Chapître 5

1

 Call³ now, if there be any that will answer⁶ thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn?⁴

2

For wrath killeth⁴ the foolish man, and envy slayeth⁵⁵ the silly one.⁶

3

I have seen¹ the foolish taking root:⁵⁶ but suddenly I cursed⁴ his habitation.

4

His children are far⁴ from safety, and they are crushed¹⁰¹ in the gate, neither [is there] any to deliver⁵⁶ [them].

5

Whose harvest the hungry eateth up,⁴ and taketh⁴ it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up¹ their substance.

6

Although affliction cometh not forth⁴ of the dust, neither doth trouble spring⁴ out of the ground;

7

Yet man is born²⁷ unto trouble, as the sparks ⁷⁵⁶⁵ fly² upward.⁵⁵

I would seek⁴ unto God, and unto God would I commit⁴ my cause:

9

Which doeth⁶ great things and unsearchable; ²⁷¹⁴ marvellous things¹² without number:

10

Who giveth⁶ rain upon the earth, and sendeth⁶ waters upon the fields:

11

To set up² on high those that be low; that those which mourn⁶ may be exalted¹ to safety.

12

He disappointeth⁵⁶ the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform⁴ [their] enterprise.

13

He taketh⁶ the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward¹² is carried headlong.¹²

14

They meet¹⁷ with darkness in the daytime, and grope¹⁷ in the noonday as in the night.

15

But he saveth⁵⁵ the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty.

16

So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth¹ her mouth.

17

Behold, happy [is] the man whom God correcteth:⁵⁵ therefore despise⁴ not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

18

For he maketh sore,⁵⁵ and bindeth up:⁴ he woundeth,⁴ and his hands make whole.⁴

19

He shall deliver⁵⁵ thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch⁴ thee.

20

In famine he shall redeem¹ thee from death: and in war from the power of the sword.

21

Thou shalt be hid¹¹ from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid⁴ of destruction when it cometh.⁴

22

At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh:⁴ neither shalt thou be afraid⁴ of the beasts of the earth.

23

For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace⁹⁰ with thee.

24

And thou shalt know¹ that thy tabernacle [shall be] in peace; and thou shalt visit¹ thy habitation, and shalt not sin.⁴

25

Thou shalt know¹ also that thy seed [shall be] great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.

26

Thou shalt come⁴ to [thy] grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in² in his season.

27

Lo this, we have searched¹ it, so it [is]; hear³ it, and know³ thou [it] for thy good.
