Chapître 22

1

A [good] name [is] rather to be chosen¹² than great riches, [and] loving favour rather than silver and gold.

2

The rich and poor⁶ meet⁸ together: the LORD [is] the maker⁶ of them all.

3

A prudent [man] foreseeth¹ the evil, and hideth^{8 5641 4} himself: but the simple pass on,¹ and are punished.⁸

 By humility [and] the fear of the LORD [are] riches, and honour, and life.

 Thorns [and] snares [are] in the way of the froward: he that doth keep⁶ his soul shall be far⁴ from them.

6

Train up³ a child in the way he should go: and when he is old,⁵⁵ he will not depart⁴ from it.

7

The rich ruleth⁴ over the poor,⁶ and the borrower⁵ [is] servant to the lender.⁵⁶

8

He that soweth⁶ iniquity shall reap⁴ vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.⁴

9

He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed;²⁹ for he giveth¹ of his bread to the poor.

10

Cast out¹⁵ the scorner,⁵ and contention shall go out;⁴ yea, strife and reproach shall cease.⁴

He that loveth⁶ pureness ²⁸⁸⁹ of heart, [for] the grace of his lips the king [shall be] his friend.

The eyes of the LORD preserve¹ knowledge, and he overthroweth¹⁷ the words of the transgressor.⁶

13

The slothful [man] saith,¹ [There is] a lion without, I shall be slain¹¹ in the streets.

14

The mouth of strange women⁵ [is] a deep pit: he that is abhorred⁷ of the LORD shall fall⁴ therein.

15

 Foolishness [is] bound⁷ in the heart of a child; [but] the rod of correction shall drive it far⁵⁵ from him.

16

He that oppresseth⁶ the poor to increase⁵³ his [riches, and] he that giveth⁶ to the rich, [shall] surely [come] to want.

17

Bow down⁵⁴ thine ear, and hear³ the words of the wise, and apply⁴ thine heart unto my knowledge.

18

For [it is] a pleasant thing if thou keep⁴ them within thee; they shall withal be fitted¹¹ in thy lips.

19

That thy trust may be in the LORD, I have made known⁵² to thee this day, even to thee.

20

Have not I written¹ to thee excellent things ⁸⁰³² in counsels and knowledge,

21

That I might make thee know⁵³ the certainty of the words of truth; that thou mightest answer⁵³ the words of truth to them that send⁶ unto thee?

 Rob⁴ not the poor, because he [is] poor: neither oppress¹⁷ the afflicted in the gate:

23

For the LORD will plead⁴ their cause, and spoil¹ the soul of those that spoiled⁶ them.

24

Make no friendship¹⁰¹ with an angry man; and with a furious man thou shalt not go:⁴

25

Lest thou learn⁴ his ways, and get¹ a snare to thy soul.

26

Be not thou [one] of them that strike⁶ hands, [or] of them that are sureties⁶ for debts.

27

If thou hast nothing to pay,¹⁵ why should he take away⁴ thy bed from under thee?

28

 Remove⁵⁵ not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.¹

29

 Seest¹ thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand¹⁰¹ before kings; he shall not stand¹⁰¹ before mean [men].
