Chapître 9

1

 Wisdom hath builded¹ her house, she hath hewn out¹ her seven pillars:

2

She hath killed¹ her beasts; she hath mingled¹ her wine; she hath also furnished¹ her table.

3

She hath sent forth¹ her maidens: she crieth⁴ upon the highest places ⁴⁷⁹¹ of the city,

Whoso [is] simple, let him turn in⁴ hither: [as for] him that wanteth understanding, she saith¹ to him,

5

 Come,³ eat³ of my bread, and drink³ of the wine [which] I have mingled.¹

6

 Forsake³ the foolish, and live;³ and go³ in the way of understanding.

7

He that reproveth⁶ a scorner⁵ getteth⁶ to himself shame: and he that rebuketh⁵⁶ a wicked [man getteth] himself a blot.

8

 Reprove⁵⁵ not a scorner,⁵ lest he hate⁴ thee: rebuke⁵⁴ a wise man, and he will love⁴ thee.

 Give³ [instruction] to a wise [man], and he will be yet wiser:⁴ teach⁵⁴ a just [man], and he will increase⁵⁵ in learning.

The fear of the LORD [is] the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy [is] understanding.

11

For by me thy days shall be multiplied,⁴ and the years of thy life shall be increased.⁵⁵

12

If thou be wise,¹ thou shalt be wise¹ for thyself: but [if] thou scornest,¹ thou alone shalt bear⁴ [it].

13

A foolish woman [is] clamorous:⁶ [she is] simple, and knoweth¹ nothing. ⁴¹⁰⁰

For she sitteth¹ at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,

To call² passengers^{6 1870} who go right¹⁸ on their ways:

Whoso [is] simple, let him turn in⁴ hither: and [as for] him that wanteth understanding, she saith¹ to him,

17

 Stolen⁷ waters are sweet,⁴ and bread [eaten] in secret is pleasant.⁴

18

But he knoweth¹ not that the dead [are] there; [and that] her guests⁷ [are] in the depths of hell.
