Chapître 13

1

When Ephraim spake¹⁵ trembling, he exalted¹ himself in Israel; but when he offended⁴ in Baal, he died.⁴

2

And now they sin² more and more,⁵⁵ and have made⁴ them molten images of their silver, [and] idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say⁶ of them, Let the men that sacrifice⁶ kiss⁴ the calves.

Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the early⁵⁶ dew that passeth away,⁶ as the chaff [that] is driven with the whirlwind²⁹ out of the floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.

Yet I [am] the LORD thy God from the land of Egypt, and thou shalt know⁴ no god but me: for [there is] no saviour⁵⁶ beside me.

I did know¹ thee in the wilderness, in the land of great drought.

According to their pasture, so were they filled;⁴ they were filled,¹ and their heart was exalted;⁴ therefore have they forgotten¹ me.

Therefore I will be unto them as a lion: as a leopard by the way will I observe⁴ [them]:

8

I will meet⁴ them as a bear [that is] bereaved [of her whelps], and will rend⁴ the caul of their heart, and there will I devour⁴ them like a lion: the wild beast shall tear¹⁷ them.

9

O Israel, thou hast destroyed¹⁴ thyself; but in me [is] thine help.

10

I will be thy king: where [is any other] that may save⁵⁵ thee in all thy cities? and thy judges⁶ of whom thou saidst,¹ Give³ me a king and princes?

11

I gave⁴ thee a king in mine anger, and took [him] away⁴ in my wrath.

12

The iniquity of Ephraim [is] bound up;⁷ his sin [is] hid.⁷

13

The sorrows of a travailing woman⁶ shall come⁴ upon him: he [is] an unwise son; for he should not stay⁴ long in [the place of] the breaking forth of children.

14

I will ransom⁴ them from the power of the grave; I will redeem⁴ them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction: repentance shall be hid¹¹ from mine eyes.

15

Though he be fruitful⁵⁵ among [his] brethren, an east wind shall come,⁴ the wind of the LORD shall come up⁶ from the wilderness, and his spring shall become dry,⁴ and his fountain shall be dried up:⁴ he shall spoil⁴ the treasure of all pleasant vessels.

16

 Samaria shall become desolate;⁴ for she hath rebelled¹ against her God: they shall fall⁴ by the sword: their infants shall be dashed in pieces,²⁹ and their women with child shall be ripped up.²⁹
