Chapître 4

1

But it displeased⁴ Jonah exceedingly, ⁷⁴⁵¹ and he was very angry.⁴

And he prayed¹⁰¹ unto the LORD, and said,⁴ I pray thee, O LORD, [was] not this my saying, when I was yet in my country? Therefore I fled² before¹⁴ unto Tarshish: for I knew¹ that thou [art] a gracious God, and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repentest¹² thee of the evil.

Therefore now, O LORD, take,³ I beseech thee, my life from me; for [it is] better for me to die than to live.

Then said⁴ the LORD, Doest thou well⁵³ to be angry?¹

So Jonah went out⁴ of the city, and sat⁴ on the east side of the city, and there made⁴ him a booth, and sat⁴ under it in the shadow, till he might see⁴ what would become of the city.

And the LORD God prepared¹⁷ a gourd, and made [it] to come up⁴ over Jonah, that it might be a shadow over his head, to deliver⁵³ him from his grief. So Jonah was exceeding ⁸⁰⁵⁷ glad⁴ of the gourd.

But God prepared¹⁷ a worm when the morning rose² the next day, and it smote⁵⁵ the gourd that it withered.⁴

And it came to pass, when the sun did arise,² that God prepared¹⁷ a vehement east wind; and the sun beat⁵⁵ upon the head of Jonah, that he fainted,¹⁰¹ and wished⁴ in himself to die,² and said,⁴ [It is] better for me to die than to live.

And God said⁴ to Jonah, Doest thou well⁵³ to be angry¹ for the gourd? And he said,⁴ I do well⁵³ to be angry,¹ [even] unto death.

Then said⁴ the LORD, Thou hast had pity¹ on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured,¹ neither madest it grow;¹⁴ which came up in a night, ³⁹¹⁵ and perished¹ in a night: ³⁹¹⁵

And should not I spare⁴ Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more⁵³ than sixscore ⁶²⁴⁰ thousand persons that cannot discern¹ between their right hand and their left hand; and [also] much cattle?
