Chapître 56

1

To the chief Musician¹⁸ upon Jonathelemrechokim, ^{3123 482 7350} Michtam of David, when the Philistines took² him in Gath.
Be merciful³ unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up;¹ he fighting⁶ daily oppresseth⁴ me.

Mine enemies⁶ would daily swallow [me] up:¹ for [they be] many that fight⁶ against me, O thou most High.

3

What time I am afraid,⁴ I will trust⁴ in thee.

4

In God I will praise¹⁷ his word, in God I have put my trust;¹ I will not fear⁴ what flesh can do⁴ unto me.

Every day they wrest¹⁷ my words: all their thoughts [are] against me for evil.

6

They gather⁴ themselves together, they hide^{4 6845 55} themselves, they mark⁴ my steps, when they wait¹⁴ for my soul.

7

Shall they escape by iniquity? in [thine] anger cast down⁵⁴ the people, O God.

8

Thou tellest¹ my wanderings: put³ thou my tears into thy bottle: [are they] not in thy book?

9

 When I cry⁴ [unto thee], then shall mine enemies⁶ turn⁴ back: this I know;¹ for God [is] for me.

10

In God will I praise¹⁷ [his] word: in the LORD will I praise¹⁷ [his] word.

11

In God have I put my trust:¹ I will not be afraid⁴ what man can do⁴ unto me.

12

Thy vows [are] upon me, O God: I will render¹⁷ praises unto thee.

13

For thou hast delivered⁵² my soul from death: [wilt] not [thou deliver] my feet from falling, that I may walk⁹⁹ before God in the light of the living?
