Chapître 54

1

 Sing,³ O barren, thou [that] didst not bear;¹ break forth³ into singing, and cry aloud,¹⁶ thou [that] didst not travail with child:¹ for more [are] the children of the desolate⁶ than the children of the married wife,⁷ saith¹ the LORD.

 Enlarge⁵⁴ the place of thy tent, and let them stretch forth⁵⁵ the curtains of thine habitations: spare⁴ not, lengthen⁵⁴ thy cords, and strengthen¹⁶ thy stakes;

3

For thou shalt break forth⁴ on the right hand and on the left; and thy seed shall inherit⁴ the Gentiles, and make the desolate¹² cities to be inhabited.⁵⁵

 Fear⁴ not; for thou shalt not be ashamed:⁴ neither be thou confounded;¹¹ for thou shalt not be put to shame:⁵⁵ for thou shalt forget⁴ the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember⁴ the reproach of thy widowhood any more.

For thy Maker⁶ [is] thine husband;⁶ the LORD of hosts [is] his name; and thy Redeemer⁶ the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.¹¹

For the LORD hath called¹ thee as a woman forsaken⁷ and grieved⁷ in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused,¹¹ saith¹ thy God.

7

For a small moment have I forsaken¹ thee; but with great mercies will I gather¹⁷ thee.

8

In a little wrath I hid⁵² my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy¹⁴ on thee, saith¹ the LORD thy Redeemer.⁶

9

For this [is as] the waters of Noah unto me: for [as] I have sworn⁸ that the waters of Noah should no more go over² the earth; so have I sworn⁸ that I would not be wroth² with thee, nor rebuke² thee.

10

For the mountains shall depart,⁴ and the hills be removed;⁴ but my kindness shall not depart⁴ from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed,⁴ saith¹ the LORD that hath mercy¹⁸ on thee.

O thou afflicted, tossed with tempest,⁶ [and] not comforted,³⁰ behold, I will lay⁵⁶ thy stones with fair colours, and lay thy foundations¹ with sapphires.

12

And I will make¹ thy windows of agates, and thy gates of carbuncles, ⁶⁸⁸ and all thy borders of pleasant stones.

13

And all thy children [shall be] taught of the LORD; and great [shall be] the peace of thy children.

14

In righteousness shalt thou be established:¹¹³ thou shalt be far³ from oppression; for thou shalt not fear:⁴ and from terror; for it shall not come near⁴ thee.

15

Behold, they shall surely² gather together,⁴ [but] not by me: whosoever shall gather together¹ against thee shall fall⁴ for thy sake.

16

Behold, I have created¹ the smith that bloweth⁶ the coals in the fire, and that bringeth forth⁵⁶ an instrument for his work; and I have created¹ the waster⁵⁶ to destroy.¹⁵

17

No weapon that is formed⁹³ against thee shall prosper;⁴ and every tongue [that] shall rise⁴ against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn.⁵⁵ This [is] the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness [is] of me, saith⁷ the LORD.
