La Parole de YEHOVAH fut adressée à Jonas, fils d'Amitthaï, en ces mots:

 Now the word [1697] of the LORD [3068] came unto Jonah [3124] the son [1121] of Amittai, [0573] saying, [0559]

 Lève-toi, va à Ninive, la grande ville, et crie contre elle; car leur méchanceté est montée jusqu'à moi.

 Arise, [6965] go [3212] to Nineveh, [5210] that great [1419] city, [5892] and cry [7121] against it; for their wickedness [7451] is come up [5927] before [6440] me.

 Mais Jonas se leva pour s'enfuir à Tarsis, de devant la face de YEHOVAH. Il descendit à Japho, et il trouva un navire qui allait à Tarsis; il paya son passage, et y entra pour aller avec eux à Tarsis, de devant la face de YEHOVAH.

 But Jonah [3124] rose up [6965] to flee [1272] unto Tarshish [8659] from the presence [6440] of the LORD, [3068] and went down [3381] to Joppa; [3305] and he found [4672] a ship [0591] going to [0935] Tarshish: [8659] so he paid [5414] the fare [7939] thereof, and went down [3381] into it, to go [0935] with them unto Tarshish [8659] from the presence [6440] of the LORD. [3068]

 Mais YEHOVAH souleva un grand vent sur la mer, et il y eut une grande tempête sur la mer, et le navire était sur le point de se briser.

 But the LORD [3068] sent out [2904] a great [1419] wind [7307] into the sea, [3220] and there was a mighty [1419] tempest [5591] in the sea, [3220] so that the ship [0591] was like [2803] to be broken. [7665]

 Et les marins eurent peur; ils crièrent chacun à leur dieu, et jetèrent à la mer les objets qui étaient dans le navire, pour l'alléger; mais Jonas était descendu au fond du navire, s'était couché et dormait profondément.

 Then the mariners [4419] were afraid, [3372] and cried [2199] every man [0376] unto his god, [0430] and cast forth [2904] the wares [3627] that [were] in the ship [0591] into the sea, [3220] to lighten [7043] [it] of them. But Jonah [3124] was gone down [3381] into the sides [3411] of the ship; [5600] and he lay, [7901] and was fast asleep. [7290]

 Alors le pilote s'approcha de lui, et lui dit: Pourquoi dors-tu? Lève-toi, crie à ton Dieu. Peut-être pensera-t-il à nous, et nous ne périrons pas.

 So the shipmaster [7227] [2259] came [7126] to him, and said [0559] unto him, What meanest thou, O sleeper? [7290] arise, [6965] call [7121] upon thy God, [0430] if so be that God [0430] will think [6245] upon us, that we perish [0006] not.

 Puis ils se dirent l'un à l'autre: Venez, jetons le sort, et nous saurons qui est cause de ce malheur qui nous arrive. Ils jetèrent donc le sort, et le sort tomba sur Jonas.

 And they said [0559] every one [0376] to his fellow, [7453] Come, [3212] and let us cast [5307] lots, [1486] that we may know [3045] for whose cause [7945] this evil [7451] [is] upon us. So they cast [5307] lots, [1486] and the lot [1486] fell [5307] upon Jonah. [3124]

 Alors ils lui dirent: Fais-nous donc savoir pourquoi ce malheur nous arrive. Quelle est ta profession, et d'où viens-tu? Quel est ton pays, et de quel peuple es-tu?

 Then said [0559] they unto him, Tell [5046] us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil [7451] [is] upon us; What [is] thine occupation? [4399] and whence [0370] comest [0935] thou? what [is] thy country? [0776] and of what people [5971] [art] thou?

 Et il leur dit: Je suis Hébreu, et je crains YEHOVAH, le Dieu des cieux, qui a fait la mer et la terre.

 And he said [0559] unto them, I [am] an Hebrew; [5680] and I fear [3373] the LORD, [3068] the God [0430] of heaven, [8064] which hath made [6213] the sea [3220] and the dry [3004] [land].

 Et ces hommes furent saisis d'une grande crainte, et ils lui dirent: Pourquoi as-tu fait cela? Car ces hommes savaient qu'il s'enfuyait de devant la face de YEHOVAH, parce qu'il le leur avait déclaré.

 Then were the men [0582] exceedingly [1419] [3374] afraid, [3372] and said [0559] unto him, Why hast thou done [6213] this? For the men [0582] knew [3045] that he fled [1272] from the presence [6440] of the LORD, [3068] because he had told [5046] them.

 Ils lui dirent donc: Que te ferons-nous, pour que la mer s'apaise envers nous? Car la mer devenait de plus en plus orageuse.

 Then said [0559] they unto him, What shall we do [6213] unto thee, that the sea [3220] may be calm [8367] unto us? for the sea [3220] wrought, [1980] and was tempestuous. [5590]

 Et il leur répondit: Prenez-moi, et jetez-moi dans la mer, et la mer s'apaisera envers vous; car je sais que c'est à cause de moi que cette grande tempête est venue sur vous.

 And he said [0559] unto them, Take me up, [5375] and cast me forth [2904] into the sea; [3220] so shall the sea [3220] be calm [8367] unto you: for I know [3045] that for my sake [7945] this great [1419] tempest [5591] [is] upon you.

 Et ces hommes ramaient pour gagner la terre, mais ils ne le purent, parce que la mer s'agitait de plus en plus contre eux.

 Nevertheless the men [0582] rowed [2864] hard to bring [7725] [it] to the land; [3004] but they could [3201] not: for the sea [3220] wrought, [1980] and was tempestuous [5590] against them.

 Alors ils crièrent à YEHOVAH, et dirent: Ô YEHOVAH! que nous ne périssions pas à cause de la vie de cet homme, et ne mets point sur nous le sang innocent! Car toi, ô YEHOVAH, tu fais comme il te plaît

 Wherefore they cried [7121] unto the LORD, [3068] and said, [0559] We beseech [0577] thee, O LORD, [3068] we beseech thee, let us not perish [0006] for this man's [0376] life, [5315] and lay [5414] not upon us innocent [5355] blood: [1818] for thou, O LORD, [3068] hast done [6213] as it pleased [2654] thee.

 Puis ils prirent Jonas, et le jetèrent dans la mer, et la fureur de la mer s'arrêta.

 So they took up [5375] Jonah, [3124] and cast him forth [2904] into the sea: [3220] and the sea [3220] ceased [5975] from her raging. [2197]

 Et ces hommes furent saisis d'une grande crainte de YEHOVAH. Ils offrirent des sacrifices à YEHOVAH, et firent des vœux.

 Then the men [0582] feared [3372] the LORD [3068] exceedingly, [1419] [3374] and offered [2076] a sacrifice [2077] unto the LORD, [3068] and made [5087] vows. [5088]

 (2-1) Et YEHOVAH prépara un grand poisson pour engloutir Jonas, et Jonas fut dans le ventre du poisson trois jours et trois nuits.

 Now the LORD [3068] had prepared [4487] a great [1419] fish [1709] to swallow up [1104] Jonah. [3124] And Jonah [3124] was in the belly [4578] of the fish [1709] three [7969] days [3117] and three [7969] nights. [3915]

 (2-2) Or, Jonas fit sa prière à YEHOVAH son Dieu, dans le ventre du poisson.

 Then Jonah [3124] prayed [6419] unto the LORD [3068] his God [0430] out of the fish's [1710] belly, [4578]

 (2-3) Et il dit: Dans ma détresse j'ai invoqué YEHOVAH, et il m'a répondu; du sein du Sépulcre j'ai crié, et tu as entendu ma voix.

 And said, [0559] I cried [7121] by reason of mine affliction [6869] unto the LORD, [3068] and he heard [6030] me; out of the belly [0990] of hell [7585] cried [7768] I, [and] thou heardest [8085] my voice. [6963]

 (2-4) Tu m'as jeté dans l'abîme, au cœur de la mer, et le courant m'a environné. Toutes tes vagues et tous tes flots ont passé sur moi.

 For thou hadst cast [7993] me into the deep, [4688] in the midst [3824] of the seas; [3220] and the floods [5104] compassed me about: [5437] all thy billows [4867] and thy waves [1530] passed [5674] over me.

 (2-5) Et moi je disais: Je suis rejeté de devant tes yeux! Cependant je verrai encore le temple de ta sainteté!

 Then I said, [0559] I am cast out [1644] of thy sight; [5869] yet I will look [5027] again [3254] toward thy holy [6944] temple. [1964]

 (2-6) Les eaux m'ont environné jusqu'à l'âme; l'abîme m'a enveloppé; les roseaux ont entouré ma tête.

 The waters [4325] compassed [0661] me about, [even] to the soul: [5315] the depth [8415] closed me round about, [5437] the weeds [5488] were wrapped about [2280] my head. [7218]

 (2-7) J'étais descendu jusqu'aux racines des montagnes; la terre avait fermé sur moi ses barres pour toujours. Mais tu as fait remonter ma vie hors de la corruption, YEHOVAH, mon Dieu!

 I went down [3381] to the bottoms [7095] of the mountains; [2022] the earth [0776] with her bars [1280] [was] about me for ever: [5769] yet hast thou brought up [5927] my life [2416] from corruption, [7845] O LORD [3068] my God. [0430]

 (2-8) Quand mon âme défaillait en moi, je me suis souvenu de YEHOVAH, et ma prière est parvenue jusqu'à toi, dans le temple de ta sainteté.

 When my soul [5315] fainted [5848] within me I remembered [2142] the LORD: [3068] and my prayer [8605] came in [0935] unto thee, into thine holy [6944] temple. [1964]

 (2-9) Ceux qui s'attachent à des vanités trompeuses abandonnent celui qui leur fait miséricorde;

 They that observe [8104] lying [7723] vanities [1892] forsake [5800] their own mercy. [2617]

 (2-10) Mais moi, je t'offrirai des sacrifices avec chant de louange, j'accomplirai les vœux que j'ai faits. LE SALUT EST DE YEHOVAH!

 But I will sacrifice [2076] unto thee with the voice [6963] of thanksgiving; [8426] I will pay [7999] [that] that I have vowed. [5087] Salvation [3444] [is] of the LORD. [3068]

 (2-11) Alors YEHOVAH commanda au poisson, et le poisson vomit Jonas sur la terre.

 And the LORD [3068] spake [0559] unto the fish, [1709] and it vomited out [6958] Jonah [3124] upon the dry [3004] [land].

 Puis la Parole de YEHOVAH fut adressée à Jonas une seconde fois, en ces mots:

 And the word [1697] of the LORD [3068] came unto Jonah [3124] the second [8145] time, saying, [0559]

 Lève-toi, va à Ninive, la grande ville, et publies-y le message que je t'ordonne.

 Arise, [6965] go [3212] unto Nineveh, [5210] that great [1419] city, [5892] and preach [7121] unto it the preaching [7150] that I bid [1696] thee.

 Jonas se leva donc et alla à Ninive, suivant l'ordre de YEHOVAH. Or Ninive était une grande ville devant Dieu, de trois journées de marche.

 So Jonah [3124] arose, [6965] and went [3212] unto Nineveh, [5210] according to the word [1697] of the LORD. [3068] Now Nineveh [5210] was an exceeding [0430] great [1419] city [5892] of three [7969] days' [3117] journey. [4109]

 Et Jonas commença de pénétrer dans la ville le chemin d'une journée; il criait et disait: Encore quarante jours, et Ninive sera détruite!

 And Jonah [3124] began [2490] to enter [0935] into the city [5892] a [0259] day's [3117] journey, [4109] and he cried, [7121] and said, [0559] Yet forty [0705] days, [3117] and Nineveh [5210] shall be overthrown. [2015]

 Et les gens de Ninive crurent à Dieu; ils publièrent un jeûne et se revêtirent de sacs, depuis les plus grands d'entre eux jusqu'aux plus petits.

 So the people [0582] of Nineveh [5210] believed [0539] God, [0430] and proclaimed [7121] a fast, [6685] and put on [3847] sackcloth, [8242] from the greatest [1419] of them even to the least [6996] of them.

 La chose parvint au roi de Ninive; il se leva de son trône, ôta de dessus lui son manteau, se couvrit d'un sac, et s'assit sur la cendre.

 For word [1697] came [5060] unto the king [4428] of Nineveh, [5210] and he arose [6965] from his throne, [3678] and he laid [5674] his robe [0155] from him, and covered [3680] [him] with sackcloth, [8242] and sat [3427] in ashes. [0665]

 Puis il fit proclamer et dire dans Ninive, par décret du roi et de ses grands: "Que les hommes et les bêtes, le gros et le menu bétail, ne goûtent de rien; qu'ils ne paissent point, et ne boivent point d'eau.

 And he caused [it] to be proclaimed [2199] and published [0559] through Nineveh [5210] by the decree [2940] of the king [4428] and his nobles, [1419] saying, [0559] Let neither man [0120] nor beast, [0929] herd [1241] nor flock, [6629] taste [2938] any thing: [3972] let them not feed, [7462] nor drink [8354] water: [4325]

 Que les hommes et les bêtes soient couverts de sacs; et qu'ils crient à Dieu avec force, et que chacun se détourne de sa mauvaise voie et de l'iniquité qui est dans ses mains.

 But let man [0120] and beast [0929] be covered [3680] with sackcloth, [8242] and cry [7121] mightily [2393] unto God: [0430] yea, let them turn [7725] every one [0376] from his evil [7451] way, [1870] and from the violence [2555] that [is] in their hands. [3709]

 Qui sait si Dieu ne reviendra pas, et ne se repentira pas; et s'il ne reviendra pas de l'ardeur de sa colère, en sorte que nous ne périssions point?

 Who can tell [3045] [if] God [0430] will turn [7725] and repent, [5162] and turn away [7725] from his fierce [2740] anger, [0639] that we perish [0006] not?

 Or Dieu vit ce qu'ils faisaient, comment ils se détournaient de leur mauvaise voie; et Dieu se repentit du mal qu'il avait parlé de leur faire, et il ne le fit point.

 And God [0430] saw [7200] their works, [4639] that they turned [7725] from their evil [7451] way; [1870] and God [0430] repented [5162] of the evil, [7451] that he had said [1696] that he would do [6213] unto them; and he did [6213] [it] not.

 Mais cela déplut extrêmement à Jonas, et il en fut irrité.

 But it displeased [3415] Jonah [3124] exceedingly, [1419] [7451] and he was very angry. [2734]

 Et il fit sa requête à YEHOVAH, et dit: Ah! YEHOVAH, n'est-ce pas là ce que je disais quand j'étais encore dans mon pays? C'est pourquoi je voulais prévenir cela en m'enfuyant à Tarsis. Car je savais que tu es un Dieu miséricordieux, compatissant, lent à la colère et abondant en grâce, et qui te repens du mal.

 And he prayed [6419] unto the LORD, [3068] and said, [0559] I pray thee, [0577] O LORD, [3068] [was] not this my saying, [1697] when I was yet in my country? [0127] Therefore I fled [1272] before [6923] unto Tarshish: [8659] for I knew [3045] that thou [art] a gracious [2587] God, [0410] and merciful, [7349] slow [0750] to anger, [0639] and of great [7227] kindness, [2617] and repentest [5162] thee of the evil. [7451]

 Maintenant, YEHOVAH, prends donc ma vie; car mieux me vaut la mort que la vie!

 Therefore now, O LORD, [3068] take, [3947] I beseech thee, my life [5315] from me; for [it is] better [2896] for me to die [4194] than to live. [2416]

 Et YEHOVAH lui dit: Fais-tu bien de t'irriter?

 Then said [0559] the LORD, [3068] Doest thou well [3190] to be angry? [2734]

 Alors Jonas sortit de la ville, et s'assit à l'orient de la ville; il s'y fit une cabane et s'y tint à l'ombre, jusqu'à ce qu'il vit ce qui arriverait à la ville.

 So Jonah [3124] went out [3318] of the city, [5892] and sat [3427] on the east side [6924] of the city, [5892] and there made [6213] him a booth, [5521] and sat [3427] under it in the shadow, [6738] till he might see [7200] what would become of the city. [5892]

 Et YEHOVAH fit croître un ricin, qui s'éleva au-dessus de Jonas, pour donner de l'ombre sur sa tête et le délivrer de son chagrin. Et Jonas éprouva une grande joie à cause de ce ricin.

 And the LORD [3068] God [0430] prepared [4487] a gourd, [7021] and made [it] to come up [5927] over Jonah, [3124] that it might be a shadow [6738] over his head, [7218] to deliver [5337] him from his grief. [7451] So Jonah [3124] was exceeding [1419] [8057] glad [8055] of the gourd. [7021]

 Mais Dieu fit venir le lendemain, au lever de l'aurore, un ver qui attaqua le ricin, en sorte qu'il sécha.

 But God [0430] prepared [4487] a worm [8438] when the morning [7837] rose [5927] the next day, [4283] and it smote [5221] the gourd [7021] that it withered. [3001]

 Puis il arriva qu'au lever du soleil Dieu fit venir un vent chaud d'orient, et le soleil frappa sur la tête de Jonas, en sorte qu'il tomba en défaillance. Et il demanda la mort, et dit: Mieux me vaut la mort que la vie!

 And it came to pass, when the sun [8121] did arise, [2224] that God [0430] prepared [4487] a vehement [2759] east [6921] wind; [7307] and the sun [8121] beat [5221] upon the head [7218] of Jonah, [3124] that he fainted, [5968] and wished [7592] in himself [5315] to die, [4191] and said, [0559] [It is] better [2896] for me to die [4194] than to live. [2416]

 Mais Dieu dit à Jonas: Fais-tu bien de t'irriter à cause de ce ricin? Et il répondit: J'ai raison de m'irriter jusqu'à la mort.

 And God [0430] said [0559] to Jonah, [3124] Doest thou well [3190] to be angry [2734] for the gourd? [7021] And he said, [0559] I do well [3190] to be angry, [2734] [even] unto death. [4194]

 Alors YEHOVAH dit: Tu as pitié d'un ricin, pour lequel tu n'as pris aucune peine, et que tu n'as point fait croître, qui est né dans une nuit, et dans une nuit a péri;

 Then said [0559] the LORD, [3068] Thou hast had pity [2347] on the gourd, [7021] for the which thou hast not laboured, [5998] neither madest it grow; [1431] which came up in a night, [1121] [3915] and perished [0006] in a night: [1121] [3915]

 Et moi je n'aurais pas pitié de Ninive, la grande ville, dans laquelle il y a plus de cent vingt mille personnes qui ne savent pas distinguer leur droite de leur gauche, et du bétail en grand nombre!

 And should not I spare [2347] Nineveh, [5210] that great [1419] city, [5892] wherein are [3426] more [7235] than sixscore [8147] [6240] thousand [7239] persons [0120] that cannot discern [3045] between their right hand [3225] and their left hand; [8040] and [also] much [7227] cattle? [0929]
