Chapître 2

1

And there went⁴ a man of the house of Levi, and took⁴ [to wife] a daughter of Levi.

2

And the woman conceived,⁴ and bare⁴ a son: and when she saw⁴ him that he [was a] goodly [child], she hid⁴ him three months.

3

And when she could¹ not longer hide⁵³ him, she took⁴ for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed⁴ it with slime and with pitch, and put⁴ the child therein; and she laid⁴ [it] in the flags by the river's brink.

And his sister stood¹⁰¹ afar off, to wit² what would be done¹¹ to him.

And the daughter of Pharaoh came down⁴ to wash² [herself] at the river; and her maidens walked⁶ along by the river's side; and when she saw⁴ the ark among the flags, she sent⁴ her maid to fetch⁴ it.

And when she had opened⁴ [it], she saw⁴ the child: and, behold, the babe wept.⁶ And she had compassion⁴ on him, and said,⁴ This [is one] of the Hebrews' children.

Then said⁴ his sister to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go⁴ and call¹ to thee a nurse ^{3243 56} of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse⁵⁵ the child for thee?

And Pharaoh's daughter said⁴ to her, Go.³ And the maid went⁴ and called⁴ the child's mother.

And Pharaoh's daughter said⁴ unto her, Take⁵⁴ this child away, and nurse⁵⁴ it for me, and I will give⁴ [thee] thy wages. And the woman took⁴ the child, and nursed⁵⁵ it.

And the child grew,⁴ and she brought⁵⁵ him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called⁴ his name Moses: and she said,⁴ Because I drew¹ him out of the water.

And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown,⁴ that he went out⁴ unto his brethren, and looked⁴ on their burdens: and he spied⁴ an Egyptian ³⁷⁶ smiting⁵⁶ an Hebrew, ³⁷⁶ one of his brethren.

And he looked⁴ this way and that way, and when he saw⁴ that [there was] no man, he slew⁵⁵ the Egyptian, and hid⁴ him in the sand.

13

And when he went out⁴ the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove¹² together: and he said⁴ to him that did the wrong, Wherefore smitest⁵⁵ thou thy fellow?

14

And he said,⁴ Who made¹ thee a prince and a judge⁶ over us? intendest⁶ thou to kill² me, as thou killedst¹ the Egyptian? And Moses feared,⁴ and said,⁴ Surely this thing is known.⁸

Now when Pharaoh heard⁴ this thing, he sought¹⁷ to slay² Moses. But Moses fled⁴ from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt⁴ in the land of Midian: and he sat down⁴ by a well.

Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters: and they came⁴ and drew⁴ [water], and filled¹⁷ the troughs to water⁵³ their father's flock.

17

And the shepherds⁶ came⁴ and drove them away:¹⁷ but Moses stood up⁴ and helped⁵⁵ them, and watered⁵⁵ their flock.

18

And when they came⁴ to Reuel their father, he said,⁴ How [is it that] ye are come² so soon¹⁴ to day?

19

And they said,⁴ An Egyptian ³⁷⁶ delivered⁵² us out of the hand of the shepherds,⁶ and also drew¹ [water] enough² for us, and watered⁵⁵ the flock.

20

And he said⁴ unto his daughters, And where [is] he? why [is] it [that] ye have left¹ the man? call³ him, that he may eat⁴ bread.

21

And Moses was content⁵⁵ to dwell² with the man: and he gave⁴ Moses Zipporah his daughter.

22

And she bare⁴ [him] a son, and he called⁴ his name Gershom: for he said,¹ I have been a stranger in a strange land.

23

And it came to pass in process ⁷²²⁷ of time, that the king of Egypt died:⁴ and the children of Israel sighed¹¹ by reason of the bondage, and they cried,⁴ and their cry came up⁴ unto God by reason of the bondage.

24

And God heard⁴ their groaning, and God remembered⁴ his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

25

And God looked⁴ upon the children of Israel, and God had respect⁴ unto [them].
