1  And the ark⁷²⁷ of the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ was¹⁹⁶¹ in the country⁷⁷⁰⁴ of the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ seven⁷⁶⁵¹ months.²³²⁰

2  And the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ called⁷¹²¹ for the priests³⁵⁴⁸ and the diviners,⁷⁰⁸⁰ saying,⁵⁵⁹ What⁴¹⁰⁰ shall we do⁶²¹³ to the ark⁷²⁷ of the LORD?³⁰⁶⁸ tell³⁰⁴⁵ us wherewith⁴¹⁰⁰ we shall send⁷⁹⁷¹ it to his place.⁴⁷²⁵

3  And they said,⁵⁵⁹ If⁵¹⁸ ye send away^{7971 853} the ark⁷²⁷ of the God⁴³⁰ of Israel,³⁴⁷⁸ send⁷⁹⁷¹ it not⁴⁰⁸ empty;⁷³⁸⁷ but³⁵⁸⁸ in any wise return^{7725 7725} him a trespass offering:⁸¹⁷ then²²⁷ ye shall be healed,⁷⁴⁹⁵ and it shall be known³⁰⁴⁵ to you why⁴¹⁰⁰ his hand³⁰²⁷ is not³⁸⁰⁸ removed⁵⁴⁹³ from⁴⁴⁸⁰ you.

4  Then said⁵⁵⁹ they, What⁴¹⁰⁰ shall be the trespass offering⁸¹⁷ which⁸³⁴ we shall return⁷⁷²⁵ to him? They answered,⁵⁵⁹ Five²⁵⁶⁸ golden²⁰⁹¹ emerods,⁶⁰⁷⁶ and five²⁵⁶⁸ golden²⁰⁹¹ mice,⁵⁹⁰⁹ according to the number⁴⁵⁵⁷ of the lords⁵⁶³³ of the Philistines:⁶⁴³⁰ for³⁵⁸⁸ one²⁵⁹ plague⁴⁰⁴⁶ was on you all,³⁶⁰⁵ and on your lords.⁵⁶³³

5  Wherefore ye shall make⁶²¹³ images⁶⁷⁵⁴ of your emerods,⁶⁰⁷⁶ and images⁶⁷⁵⁴ of your mice⁵⁹⁰⁹ that mar^{7843 853} the land;⁷⁷⁶ and ye shall give⁵⁴¹⁴ glory³⁵¹⁹ unto the God⁴³⁰ of Israel:³⁴⁷⁸ peradventure¹⁹⁴ he will lighten^{7043 853} his hand³⁰²⁷ from off^{4480 5921} you, and from off^{4480 5921} your gods,⁴³⁰ and from off^{4480 5921} your land.⁷⁷⁶

6  Wherefore⁴¹⁰⁰ then do ye harden^{3513 853} your hearts,³⁸²⁴ as⁸³⁴ the Egyptians⁴⁷¹⁴ and Pharaoh⁶⁵⁴⁷ hardened^{3513 853} their hearts?³⁸²⁰ when⁸³⁴ he had wrought wonderfully⁵⁹⁵³ among them, did they not³⁸⁰⁸ let the people go,⁷⁹⁷¹ and they departed?¹⁹⁸⁰

7  Now⁶²⁵⁸ therefore make⁶²¹³ a²⁵⁹ new²³¹⁹ cart,⁵⁶⁹⁹ and take³⁹⁴⁷ two⁸¹⁴⁷ milch⁵⁷⁶³ kine,⁶⁵¹⁰ on⁵⁹²¹ which⁸³⁴ there hath come⁵⁹²⁷ no³⁸⁰⁸ yoke,⁵⁹²³ and tie^{631 853} the kine⁶⁵¹⁰ to the cart,⁵⁶⁹⁹ and bring⁷⁷²⁵ their calves¹¹²¹ home¹⁰⁰⁴ from^{4480 310} them:

8  And take^{3947 853} the ark⁷²⁷ of the LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ and lay⁵⁴¹⁴ it upon⁴¹³ the cart;⁵⁶⁹⁹ and put⁷⁷⁶⁰ the jewels³⁶²⁷ of gold,²⁰⁹¹ which⁸³⁴ ye return⁷⁷²⁵ him for a trespass offering,⁸¹⁷ in a coffer⁷¹² by the side^{4480 6654} thereof; and send it away,^{7971 853} that it may go.¹⁹⁸⁰

9  And see,⁷²⁰⁰ if⁵¹⁸ it goeth up⁵⁹²⁷ by the way¹⁸⁷⁰ of his own coast¹³⁶⁶ to Beth-shemesh,¹⁰⁵³ then he¹⁹³¹ hath done⁶²¹³ us ⁸⁵³ this²⁰⁶³ great¹⁴¹⁹ evil:⁷⁴⁵¹ but if⁵¹⁸ not,³⁸⁰⁸ then we shall know³⁰⁴⁵ that³⁵⁸⁸ it is not³⁸⁰⁸ his hand³⁰²⁷ that smote⁵⁰⁶⁰ us: it¹⁹³¹ was a chance⁴⁷⁴⁵ that happened¹⁹⁶¹ to us.

10  And the men³⁷⁶ did⁶²¹³ so;³⁶⁵¹ and took³⁹⁴⁷ two⁸¹⁴⁷ milch⁵⁷⁶³ kine,⁶⁵¹⁰ and tied⁶³¹ them to the cart,⁵⁶⁹⁹ and shut up³⁶⁰⁷ their calves¹¹²¹ at home:¹⁰⁰⁴

11  And they laid^{7760 853} the ark⁷²⁷ of the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ upon⁴¹³ the cart,⁵⁶⁹⁹ and the coffer⁷¹² with⁸⁵⁴ the mice⁵⁹⁰⁹ of gold²⁰⁹¹ and the images⁶⁷⁵⁴ of their emerods.²⁹¹⁴

12  And the kine⁶⁵¹⁰ took the straight³⁴⁷⁴ way¹⁸⁷⁰ to⁵⁹²¹ the way¹⁸⁷⁰ of Beth-shemesh,¹⁰⁵³ and went along¹⁹⁸⁰ the²⁵⁹ highway,⁴⁵⁴⁶ lowing¹⁶⁰⁰ as they went,¹⁹⁸⁰ and turned not aside^{5493 3808} to the right hand³²²⁵ or to the left;⁸⁰⁴⁰ and the lords⁵⁶³³ of the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ went¹⁹⁸⁰ after³¹⁰ them unto⁵⁷⁰⁴ the border¹³⁶⁶ of Beth-shemesh.¹⁰⁵³

13  And they of Beth-shemesh¹⁰⁵³ were reaping⁷¹¹⁴ their wheat²⁴⁰⁶ harvest⁷¹⁰⁵ in the valley:⁶⁰¹⁰ and they lifted up^{5375 853} their eyes,⁵⁸⁶⁹ and saw^{7200 853} the ark,⁷²⁷ and rejoiced⁸⁰⁵⁵ to see⁷²⁰⁰ it.

14  And the cart⁵⁶⁹⁹ came⁹³⁵ into⁴¹³ the field⁷⁷⁰⁴ of Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ a Beth-shemite,¹⁰³⁰ and stood⁵⁹⁷⁵ there,⁸⁰³³ where⁸⁰³³ there was a great¹⁴¹⁹ stone:⁶⁸ and they cleaved^{1234 853} the wood⁶⁰⁸⁶ of the cart,⁵⁶⁹⁹ and offered⁵⁹²⁷ the kine⁶⁵¹⁰ a burnt offering⁵⁹³⁰ unto the LORD.³⁰⁶⁸

15  And the Levites³⁸⁸¹ took down^{3381 853} the ark⁷²⁷ of the LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ and the coffer⁷¹² that⁸³⁴ was with⁸⁵⁴ it, wherein⁸³⁴ the jewels³⁶²⁷ of gold²⁰⁹¹ were, and put⁷⁷⁶⁰ them on⁴¹³ the great¹⁴¹⁹ stone:⁶⁸ and the men³⁷⁶ of Beth-shemesh¹⁰⁵³ offered⁵⁹²⁷ burnt offerings⁵⁹³⁰ and sacrificed²⁰⁷⁶ sacrifices²⁰⁷⁷ the same¹⁹³¹ day³¹¹⁷ unto the LORD.³⁰⁶⁸

16  And when the five²⁵⁶⁸ lords⁵⁶³³ of the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ had seen⁷²⁰⁰ it, they returned⁷⁷²⁵ to Ekron⁶¹³⁸ the same¹⁹³¹ day.³¹¹⁷

17  And these⁴²⁸ are the golden²⁰⁹¹ emerods²⁹¹⁴ which⁸³⁴ the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ returned⁷⁷²⁵ for a trespass offering⁸¹⁷ unto the LORD;³⁰⁶⁸ for Ashdod⁷⁹⁵ one,²⁵⁹ for Gaza⁵⁸⁰⁴ one,²⁵⁹ for Askelon⁸³¹ one,²⁵⁹ for Gath¹⁶⁶¹ one,²⁵⁹ for Ekron⁶¹³⁸ one;²⁵⁹

18  And the golden²⁰⁹¹ mice,⁵⁹⁰⁹ according to the number⁴⁵⁵⁷ of all³⁶⁰⁵ the cities⁵⁸⁹² of the Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ belonging to the five²⁵⁶⁸ lords,⁵⁶³³ both of fenced cities,^{4480 5892 4013} and of⁵⁷⁰⁴ country⁶⁵²¹ villages,³⁷²⁴ even unto⁵⁷⁰⁴ the great¹⁴¹⁹ stone of Abel,⁵⁹ whereon^{834 5921} they set down^{5117 853} the ark⁷²⁷ of the LORD:³⁰⁶⁸ which stone remaineth unto⁵⁷⁰⁴ this²⁰⁸⁸ day³¹¹⁷ in the field⁷⁷⁰⁴ of Joshua,³⁰⁹¹ the Beth-shemite.¹⁰³⁰

19  And he smote⁵²²¹ the men³⁷⁶ of Beth-shemesh,¹⁰⁵³ because³⁵⁸⁸ they had looked⁷²⁰⁰ into the ark⁷²⁷ of the LORD,³⁰⁶⁸ even he smote⁵²²¹ of the people⁵⁹⁷¹ fifty²⁵⁷² thousand⁵⁰⁵ and threescore and ten⁷⁶⁵⁷ men:³⁷⁶ and the people⁵⁹⁷¹ lamented,⁵⁶ because³⁵⁸⁸ the LORD³⁰⁶⁸ had smitten⁵²²¹ many of the people⁵⁹⁷¹ with a great¹⁴¹⁹ slaughter.⁴³⁴⁷

20  And the men³⁷⁶ of Beth-shemesh¹⁰⁵³ said,⁵⁵⁹ Who⁴³¹⁰ is able³²⁰¹ to stand⁵⁹⁷⁵ before⁶⁴⁴⁰ this²⁰⁸⁸ holy⁶⁹¹⁸ LORD³⁰⁶⁸ God?⁴³⁰ and to⁴¹³ whom⁴³¹⁰ shall he go up⁵⁹²⁷ from^{4480 5921} us?

21  And they sent⁷⁹⁷¹ messengers⁴³⁹⁷ to⁴¹³ the inhabitants³⁴²⁷ of Kirjath-jearim,⁷¹⁵⁷ saying,⁵⁵⁹ The Philistines⁶⁴³⁰ have brought again^{7725 853} the ark⁷²⁷ of the LORD;³⁰⁶⁸ come ye down,³³⁸¹ and fetch it up^{5927 853} to⁴¹³ you.

1 καὶ ἦν ἡ κιβωτὸς ἐν ἀγρῷ τῶν ἀλλοφύλων ἑπτὰ μῆνας καὶ ἐξέζεσεν ἡ γῆ αὐτῶν μύας

2 καὶ καλοῦσιν ἀλλόφυλοι τοὺς ἱερεῖς καὶ τοὺς μάντεις καὶ τοὺς ἐπαοιδοὺς αὐτῶν λέγοντες τί ποιήσωμεν τῇ κιβωτῷ κυρίου γνωρίσατε ἡμῖν ἐν τίνι ἀποστελοῦμεν αὐτὴν εἰς τὸν τόπον αὐτῆς

3 καὶ εἶπαν εἰ ἐξαπεστέλλετε ὑμεῖς τὴν κιβωτὸν διαθήκης κυρίου θεοῦ Ισραηλ μὴ δὴ ἐξαποστείλητε αὐτὴν κενήν ἀλλὰ ἀποδιδόντες ἀπόδοτε αὐτῇ τῆς βασάνου καὶ τότε ἰαθήσεσθε καὶ ἐξιλασθήσεται ὑμῖν μὴ οὐκ ἀποστῇ ἡ χεὶρ αὐτοῦ ἀφ᾽ ὑμῶν

4 καὶ λέγουσιν τί τὸ τῆς βασάνου ἀποδώσομεν αὐτῇ καὶ εἶπαν κατ᾽ ἀριθμὸν τῶν σατραπῶν τῶν ἀλλοφύλων πέντε ἕδρας χρυσᾶς ὅτι πταῖσμα ἓν ὑμῖν καὶ τοῖς ἄρχουσιν ὑμῶν καὶ τῷ λαῷ

5 καὶ μῦς χρυσοῦς ὁμοίωμα τῶν μυῶν ὑμῶν τῶν διαφθειρόντων τὴν γῆν καὶ δώσετε τῷ κυρίῳ δόξαν ὅπως κουφίσῃ τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ ἀφ᾽ ὑμῶν καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν θεῶν ὑμῶν καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ὑμῶν

6 καὶ ἵνα τί βαρύνετε τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν ὡς ἐβάρυνεν Αἴγυπτος καὶ Φαραω τὴν καρδίαν αὐτῶν οὐχὶ ὅτε ἐνέπαιξεν αὐτοῖς ἐξαπέστειλαν αὐτούς καὶ ἀπῆλθον

7 καὶ νῦν λάβετε καὶ ποιήσατε ἅμαξαν καινὴν καὶ δύο βόας πρωτοτοκούσας ἄνευ τῶν τέκνων καὶ ζεύξατε τὰς βόας ἐν τῇ ἁμάξῃ καὶ ἀπαγάγετε τὰ τέκνα ἀπὸ ὄπισθεν αὐτῶν εἰς οἶκον

8 καὶ λήμψεσθε τὴν κιβωτὸν καὶ θήσετε αὐτὴν ἐπὶ τὴν ἅμαξαν καὶ τὰ σκεύη τὰ χρυσᾶ ἀποδώσετε αὐτῇ τῆς βασάνου καὶ θήσετε ἐν θέματι βερσεχθαν ἐκ μέρους αὐτῆς καὶ ἐξαποστελεῖτε αὐτὴν καὶ ἀπελάσατε αὐτήν καὶ ἀπελεύσεται

9 καὶ ὄψεσθε εἰ εἰς ὁδὸν ὁρίων αὐτῆς πορεύσεται κατὰ Βαιθσαμυς αὐτὸς πεποίηκεν ἡμῖν τὴν κακίαν ταύτην τὴν μεγάλην καὶ ἐὰν μή καὶ γνωσόμεθα ὅτι οὐ χεὶρ αὐτοῦ ἧπται ἡμῶν ἀλλὰ σύμπτωμα τοῦτο γέγονεν ἡμῖν

10 καὶ ἐποίησαν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι οὕτως καὶ ἔλαβον δύο βόας πρωτοτοκούσας καὶ ἔζευξαν αὐτὰς ἐν τῇ ἁμάξῃ καὶ τὰ τέκνα αὐτῶν ἀπεκώλυσαν εἰς οἶκον

11 καὶ ἔθεντο τὴν κιβωτὸν ἐπὶ τὴν ἅμαξαν καὶ τὸ θέμα εργαβ καὶ τοὺς μῦς τοὺς χρυσοῦς

12 καὶ κατεύθυναν αἱ βόες ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἰς ὁδὸν Βαιθσαμυς ἐν τρίβῳ ἑνὶ ἐπορεύοντο καὶ ἐκοπίων καὶ οὐ μεθίσταντο δεξιὰ οὐδὲ ἀριστερά καὶ οἱ σατράπαι τῶν ἀλλοφύλων ἐπορεύοντο ὀπίσω αὐτῆς ἕως ὁρίων Βαιθσαμυς

13 καὶ οἱ ἐν Βαιθσαμυς ἐθέριζον θερισμὸν πυρῶν ἐν κοιλάδι καὶ ἦραν ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν καὶ εἶδον κιβωτὸν κυρίου καὶ ηὐφράνθησαν εἰς ἀπάντησιν αὐτῆς

14 καὶ ἡ ἅμαξα εἰσῆλθεν εἰς ἀγρὸν Ωσηε τὸν ἐν Βαιθσαμυς καὶ ἔστησαν ἐκεῖ παρ᾽ αὐτῇ λίθον μέγαν καὶ σχίζουσιν τὰ ξύλα τῆς ἁμάξης καὶ τὰς βόας ἀνήνεγκαν εἰς ὁλοκαύτωσιν τῷ κυρίῳ

15 καὶ οἱ Λευῖται ἀνήνεγκαν τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ κυρίου καὶ τὸ θέμα εργαβ μετ᾽ αὐτῆς καὶ τὰ ἐπ᾽ αὐτῆς σκεύη τὰ χρυσᾶ καὶ ἔθεντο ἐπὶ τοῦ λίθου τοῦ μεγάλου καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες Βαιθσαμυς ἀνήνεγκαν ὁλοκαυτώσεις καὶ θυσίας ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ τῷ κυρίῳ

16 καὶ οἱ πέντε σατράπαι τῶν ἀλλοφύλων ἑώρων καὶ ἀνέστρεψαν εἰς Ἀσκαλῶνα τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ

17 καὶ αὗται αἱ ἕδραι αἱ χρυσαῖ ἃς ἀπέδωκαν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι τῆς βασάνου τῷ κυρίῳ τῆς Ἀζώτου μίαν τῆς Γάζης μίαν τῆς Ἀσκαλῶνος μίαν τῆς Γεθ μίαν τῆς Ακκαρων μίαν

18 καὶ μῦς οἱ χρυσοῖ κατ᾽ ἀριθμὸν πασῶν πόλεων τῶν ἀλλοφύλων τῶν πέντε σατραπῶν ἐκ πόλεως ἐστερεωμένης καὶ ἕως κώμης τοῦ Φερεζαίου καὶ ἕως λίθου τοῦ μεγάλου οὗ ἐπέθηκαν ἐπ᾽ αὐτοῦ τὴν κιβωτὸν διαθήκης κυρίου τοῦ ἐν ἀγρῷ Ωσηε τοῦ Βαιθσαμυσίτου

19 καὶ οὐκ ἠσμένισαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ιεχονιου ἐν τοῖς ἀνδράσιν Βαιθσαμυς ὅτι εἶδαν κιβωτὸν κυρίου καὶ ἐπάταξεν ἐν αὐτοῖς ἑβδομήκοντα ἄνδρας καὶ πεντήκοντα χιλιάδας ἀνδρῶν καὶ ἐπένθησεν ὁ λαός ὅτι ἐπάταξεν κύριος ἐν τῷ λαῷ πληγὴν μεγάλην σφόδρα

20 καὶ εἶπαν οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ ἐκ Βαιθσαμυς τίς δυνήσεται διελθεῖν ἐνώπιον κυρίου τοῦ ἁγίου τούτου καὶ πρὸς τίνα ἀναβήσεται κιβωτὸς κυρίου ἀφ᾽ ἡμῶν

21 καὶ ἀποστέλλουσιν ἀγγέλους πρὸς τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Καριαθιαριμ λέγοντες ἀπεστρόφασιν ἀλλόφυλοι τὴν κιβωτὸν κυρίου κατάβητε καὶ ἀναγάγετε αὐτὴν πρὸς ἑαυτούς

‎1 ‏וַיְהִ֧י אֲרוֹן־יְהוָ֛ה בִּשְׂדֵ֥ה פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים שִׁבְעָ֥ה חֳדָשִֽׁים׃

‎2 ‏וַיִּקְרְא֣וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים לַכֹּהֲנִ֤ים וְלַקֹּֽסְמִים֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר מַֽה־נַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה לַאֲר֣וֹן יְהוָ֑ה הוֹדִעֻ֕נוּ בַּמֶּ֖ה נְשַׁלְּחֶ֥נּוּ לִמְקוֹמֽוֹ׃

‎3 ‏וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ אִֽם־מְשַׁלְּחִ֞ים אֶת־אֲר֨וֹן אֱלֹהֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אַל־תְּשַׁלְּח֤וּ אֹתוֹ֙ רֵיקָ֔ם כִּֽי־הָשֵׁ֥ב תָּשִׁ֛יבוּ ל֖וֹ אָשָׁ֑ם אָ֤ז תֵּרָֽפְאוּ֙ וְנוֹדַ֣ע לָכֶ֔ם לָ֛מָּה לֹא־תָס֥וּר יָד֖וֹ מִכֶּֽם׃

‎4 ‏וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ מָ֣ה הָאָשָׁם֮ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נָשִׁ֣יב לוֹ֒ וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ מִסְפַּר֙ סַרְנֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים חֲמִשָּׁה֙ עפלי טְחֹרֵ֣י זָהָ֔ב וַחֲמִשָּׁ֖ה עַכְבְּרֵ֣י זָהָ֑ב כִּֽי־מַגֵּפָ֥ה אַחַ֛ת לְכֻלָּ֖ם וּלְסַרְנֵיכֶֽם׃

‎5 ‏וַעֲשִׂיתֶם֩ צַלְמֵ֨י עפליכם טְחֹרֵיכֶ֜ם וְצַלְמֵ֣י עַכְבְּרֵיכֶ֗ם הַמַּשְׁחִיתִם֙ אֶת־הָאָ֔רֶץ וּנְתַתֶּ֛ם לֵאלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כָּב֑וֹד אוּלַ֗י יָקֵ֤ל אֶת־יָדוֹ֙ מֵֽעֲלֵיכֶ֔ם וּמֵעַ֥ל אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֖ם וּמֵעַ֥ל אַרְצְכֶֽם׃

‎6 ‏וְלָ֤מָּה תְכַבְּדוּ֙ אֶת־לְבַבְכֶ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֧ר כִּבְּד֛וּ מִצְרַ֥יִם וּפַרְעֹ֖ה אֶת־לִבָּ֑ם הֲלוֹא֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר הִתְעַלֵּ֣ל בָּהֶ֔ם וַֽיְשַׁלְּח֖וּם וַיֵּלֵֽכוּ׃

‎7 ‏וְעַתָּ֗ה קְח֨וּ וַעֲשׂ֜וּ עֲגָלָ֤ה חֲדָשָׁה֙ אֶחָ֔ת וּשְׁתֵּ֤י פָרוֹת֙ עָל֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־עָלָ֥ה עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם עֹ֑ל וַאֲסַרְתֶּ֤ם אֶת־הַפָּרוֹת֙ בָּעֲגָלָ֔ה וַהֲשֵׁיבֹתֶ֧ם בְּנֵיהֶ֛ם מֵאַחֲרֵיהֶ֖ם הַבָּֽיְתָה׃

‎8 ‏וּלְקַחְתֶּ֞ם אֶת־אֲר֣וֹן יְהוָ֗ה וּנְתַתֶּ֤ם אֹתוֹ֙ אֶל־הָ֣עֲגָלָ֔ה וְאֵ֣ת׀ כְּלֵ֣י הַזָּהָ֗ב אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֲשֵׁבֹתֶ֥ם לוֹ֙ אָשָׁ֔ם תָּשִׂ֥ימוּ בָאַרְגַּ֖ז מִצִּדּ֑וֹ וְשִׁלַּחְתֶּ֥ם אֹת֖וֹ וְהָלָֽךְ׃

‎9 ‏וּרְאִיתֶ֗ם אִם־דֶּ֨רֶךְ גְּבוּל֤וֹ יַֽעֲלֶה֙ בֵּ֣ית שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ ה֚וּא עָ֣שָׂה לָ֔נוּ אֶת־הָרָעָ֥ה הַגְּדוֹלָ֖ה הַזֹּ֑את וְאִם־לֹ֗א וְיָדַ֙עְנוּ֙ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יָדוֹ֙ נָ֣גְעָה בָּ֔נוּ מִקְרֶ֥ה ה֖וּא הָ֥יָה לָֽנוּ׃

‎10 ‏וַיַּעֲשׂ֤וּ הָאֲנָשִׁים֙ כֵּ֔ן וַיִּקְח֗וּ שְׁתֵּ֤י פָרוֹת֙ עָל֔וֹת וַיַּאַסְר֖וּם בָּעֲגָלָ֑ה וְאֶת־בְּנֵיהֶ֖ם כָּל֥וּ בַבָּֽיִת׃

‎11 ‏וַיָּשִׂ֛מוּ אֶת־אֲר֥וֹן יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־הָעֲגָלָ֑ה וְאֵ֣ת הָאַרְגַּ֗ז וְאֵת֙ עַכְבְּרֵ֣י הַזָּהָ֔ב וְאֵ֖ת צַלְמֵ֥י טְחֹרֵיהֶֽם׃

‎12 ‏וַיִשַּׁ֨רְנָה¹ הַפָּר֜וֹת בַּדֶּ֗רֶךְ עַל־דֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ בֵּ֣ית שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ בִּמְסִלָּ֣ה אַחַ֗ת הָלְכ֤וּ הָלֹךְ֙ וְגָע֔וֹ וְלֹא־סָ֖רוּ יָמִ֣ין וּשְׂמֹ֑אול וְסַרְנֵ֤י פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ הֹלְכִ֣ים אַחֲרֵיהֶ֔ם עַד־גְּב֖וּל בֵּ֥ית שָֽׁמֶשׁ׃

‎13 ‏וּבֵ֣ית שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ קֹצְרִ֥ים קְצִיר־חִטִּ֖ים בָּעֵ֑מֶק וַיִּשְׂא֣וּ אֶת־עֵינֵיהֶ֗ם וַיִּרְאוּ֙ אֶת־הָ֣אָר֔וֹן וַֽיִּשְׂמְח֖וּ לִרְאֽוֹת׃

‎14 ‏וְהָעֲגָלָ֡ה בָּ֠אָה אֶל־שְׂדֵ֨ה יְהוֹשֻׁ֤עַ בֵּֽית־הַשִּׁמְשִׁי֙ וַתַּעֲמֹ֣ד שָׁ֔ם וְשָׁ֖ם אֶ֣בֶן גְּדוֹלָ֑ה וַֽיְבַקְּעוּ֙ אֶת־עֲצֵ֣י הָעֲגָלָ֔ה וְאֶת־הַ֨פָּר֔וֹת הֶעֱל֥וּ עֹלָ֖ה לַיהוָֽה׃ ס

‎15 ‏וְהַלְוִיִּ֞ם הוֹרִ֣ידוּ׀ אֶת־אֲר֣וֹן יְהוָ֗ה וְאֶת־הָאַרְגַּ֤ז אֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹ֙ אֲשֶׁר־בּ֣וֹ כְלֵֽי־זָהָ֔ב וַיָּשִׂ֖מוּ אֶל־הָאֶ֣בֶן הַגְּדוֹלָ֑ה וְאַנְשֵׁ֣י בֵֽית־שֶׁ֗מֶשׁ הֶעֱל֨וּ עֹל֜וֹת וַֽיִּזְבְּח֧וּ זְבָחִ֛ים בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא לַֽיהוָֽה׃

‎16 ‏וַחֲמִשָּׁ֥ה סַרְנֵֽי־פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים רָא֑וּ וַיָּשֻׁ֥בוּ עֶקְר֖וֹן בַּיּ֥וֹם הַהֽוּא׃ ס

‎17 ‏וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ טְחֹרֵ֣י הַזָּהָ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֨ר הֵשִׁ֧יבוּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֛ים אָשָׁ֖ם לַֽיהוָ֑ה לְאַשְׁדּ֨וֹד אֶחָ֔ד לְעַזָּ֤ה אֶחָד֙ לְאַשְׁקְל֣וֹן אֶחָ֔ד לְגַ֥ת אֶחָ֖ד לְעֶקְר֥וֹן אֶחָֽד׃ ס

‎18 ‏וְעַכְבְּרֵ֣י הַזָּהָ֗ב מִסְפַּ֞ר כָּל־עָרֵ֤י פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ לַחֲמֵ֣שֶׁת הַסְּרָנִ֔ים מֵעִ֣יר מִבְצָ֔ר וְעַ֖ד כֹּ֣פֶר הַפְּרָזִ֑י וְעַ֣ד׀ אָבֵ֣ל הַגְּדוֹלָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר הִנִּ֤יחוּ עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ אֵ֚ת אֲר֣וֹן יְהוָ֔ה עַ֚ד הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה בִּשְׂדֵ֥ה יְהוֹשֻׁ֖עַ בֵּֽית־הַשִּׁמְשִֽׁי׃

‎19 ‏וַיַּ֞ךְ בְּאַנְשֵׁ֣י בֵֽית־שֶׁ֗מֶשׁ כִּ֤י רָאוּ֙ בַּאֲר֣וֹן יְהוָ֔ה וַיַּ֤ךְ בָּעָם֙ שִׁבְעִ֣ים אִ֔ישׁ חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף אִ֑ישׁ וַיִּֽתְאַבְּל֣וּ הָעָ֔ם כִּֽי־הִכָּ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה בָּעָ֖ם מַכָּ֥ה גְדוֹלָֽה²

‎20 ‏וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ אַנְשֵׁ֣י בֵֽית־שֶׁ֔מֶשׁ מִ֚י יוּכַ֣ל לַעֲמֹ֔ד לִפְנֵ֨י יְהוָ֧ה הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים הַקָּד֖וֹשׁ הַזֶּ֑ה וְאֶל־מִ֖י יַעֲלֶ֥ה מֵעָלֵֽינוּ׃ ס

‎21 ‏וַֽיִּשְׁלְחוּ֙ מַלְאָכִ֔ים אֶל־יוֹשְׁבֵ֥י קִרְיַת־יְעָרִ֖ים לֵאמֹ֑ר הֵשִׁ֤בוּ פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ אֶת־אֲר֣וֹן יְהוָ֔ה רְד֕וּ הַעֲל֥וּ אֹת֖וֹ אֲלֵיכֶֽם׃

Vul

1 Fuit ergo arca Domini in regione Philisthinorum septem mensibus.

2 Et vocaverunt Philisthiim sacerdotes et divinos, dicentes: Quid faciemus de arca Domini? indicate nobis quomodo remittamus eam in locum suum. Qui dixerunt:

3 Si remittitis arcam Dei Israël, nolite dimittere eam vacuam, sed quod debetis, reddite ei pro peccato, et tunc curabimini: et scietis quare non recedat manus ejus a vobis.

4 Qui dixerunt: Quid est quod pro delicto reddere debeamus ei? Responderuntque illi:

5 Juxta numerum provinciarum Philisthinorum quinque anos aureos facietis, et quinque mures aureos: quia plaga una fuit omnibus vobis, et satrapis vestris. Facietisque similitudines anorum vestrorum, et similitudines murium, qui demoliti sunt terram: et dabitis Deo Israël gloriam, si forte relevet manum suam a vobis, et a diis vestris, et a terra vestra.

6 Quare aggravatis corda vestra, sicut aggravavit Ægyptus et Pharao cor suum? nonne postquam percussus est, tunc dimisit eos, et abierunt?

7 Nunc ergo arripite et facite plaustrum novum unum: et duas vaccas fœtas, quibus non est impositum jugum, jungite in plaustro, et recludite vitulos earum domi.

8 Tolletisque arcam Domini, et ponetis in plaustro, et vasa aurea quæ exsolvistis ei pro delicto, ponetis in capsellam ad latus ejus: et dimittite eam ut vadat.

9 Et aspicietis: et si quidem per viam finium suorum ascenderit contra Bethsames, ipse fecit nobis hoc malum grande: sin autem, minime: sciemus quia nequaquam manus ejus tetigit nos, sed casu accidit.

10 Fecerunt ergo illi hoc modo: et tollentes duas vaccas quæ lactabant vitulos, junxerunt ad plaustrum, vitulosque earum concluserunt domi.

11 Et posuerunt arcam Dei super plaustrum, et capsellam quæ habebat mures aureos et similitudines anorum.

12 Ibant autem in directum vaccæ per viam quæ ducit Bethsames, et itinere uno gradiebantur, pergentes et mugientes: et non declinabant neque ad dextram neque ad sinistram: sed et satrapæ Philisthiim sequebantur usque ad terminos Bethsames.

13 Porro Bethsamitæ metebant triticum in valle: et elevantes oculos suos, viderunt arcam, et gavisi sunt cum vidissent.

14 Et plaustrum venit in agrum Josue Bethsamitæ, et stetit ibi. Erat autem ibi lapis magnus, et conciderunt ligna plaustri, vaccasque imposuerunt super ea holocaustum Domino.

15 Levitæ autem deposuerunt arcam Dei, et capsellam quæ erat juxta eam, in qua erant vasa aurea, et posuerunt super lapidem grandem. Viri autem Bethsamitæ obtulerunt holocausta, et immolaverunt victimas in die illa Domino.

16 Et quinque satrapæ Philisthinorum viderunt, et reversi sunt in Accaron in die illa.

17 Hi sunt autem ani aurei quos reddiderunt Philisthiim pro delicto, Domino: Azotus unum, Gaza unum, Ascalon unum, Geth unum, Accaron unum:

18 et mures aureos secundum numerum urbium Philisthiim, quinque provinciarum, ab urbe murata usque ad villam quæ erat absque muro, et usque ad Abelmagnum, super quem posuerunt arcam Domini, quæ erat usque in illum diem in agro Josue Bethsamitis.

19 Percussit autem de viris Bethsamitibus, eo quod vidissent arcam Domini: et percussit de populo septuaginta viros, et quinquaginta millia plebis. Luxitque populus, eo quod Dominus percussisset plebem plaga magna.

20 Et dixerunt viri Bethsamitæ: Quis poterit stare in conspectu Domini Dei sancti hujus? et ad quem ascendet a nobis?

21 Miseruntque nuntios ad habitatores Cariathiarim, dicentes: Reduxerunt Philisthiim arcam Domini: descendite, et reducite eam ad vos.
