with their eyes? [5869]

 Le sommeil du travailleur est doux, soit qu'il mange peu ou beaucoup; mais le rassasiement du riche ne le laisse pas dormir.

 The sleep [8142] of a labouring man [5647] [is] sweet, [4966] whether he eat [0398] little [4592] or much: [7235] but the abundance [7647] of the rich [6223] will not suffer [3240] him to sleep. [3462]

 Il y a un mal fâcheux que j'ai vu sous le soleil: des richesses conservées pour son malheur par celui qui les possède.

 There is [3426] a sore [2470] evil [7451] [which] I have seen [7200] under the sun, [8121] [namely], riches [6239] kept [8104] for the owners [1167] thereof to their hurt. [7451]

 Et ces richesses périssent par un mauvais trafic, et s'il a engendré un fils, il n'aura rien entre les mains.

 But those riches [6239] perish [0006] by evil [7451] travail: [6045] and he begetteth [3205] a son, [1121] and [there is] nothing [0369] [3972] in his hand. [3027]

 Et, comme il est sorti nu du sein de sa mère, il s'en retournera nu, s'en allant comme il est venu; et il n'emportera rien qu'il puisse prendre dans sa main.

 As he came forth [3318] of his mother's [0517] womb, [0990] naked [6174] shall he return [7725] to go [3212] as he came, [0935] and shall take [5375] nothing [3808] [3972] of his labour, [5999] which he may carry away [3212] in his hand. [3027]

 C'est encore ici un mal fâcheux; comme il est venu, il s'en va de même; et quel avantage a-t-il d'avoir travaillé pour du vent?

 And this [2090] also [is] a sore [2470] evil, [7451] [that] in all points [5980] as he came, [0935] so shall he go: [3212] and what profit [3504] hath he that hath laboured [5998] for the wind? [7307]

 Il mange aussi, tous les jours de sa vie, dans les ténèbres, et il a beaucoup de chagrin, de maux et d'irritation.

 All his days [3117] also he eateth [0398] in darkness, [2822] and [he hath] much [7235] sorrow [3707] and wrath [7110] with his sickness. [2483]

 Voici ce que j'ai vu: c'est pour l'homme une chose bonne et agréable que de manger, de boire, et de jouir du bien-être, au milieu de tout le travail auquel il se livre sous le soleil, pendant les jours de vie que Dieu lui a donnés; car c'est là son partage.

 Behold [that] which I have seen: [7200] [it is] good [2896] and comely [3303] [for one] to eat [0398] and to drink, [8354] and to enjoy [7200] the good [2896] of all his labour [5999] that he taketh [5998] under the sun [8121] all [4557] the days [3117] of his life, [2416] which God [0430] giveth [5414] him: for it [is] his portion.  En effet, ce que Dieu donne à tout homme, de richesses et de biens, ce dont il le fait maître, pour en manger, et pour en prendre sa part, et pour s'en réjouir au milieu de son travail, cela est un don de Dieu.

 Every man [0120] also to whom God [0430] hath given [5414] riches [6239] and wealth, [5233] and hath given him power [7980] to eat [0398] thereof, and to take [5375] his portion, [2506] and to rejoice [8055] in his labour; [5999] this [2090] [is] the gift [4991] of God. [0430]

 Car il ne se souviendra pas beaucoup des jours de sa vie, parce que Dieu lui répond par la joie de son cœur.

 For he shall not much [7235] remember [2142] the days [3117] of his life; [2416] because God [0430] answereth [6031] [him] in the joy [8057] of his heart. [3820]

 Il est un mal que j'ai vu sous le soleil, et qui est fréquent parmi les hommes;

 There is [3426] an evil [7451] which I have seen [7200] under the sun, [8121] and it [is] common [7227] among men: [0120]

 C'est qu'il y a tel homme à qui Dieu donne des richesses, des biens et des honneurs, et qui ne manque pour son âme de rien de ce qu'il peut souhaiter; mais Dieu ne le laisse pas maître d'en manger, car un étranger le mangera. Cela est une vanité et un mal fâcheux.

 A man [0376] to whom God [0430] hath given [5414] riches, [6239] wealth, [5233] and honour, [3519] so that he wanteth [2638] nothing for his soul [5315] of all that he desireth, [0183] yet God [0430] giveth him not power [7980] to eat [0398] thereof, but a stranger [0376] [5237] eateth [0398] it: this [is] vanity, [1892] and it [is] an evil [7451] disease.  Quand un homme aurait cent enfants, qu'il aurait vécu de nombreuses années, et que les jours de ses années se seraient multipliés; si son âme ne s'est pas rassasiée de bien, et que même il n'ait point de sépulture, je dis qu'un avorton vaut mieux que lui.

 If a man [0376] beget [3205] an hundred [3967] [children], and live [2421] many [7227] years, [8141] so that the days [3117] of his years [8141] be many, [7227] and his soul [5315] be not filled [7646] with good, [2896] and also [that] he have no burial; [6900] I say, [0559] [that] an untimely birth [5309] [is] better [2896] than he.

 Car il est venu en vain, et s'en va dans les ténèbres, et son nom est couvert de ténèbres;

 For he cometh [0935] in with vanity, [1892] and departeth [3212] in darkness, [2822] and his name [8034] shall be covered [3680] with darkness. [2822]

 Il n'a même point vu le soleil; il n'a rien connu; il a plus de repos que l'autre.

 Moreover he hath not seen [7200] the sun, [8121] nor known [3045] [any thing]: this [2088] hath more rest [5183] than the other. [2088]

 Et quand celui-ci aurait vécu deux fois mille ans, sans jouir d'aucun bien, tous ne vont-ils pas en un même lieu?

 Yea, though [0432] he live [2421] a thousand [0505] years [8141] twice [6471] [told], yet hath he seen [7200] no good: [2896] do not all go [1980] to one [0259] place? [4725]

 Tout le travail de l'homme est pour sa bouche, et toutefois son désir n'est jamais assouvi.

 All the labour [5999] of man [0120] [is] for his mouth, [6310] and yet the appetite [5315] is not filled. [4390]

 Car quel avantage le sage a-t-il sur l'insensé? Quel avantage a l'affligé qui sait se conduire parmi les vivants?

 For what hath the wise [2450] more [3148] than the fool? [3684] what hath the poor, [6041] that knoweth [3045] to walk [1980] before the living? [2416]

 Il vaut mieux voir de ses yeux, que d'avoir des désirs vagues. Cela aussi est une vanité et un tourment d'esprit.

 Better [2896] [is] the sight [4758] of the eyes [5869] than the wandering [1980] of the desire: [5315] this [is] also vanity [1892] and vexation [7469] of spirit. [7307]

 Ce qui existe a déjà été appelé par son nom; et l'on sait que celui qui est homme, ne peut contester avec celui qui est plus fort que lui.

 That which hath been is named [7121] [8034] already, [3528] and it is known [3045] that it [is] man: [0120] neither may [3201] he contend [1777] with him that is mightier [8623] than he.

 Quand on a beaucoup, on a beaucoup de vanité. Quel avantage en a l'homme?

 Seeing there be [3426] many [7235] things [1697] that increase [7235] vanity, [1892] what [is] man [0120] the better? [3148]

 Car qui sait ce qui est bon pour l'homme dans la vie, pendant les jours de la vie de sa vanité, qu'il passe comme une ombre? Et qui peut dire à un homme ce qui sera après lui sous le soleil?

 For who knoweth [3045] what [is] good [2896] for man [0120] in [this] life, [2416] all [4557] the days [3117] of his vain [1892] life [2416] which he spendeth [6213] as a shadow? [6738] for who can tell [5046] a man [0120] what shall be after [0310] him under the sun? [8121]

 Une bonne réputation vaut mieux que le bon parfum; et le jour de la mort, que le jour de la naissance.

 A good name [8034] [is] better [2896] than precious [2896] ointment; [8081] and the day [3117] of death [4194] than the day [3117] of one's birth. [3205]

 Mieux vaut aller dans une maison de deuil, que d'aller dans une maison de festin; car là est la fin de tout homme, et celui qui vit met cela dans son cœur.

 [It is] better [2896] to go [3212] to the house [1004] of mourning, [0060] than to go [3212] to the house [1004] of feasting: [4960] for [0834] that [is] the end [5490] of all men; [0120] and the living [2416] will lay [5414] [it] to his heart. [3820]

 Mieux vaut la tristesse que le rire; car, par la tristesse du visage, le cœur devient joyeux.

 Le cœur des sages est dans la maison de deuil; mais le cœur des insensés est dans la maison de joie.

 The heart [3820] of the wise [2450] [is] in the house [1004] of mourning; [0060] but the heart [3820] of fools [3684] [is] in the house [1004] of mirth. [8057]

 Mieux vaux entendre la répréhension du sage, que d'entendre la chanson des insensés.

 [It is] better [2896] to hear [8085] the rebuke [1606] of the wise, [2450] than for a man [0376] to hear [8085] the song [7892] of fools. [3684]

 Car tel qu'est le bruit des épines sous la chaudière, tel est le rire de l'insensé. Cela aussi est une vanité.

 For as the crackling [6963] of thorns [5518] under a pot, [5518] so [is] the laughter [7814] of the fool: [3684] this also [is] vanity. [1892]

 Certainement l'oppression peut faire perdre le sens au sage; et le présent corrompt le cœur.

 Surely oppression [6233] maketh a wise man [2450] mad; [1984] and a gift [4979] destroyeth [0006] the heart. [3820]

 Mieux vaut la fin d'une chose que son commencement; mieux vaut un esprit patient qu'un esprit hautain.

 Better [2896] [is] the end [0319] of a thing [1697] than the beginning [7225] thereof: [and] the patient [0750] in spirit [7307] [is] better [2896] than the proud [1362] in spirit. [7307]

 Ne te hâte point dans ton esprit de t'irriter; car l'irritation repose dans le sein des insensés.

 Ne dis point: D'où vient que les jours passés étaient meilleurs que ceux-ci? Car ce n'est point par sagesse que tu t'enquiers de cela.

 Say [0559] not thou, What is [the cause] that the former [7223] days [3117] were better [2896] than these? for thou dost not enquire [7592] wisely [2451] concerning this.

 La sagesse est aussi bonne qu'un héritage; elle est un avantage pour ceux qui voient le soleil.

 Wisdom [2451] [is] good [2896] with an inheritance: [5159] and [by it there is] profit [3148] to them that see [7200] the sun. [8121]

 Car on est à couvert à l'ombre de la sagesse et à l'ombre de l'argent; mais la science a cet avantage, que la sagesse fait vivre celui qui la possède.

 For wisdom [2451] [is] a defence, [6738] [and] money [3701] [is] a defence: [6738] but the excellency [3504] of knowledge [1847] [is, that] wisdom [2451] giveth life [2421] to them that have [1167] it.

 Regarde l'œuvre de Dieu; car qui peut redresser ce qu'il aura courbé?

 Consider [7200] the work [4639] of God: [0430] for who can [3201] make [that] straight, [8626] which he hath made crooked? [5791]

 Au jour de la prospérité, sois joyeux; et au jour de l'adversité, prends-y garde; aussi Dieu a fait l'un comme l'autre, afin que l'homme ne trouve rien de ce qui sera après lui.

 In the day [3117] of prosperity [2896] be joyful, [2896] but in the day [3117] of adversity [7451] consider: [7200] God [0430] also hath set [6213] the one over against [5980] the other, to the end [1700] that man [0120] should find [4672] nothing [3808] [3972] after [0310] him.

 J'ai vu tout ceci pendant les jours de ma vanité. Il y a tel juste qui périt dans sa justice, et il y a tel méchant qui prolonge ses jours dans sa méchanceté.

 All [things] have I seen [7200] in the days [3117] of my vanity: [1892] there is [3426] a just [6662] [man] that perisheth [0006] in his righteousness, [6664] and there is [3426] a wicked [7563] [man] that prolongeth [0748] [his life] in his wickedness. [7451]

 Ne sois pas juste à l'excès, et ne te fais pas trop sage; pourquoi te perdrais-tu?

 Be not righteous [6662] over much; [7235] neither make thyself over [3148] wise: [2449] why shouldest thou destroy [8074] thyself?

 Ne sois pas méchant à l'excès, et ne sois point insensé; pourquoi mourrais-tu avant ton temps?

 Be not over much [7235] wicked, [7561] neither be thou foolish: [5530] why shouldest thou die [4191] before thy time? [6256]

 Il est bon que tu retiennes ceci, et que tu ne négliges pas cela; car celui qui craint Dieu, sort de toutes ces choses.

 [It is] good [2896] that thou shouldest take hold [0270] of this; [2088] yea, also from this [2088] withdraw [3240] not thine hand: [3027] for he that feareth [3373] God [0430] shall come forth [3318] of them all.

 La sagesse donne plus de force au sage que dix gouverneurs qui seraient dans une ville.

 Wisdom [2451] strengtheneth [5810] the wise [2450] more than ten [6235] mighty [7989] [men] which are in the city. [5892]

 Certainement il n'y a point d'homme juste sur la terre, qui fasse le bien et qui ne pèche point.

 For [there is] not a just [6662] man [0120] upon earth, [0776] that doeth [6213] good, [2896] and sinneth [2398] not.

 Aussi ne fais point attention à toutes les paroles qu'on dira, de peur que tu n'entendes ton serviteur parler mal de toi.

 Also take [5414] no heed [3820] unto all words [1697] that are spoken; [1696] lest thou hear [8085] thy servant [5650] curse [7043] thee:

 Car ton cœur a reconnu bien des fois que toi aussi tu as mal parlé des autres.

 For oftentimes [6471] [7227] also thine own heart [3820] knoweth [3045] that thou thyself likewise hast cursed [7043] others. [0312]

 J'ai éprouvé tout cela par la sagesse; et j'ai dit: J'acquerrai de la sagesse; mais elle s'est éloignée de moi.

 All this [2090] have I proved [5254] by wisdom: [2451] I said, [0559] I will be wise; [2449] but it [was] far [7350] from me.

 Ce qui est éloigné, ce qui est fort profond, qui peut l'atteindre?

 That which is far off, [7350] and exceeding deep, [6013] [6013] who can find it out? [4672]

 J'ai appliqué mon cœur à connaître, à sonder et à chercher la sagesse et la raison de tout, et à connaître la méchanceté de la folie, et la sottise de la déraison.

 I applied [5437] mine heart [3820] to know, [3045] and to search, [8446] and to seek out [1245] wisdom, [2451] and the reason [2808] [of things], and to know [3045] the wickedness [7562] of folly, [3689] even of foolishness [5531] [and] madness: [1947]

 Et j'ai trouvé plus amère que la mort, la femme dont le cœur est un piège et un filet, et dont les mains sont des liens; celui qui est agréable à Dieu lui échappera; mais le pécheur sera pris par elle.

 And I find [4672] more bitter [4751] than death [4194] the woman, [0802] whose heart [3820] [is] snares [4685] and nets, [2764] [and] her hands [3027] [as] bands: [0612] whoso pleaseth [2896] [6440] God [0430] shall escape [4422] from her; but the sinner [2398] shall be taken [3920] by her.

 Voici, dit l'Ecclésiaste, ce que j'ai trouvé, en examinant les choses une à une pour en trouver la raison.

 Behold, [7200] this have I found, [4672] saith [0559] the preacher, [6953] [counting] one [0259] by one, [0259] to find out [4672] the account: [2808]

 Voici ce que mon âme cherche encore, mais que je n'ai point trouvé. J'ai trouvé un homme entre mille; mais je n'ai pas trouvé une femme entre elles toutes.

 Which yet my soul [5315] seeketh, [1245] but I find [4672] not: one [0259] man [0120] among a thousand [0505] have I found; [4672] but a woman [0802] among all those have I not found. [4672]

 Seulement voici ce que j'ai trouvé: c'est que Dieu a fait l'homme droit; mais ils ont cherché toutes sortes d'imaginations.

 Lo, [7200] this only [0905] have I found, [4672] that God [0430] hath made [6213] man [0120] upright; [3477] but they have sought out [1245] many [7227] inventions. [2810]

 Qui est comme le sage? Et qui connaît l'explication des choses? La sagesse de l'homme fait reluire sa face, et la sévérité de son visage en est changée.

 Who [is] as the wise [2450] [man]? and who knoweth [3045] the interpretation [6592] of a thing? [1697] a man's [0120] wisdom [2451] maketh his face [6440] to shine, [0215] and the boldness [5797] of his face [6440] shall be changed. [8132]

 Observe, je te le dis, le commandement du roi; et cela, à cause du serment fait à Dieu.

 I [counsel thee] to keep [8104] the king's [4428] commandment, [6310] and [that] in regard [1700] of the oath [7621] of God. [0430]

 Ne te hâte point de te retirer de devant sa face, et ne persévère point dans une chose mauvaise; car il fait tout ce qui lui plaît.

 Be not hasty [0926] to go [3212] out of his sight: [6440] stand [5975] not in an evil [7451] thing; [1697] for he doeth [6213] whatsoever pleaseth [2654] him.

 Où est la parole du roi, là est la puissance; et qui lui dira: Que fais-tu?

 Where the word [1697] of a king [4428] [is, there is] power: [7983] and who may say [0559] unto him, What doest [6213] thou?

 Celui qui garde le commandement ne sentira aucun mal, et le cœur du sage connaît le temps et le jugement.

 Whoso keepeth [8104] the commandment [4687] shall feel [3045] no evil [7451] thing: [1697] and a wise man's [2450] heart [3820] discerneth [3045] both time [6256] and judgment. [4941]

 Car dans tout dessein il y a un temps et un jugement, quand le malheur pèse sur l'homme.

 Because to every purpose [2656] there is [3426] time [6256] and judgment, [4941] therefore the misery [7451] of man [0120] [is] great [7227] upon him.

 Car il ne sait pas ce qui doit arriver, et qui lui dira comment cela arrivera?

 For he knoweth [3045] not that which shall be: for who can tell [5046] him when it shall be?

 L'homme n'est point maître de son esprit, pour pouvoir le retenir, et il n'a point de puissance sur le jour de la mort; il n'y a point d'exemption dans cette guerre, et la méchanceté ne délivrera point ceux en qui elle se trouve.

 J'ai vu tout cela, et j'ai appliqué mon cœur à toute œuvre qui se fait sous le soleil. Il y a un temps où l'homme domine sur l'homme pour son malheur.

 Et alors j'ai vu les méchants ensevelis; et ceux qui avaient fait le bien ont passé; ils s'en sont allés loin du lieu saint, et sont oubliés dans la ville. Cela est aussi une vanité.

 Parce que la sentence contre les mauvaises actions ne s'exécute pas promptement, à cause de cela, le cœur des hommes est plein du désir de mal faire.

 Because sentence [6599] against an evil [7451] work [4639] is not executed [6213] speedily, [4120] therefore the heart [3820] of the sons [1121] of men [0120] is fully set [4390] in them to do [6213] evil. [7451]

 Bien que le pécheur fasse le mal cent fois, et qu'il y persévère longtemps, cependant je sais aussi qu'il y aura du bonheur pour ceux qui craignent Dieu, qui craignent devant sa face.

 Though a sinner [2398] do [6213] evil [7451] an hundred [3967] times, and his [days] be prolonged, [0748] yet surely I know [3045] that it shall be well [2896] with them that fear [3373] God, [0430] which fear [3372] before [6440] him:

 Mais il n'y aura point de bonheur pour le méchant, et il ne prolongera pas ses jours plus que l'ombre, parce qu'il ne craint point la face de Dieu.

 But it shall not be well [2896] with the wicked, [7563] neither shall he prolong [0748] [his] days, [3117] [which are] as a shadow; [6738] because he feareth [3373] not before [6440] God. [0430]

 Il est une vanité qui a lieu sur la terre: c'est qu'il y a des justes auxquels il arrive selon l'œuvre des méchants; et il y a aussi des méchants auxquels il arrive selon l'œuvre des justes. J'ai dit que cela aussi est une vanité.

 There is [3426] a vanity [1892] which is done [6213] upon the earth; [0776] that there be [3426] just [6662] [men], unto whom it happeneth [5060] according to the work [4639] of the wicked; [7563] again, there be [3426] wicked [7563] [men], to whom it happeneth [5060] according to the work [4639] of the righteous: [6662] I said [0559] that this also [1571] [is] vanity.  C'est pourquoi j'ai loué la joie, parce qu'il n'est rien de mieux pour l'homme sous le soleil que de manger, et de boire, et de se réjouir; et c'est ce qui lui restera de son travail pendant les jours de sa vie, que Dieu lui donne sous le soleil.

 Then I commended [7623] mirth, [8057] because a man [0120] hath no better [2896] thing under the sun, [8121] than to eat, [0398] and to drink, [8354] and to be merry: [8055] for that shall abide [3867] with him of his labour [5999] the days [3117] of his life, [2416] which God [0430] giveth [5414] him under the sun.  J'ai vu toute l'œuvre de Dieu, j'ai vu que l'homme ne peut trouver la raison de ce qui se fait sous le soleil; bien qu'il se fatigue à la chercher, il ne la trouve pas; et même si le sage dit qu'il la connaît, il ne peut la trouver.

 Then I beheld [7200] all the work [4639] of God, [0430] that a man [0120] cannot [3808] [3201] find out [4672] the work [4639] that is done [6213] under the sun: [8121] because though [0834] [7945] a man [0120] labour [5998] to seek [1245] [it] out, yet he shall not [3808] find [4672] [it]; yea further; though a wise [2450] [man] think [0559] to know [3045] [it], yet shall he not [3808] be able [3201] to find [4672] [it].

 Certainement j'ai appliqué mon cœur à tout cela, pour l'éclaircir, savoir, que les justes et les sages, et leurs actions, sont dans la main de Dieu, et l'amour et la haine; et que les hommes ne connaissent rien de tout ce qui est devant eux.

 Tout arrive également à tous: une même chose pour le juste et pour le méchant, pour celui qui est bon et pur, et pour celui qui est souillé, pour celui qui sacrifie et pour celui qui ne sacrifie point; il en est de l'homme de bien comme du pécheur, de celui qui jure, comme de celui qui craint de jurer.

 All [things come] alike [0834] to all: [there is] one [0259] event [4745] to the righteous, [6662] and to the wicked; [7563] to the good [2896] and to the clean, [2889] and to the unclean; [2931] to him that sacrificeth, [2076] and to him that sacrificeth [2076] not: as [is] the good, [2896] so [is] the sinner; [2398] [and] he that sweareth, [7650] as [he] that feareth [3373] an oath.  Ceci est un mal dans tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil, qu'une même chose arrive à tous. Aussi le cœur des hommes est rempli de malice; la folie est dans leur cœur pendant leur vie; après quoi ils s'en vont chez les morts.

 This [is] an evil [7451] among all [things] that are done [6213] under the sun, [8121] that [there is] one [0259] event [4745] unto all: yea, also the heart [3820] of the sons [1121] of men [0120] is full [4390] of evil, [7451] and madness [1947] [is] in their heart [3824] while they live, [2416] and after [0310] that [they go] to the dead.  Car il y a de l'espérance pour quiconque est encore associé à tous les vivants; et même un chien vivant vaut mieux qu'un lion mort.

 For to him [4310] that is joined [2266] to all the living [2416] there is [3426] hope: [0986] for a living [2416] dog [3611] is better [2896] than a dead [4191] lion. [0738]

 Les vivants, en effet, savent qu'ils mourront, mais les morts ne savent rien; il n'y a plus pour eux de récompense, car leur mémoire est mise en oubli.

 For the living [2416] know [3045] that they shall die: [4191] but the dead [4191] know [3045] not any thing, [3972] neither have they any more a reward; [7939] for the memory [2143] of them is forgotten. [7911]

 Aussi leur amour, leur haine, leur envie a déjà péri, et ils n'ont plus à jamais aucune part dans tout ce qui se fait sous le soleil.

 Also their love, [0160] and their hatred, [8135] and their envy, [7068] is now [3528] perished; [0006] neither have they any more a portion [2506] for ever [5769] in any [thing] that is done [6213] under the sun. [8121]

 Va, mange avec joie ton pain, et bois gaiement ton vin; car Dieu a déjà tes œuvres pour agréables.

 Qu'en tout temps tes vêtements soient blancs, et que l'huile ne manque point sur ta tête.

 Let thy garments [0899] be always [6256] white; [3836] and let thy head [7218] lack [2637] no ointment. [8081]

 Vis joyeusement, tous les jours de la vie de ta vanité, avec la femme que tu aimes, qui t'a été donnée sous le soleil, pour tous les jours de ta vanité; car c'est là ton partage dans la vie, et au milieu de ton travail, que tu fais sous le soleil.

 Live [2416] joyfully [7200] with the wife [0802] whom thou lovest [0157] all the days [3117] of the life [2416] of thy vanity, [1892] which he hath given [5414] thee under the sun, [8121] all the days [3117] of thy vanity: [1892] for that [is] thy portion [2506] in [this] life, [2416] and in thy labour [5999] which thou takest [6001] under the sun.  Tout ce que ta main trouve à faire, fais-le selon ton pouvoir; car il n'y a ni œuvre, ni pensée, ni science, ni sagesse, dans le Sépulcre où tu vas.

 Whatsoever thy hand [3027] findeth [4672] to do, [6213] do [6213] [it] with thy might; [3581] for [there is] no work, [4639] nor device, [2808] nor knowledge, [1847] nor wisdom, [2451] in the grave, [7585] whither thou goest. [1980]

 J'ai vu encore sous le soleil, que la course n'est pas aux agiles, ni le combat aux vaillants, ni le pain aux sages, ni les richesses aux intelligents, ni la faveur aux savants; car tous sont assujettis au temps et aux circonstances.

 I returned, [7725] and saw [7200] under the sun, [8121] that the race [4793] [is] not to the swift, [7031] nor the battle [4421] to the strong, [1368] neither yet bread [3899] to the wise, [2450] nor yet riches [6239] to men of understanding, [0995] nor yet favour [2580] to men of skill; [3045] but time [6256] and chance [6294] happeneth [7136] to them all.

 Car l'homme ne connaît pas même son temps; comme les poissons qui sont pris au filet fatal, et les oiseaux qui sont pris au lacet, ainsi les hommes sont enlacés au temps de l'adversité, lorsqu'elle tombe sur eux tout d'un coup.

 For man [0120] also knoweth [3045] not his time: [6256] as the fishes [1709] that are taken [0270] in an evil [7451] net, [4685] and as the birds [6833] that are caught [0270] in the snare; [6341] so [1992] [are] the sons [1121] of men [0120] snared [3369] in an evil [7451] time, [6256] when it falleth [5307] suddenly [6597] upon them.

 J'ai vu aussi cette sagesse sous le soleil, et elle m'a semblé grande.

 This [2090] wisdom [2451] have I seen [7200] also under the sun, [8121] and it [seemed] great [1419] unto me:

 Il y avait une petite ville, avec peu d'hommes dedans; contre elle vint un grand roi; et il l'investit, et il bâtit contre elle de grands forts.

 [There was] a little [6996] city, [5892] and few [4592] men [0582] within it; and there came [0935] a great [1419] king [4428] against it, and besieged [5437] it, and built [1129] great [1419] bulwarks [4685] against it:

 Mais il s'y trouvait un homme pauvre et sage, qui délivra la ville par sa sagesse. Et nul ne s'est souvenu de cet homme pauvre.

 Now there was found [4672] in it a poor [4542] wise [2450] man, [0376] and he by his wisdom [2451] delivered [4422] the city; [5892] yet no man [0120] remembered [2142] that same poor [4542] man. [0376]

 Alors j'ai dit: La sagesse vaut mieux que la force; et toutefois la sagesse du pauvre est méprisée, et ses paroles ne sont point écoutées.

 Then said [0559] I, Wisdom [2451] [is] better [2896] than strength: [1369] nevertheless the poor man's [4542] wisdom [2451] [is] despised, [0959] and his words [1697] are not heard. [8085]

 Mieux vaut des paroles de sages paisiblement écoutées, que le cri de celui qui domine parmi les insensés.

 The words [1697] of wise [2450] [men are] heard [8085] in quiet [5183] more than the cry [2201] of him that ruleth [4910] among fools. [3684]

 La sagesse vaut mieux que les instruments de guerre, et un seul pécheur fait perdre de grands biens.

 Wisdom [2451] [is] better [2896] than weapons [3627] of war: [7128] but one [0259] sinner [2398] destroyeth [0006] much [7235] good. [2896]

 Les mouches mortes corrompent et font fermenter l'huile du parfumeur; ainsi fait un peu de folie à l'égard de celui qui est estimé pour sa sagesse et pour sa gloire.

 Dead [4194] flies [2070] cause the ointment [8081] of the apothecary [7543] to send forth [5042] a stinking savour: [0887] [so doth] a little [4592] folly [5531] him that is in reputation [3368] for wisdom [2451] [and] honour. [3519]

 Le sage a le cœur à sa droite; mais le fou a le cœur à sa gauche.

 A wise man's [2450] heart [3820] [is] at his right hand; [3225] but a fool's [3684] heart [3820] at his left. [8040]

 Et même, quand l'insensé marche dans le chemin, le sens lui manque; et il dit de chacun: Voilà un insensé.

 Yea also, when he that is a fool [5530] walketh [1980] by the way, [1870] his wisdom [3820] faileth [2638] [him], and he saith [0559] to every one [that] he [is] a fool. [5530]

 Si l'esprit de celui qui domine s'élève contre toi, ne quitte point ta place; car la douceur prévient de grandes fautes.

 If the spirit [7307] of the ruler [4910] rise up [5927] against thee, leave [3240] not thy place; [4725] for yielding [4832] pacifieth [3240] great [1419] offences. [2399]

 Il y a un mal que j'ai vu sous le soleil, comme une erreur qui procède du prince:

 There is [3426] an evil [7451] [which] I have seen [7200] under the sun, [8121] as an error [7684] [which] proceedeth [3318] from [6440] the ruler: [7989]

 C'est que la folie est mise aux plus hauts lieux, et que des riches sont assis dans l'abaissement.

 Folly [5529] is set [5414] in great [7227] dignity, [4791] and the rich [6223] sit [3427] in low place. [8216]

 J'ai vu des serviteurs à cheval, et des princes aller à pied comme des serviteurs.

 I have seen [7200] servants [5650] upon horses, [5483] and princes [8269] walking [1980] as servants [5650] upon the earth. [0776]

 Celui qui creuse une fosse y tombera, et un serpent mordra celui qui fait brèche à une clôture.

 He that diggeth [2658] a pit [1475] shall fall [5307] into it; and whoso breaketh [6555] an hedge, [1447] a serpent [5175] shall bite [5391] him.

 Celui qui remue des pierres en sera blessé; et celui qui fend du bois en sera en danger.

 Whoso removeth [5265] stones [0068] shall be hurt [6087] therewith; [and] he that cleaveth [1234] wood [6086] shall be endangered [5533] thereby.

 Si le fer est émoussé, et qu'il n'en ait pas aiguisé le tranchant, il devra redoubler d'efforts; mais la sagesse a l'avantage de donner de l'adresse.

 If the iron [1270] be blunt, [6949] and he do not whet [7043] the edge, [6440] then must he put [1396] to more strength: [2428] but wisdom [2451] [is] profitable [3504] to direct. [3787]

 Si le serpent mord, quand il n'est pas charmé, le médisant ne vaut pas mieux.

 Surely the serpent [5175] will bite [5391] without enchantment; [3908] and a babbler [3956] [1167] is no better. [3504]

 Les paroles de la bouche du sage sont pleines de grâce; mais les lèvres du fou l'engloutissent.

 The words [1697] of a wise man's [2450] mouth [6310] [are] gracious; [2580] but the lips [8193] of a fool [3684] will swallow up [1104] himself.

 Le commencement des paroles de sa bouche est une folie, et la fin de son discours une pernicieuse sottise.

 The beginning [8462] of the words [1697] of his mouth [6310] [is] foolishness: [5531] and the end [0319] of his talk [6310] [is] mischievous [7451] madness. [1948]

 L'insensé multiplie les paroles; toutefois l'homme ne sait ce qui arrivera; et qui lui annoncera ce qui sera après lui

 A fool [5530] also is full [7235] of words: [1697] a man [0120] cannot tell [3045] what shall be; and what shall be after [0310] him, who can tell [5046] him?

 Le travail des insensés les lasse, parce qu'ils ne savent pas aller à la ville.

 The labour [5999] of the foolish [3684] wearieth [3021] every one of them, because he knoweth [3045] not how to go [3212] to the city. [5892]

 Malheur à toi, pays, dont le roi est un enfant, et dont les princes mangent dès le matin!

 Woe [0337] to thee, O land, [0776] when thy king [4428] [is] a child, [5288] and thy princes [8269] eat [0398] in the morning! [1242]

 Heureux es-tu, pays, dont le roi est de race illustre, et dont les princes mangent quand il est temps, pour réparer leurs forces, et non pour se livrer à la boisson!

 À cause des mains paresseuses le plancher s'affaisse; et à cause des mains lâches, la maison a des gouttières.

 By much slothfulness [6103] the building [4746] decayeth; [4355] and through idleness [8220] of the hands [3027] the house [1004] droppeth through. [1811]

 On fait des repas pour se réjouir, et le vin égaie la vie, et l'argent répond à tout.

 Ne dis point de mal du roi, pas même dans ta pensée; et ne dis point de mal du riche dans la chambre où tu couches; car l'oiseau des cieux emporterait ta voix, et ce qui a des ailes révélerait tes paroles.

 Curse [7043] not the king, [4428] no not in thy thought; [4093] and curse [7043] not the rich [6223] in thy bedchamber: [2315] [4904] for a bird [5775] of the air [8064] shall carry [3212] the voice, [6963] and that which hath [1167] wings [3671] shall tell [5046] the matter. [1697]

 Jette ton pain sur la face des eaux, car avec le temps tu le retrouveras.

 Fais-en part à sept, et même à huit; car tu ne sais pas quel mal peut venir sur la terre.

 Quand les nuées sont pleines, elles répandent de la pluie sur la terre; et quand un arbre tombe, au midi, ou au nord, au lieu où l'arbre est tombé, il demeure.

 If the clouds [5645] be full [4390] of rain, [1653] they empty [7324] [themselves] upon the earth: [0776] and if the tree [6086] fall [5307] toward the south, [1864] or toward the north, [6828] in the place [4725] where the tree [6086] falleth, [5307] there it shall be. [1933]

 Celui qui observe le vent, ne sèmera point; et celui qui regarde les nuées, ne moissonnera point.

 He that observeth [8104] the wind [7307] shall not sow; [2232] and he that regardeth [7200] the clouds [5645] shall not reap. [7114]

 Comme tu ne sais pas quel est le chemin du vent, ni comment se forment les os dans le sein de celle qui est enceinte; de même tu ne connais pas l'œuvre de Dieu, qui a fait toutes choses.

 As thou knowest [3045] not what [is] the way [1870] of the spirit, [7307] [nor] how the bones [6106] [do grow] in the womb [0990] of her that is with child: [4392] even so thou knowest [3045] not the works [4639] of God [0430] who maketh [6213] all.

 Sème ta semence dès le matin, et ne laisse pas reposer ta main le soir; car tu ne sais pas ce qui réussira, ceci ou cela, ou si les deux seront également bons.

 In the morning [1242] sow [2232] thy seed, [2233] and in the evening [6153] withhold [3240] not thine hand: [3027] for thou knowest [3045] not whether [0335] shall prosper, [3787] either this or that, or whether they both [8147] [shall be] alike [0259] good. [2896]

 La lumière est douce, et il est agréable aux yeux de voir le soleil.

 Truly the light [0216] [is] sweet, [4966] and a pleasant [2896] [thing it is] for the eyes [5869] to behold [7200] the sun: [8121]

 Et si un homme vit un grand nombre d'années, qu'il se réjouisse pendant toutes ces années, et qu'il se souvienne des jours de ténèbres, qui sont nombreux. Tout ce qui vient est vanité.

 (12-1) Jeune homme, réjouis-toi dans ton jeune âge, et que ton cœur te rende content aux jours de ta jeunesse; et marche comme ton cœur te mène, et selon le regard de tes yeux; mais sache que pour toutes ces choses Dieu te fera venir en jugement.

 (12-2) Bannis le chagrin de ton cœur, et éloigne les maux de ta chair; car le jeune âge et l'adolescence ne sont que vanité.

 Therefore remove [5493] sorrow [3708] from thy heart, [3820] and put away [5674] evil [7451] from thy flesh: [1320] for childhood [3208] and youth [7839] [are] vanity. [1892]

 (12-3) Mais souviens-toi de ton créateur pendant les jours de ta jeunesse, avant que les jours mauvais viennent, avant qu'arrivent les années dont tu diras: Je n'y prends point de plaisir;

 Remember [2142] now thy Creator [1254] in the days [3117] of thy youth, [0979] while the evil [7451] days [3117] come [0935] not, nor the years [8141] draw nigh, [5060] when thou shalt say, [0559] I have no pleasure [2656] in them;

 (12-4) Avant que le soleil, la lumière, la lune et les étoiles s'obscurcissent, et que les nuées reviennent après la pluie;

 While the sun, [8121] or the light, [0216] or the moon, [3394] or the stars, [3556] be not darkened, [2821] nor the clouds [5645] return [7725] after [0310] the rain: [1653]

 (12-5) Quand les gardes de la maison trembleront, que les hommes forts se courberont, que celles qui moulent cesseront, parce qu'elles seront diminuées; que celles qui regardent par les fenêtres, seront obscurcies;

 In the day [3117] when the keepers [8104] of the house [1004] shall tremble, [2111] and the strong [2428] men [0582] shall bow [5791] themselves, and the grinders [2912] cease [0988] because they are few, [4591] and those that look [7200] out of the windows [0699] be darkened, [2821]

 (12-6) Et que les deux battants de la porte seront fermés sur la rue, quand s'abaissera le bruit de la meule; qu'on se lèvera au chant de l'oiseau, et que toutes les filles du chant seront abattues;

 And the doors [1817] shall be shut [5462] in the streets, [7784] when the sound [6963] of the grinding [2913] is low, [8217] and he shall rise up [6965] at the voice [6963] of the bird, [6833] and all the daughters [1323] of musick [7892] shall be brought low; [7817]

 (12-7) Et que l'on craindra ce qui est élevé, qu'on aura des terreurs en marchant, que l'amandier fleurira, que la sauterelle deviendra pesante, et que l'appétit manquera; car l'homme s'en va vers sa demeure éternelle, et ceux qui pleurent feront le tour des rues;

 Also [when] they shall be afraid [3372] of [that which is] high, [1364] and fears [2849] [shall be] in the way, [1870] and the almond tree [8247] shall flourish, [5006] and the grasshopper [2284] shall be a burden, [5445] and desire [0035] shall fail: [6565] because man [0120] goeth [1980] to his long [5769] home, [1004] and the mourners [5594] go about [5437] the streets: [7784]

 (12-8) Avant que la corde d'argent se rompe, que le vase d'or se brise, que la cruche se casse sur la fontaine, et que la roue se rompe sur la citerne;

 (12-10) Vanité des vanités, dit l'Ecclésiaste, tout est vanité.

 Vanity [1892] of vanities, [1892] saith [0559] the preacher; [6953] all [is] vanity. [1892]

 (12-11) De plus, comme l'Ecclésiaste a été sage, il a aussi enseigné la sagesse au peuple. Il a examiné, il a sondé et mis en ordre beaucoup de sentences.

 And moreover, [3148] because the preacher [6953] was wise, [2450] he still taught [3925] the people [5971] knowledge; [1847] yea, he gave good heed, [0239] and sought out, [2713] [and] set in order [8626] many [7235] proverbs. [4912]

 (12-12) L'Ecclésiaste s'est appliqué à trouver des paroles agréables. Ce qui a été écrit l'a été avec droiture; ce sont des paroles de vérité.

 The preacher [6953] sought [1245] to find out [4672] acceptable [2656] words: [1697] and [that which was] written [3789] [was] upright, [3476] [even] words [1697] of truth. [0571]

 (12-13) Les paroles des sages sont comme des aiguillons, et réunies en recueil, elles sont comme des clous plantés. Celles-ci ont été données par un seul pasteur.

 The words [1697] of the wise [2450] [are] as goads, [1861] and as nails [4930] fastened [5193] [by] the masters [1167] of assemblies, [0627] [which] are given [5414] from one [0259] shepherd. [7462]

 (12-14) Du reste, mon fils, prends garde à ces choses. À faire beaucoup de livres, il n'y a point de fin, et beaucoup d'étude n'est que fatigue pour le corps.

 And further, [3148] by these, [1992] my son, [1121] be admonished: [2094] of making [6213] many [7235] books [5612] [there is] no end; [7093] and much [7235] study [3854] [is] a weariness [3024] of the flesh. [1320]

 (12-15) Écoutons la conclusion de tout ce discours: Crains Dieu, et garde ses commandements; car c'est là le tout de l'homme.

 Let us hear [8085] the conclusion [5490] of the whole matter: [1697] Fear [3372] God, [0430] and keep [8104] his commandments: [4687] for this [is] the whole [duty] of man. [0120]

 (12-16) Car Dieu fera venir toute œuvre en jugement, avec tout ce qui est caché, soit bien, soit mal.

 For God [0430] shall bring [0935] every work [4639] into judgment, [4941] with every secret thing, [5956] whether [it be] good, [2896] or whether [it be] evil. [7451]
