Le premier Livre de Moïse, appelé Genèse
Chapître 32
- 1
- And Jacob went1 on his way, and the angels of God met4 him.
- 2
- And when Jacob saw1 them, he said,4 This [is] God's host: and he called4 the name of that place Mahanaim.
- 3
- And Jacob sent4 messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.
- 4
- And he commanded17 them, saying,2 Thus shall ye speak4 unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith1 thus, I have sojourned1 with Laban, and stayed there4 until now:
- 5
- And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent4 to tell53 my lord, that I may find2 grace in thy sight.
- 6
- And the messengers returned4 to Jacob, saying,2 We came1 to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh6 to meet2 thee, and four hundred men with him.
- 7
- Then Jacob was greatly afraid4 and distressed:4 and he divided4 the people that [was] with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;
- 8
- And said,4 If Esau come4 to the one company, and smite52 it, then the other company which is left12 shall escape.
- 9
- And Jacob said,4 O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst6 unto me, Return3 unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well55 with thee:
- 10
- I am not worthy1 of the least of all the mercies, and of all the truth, which thou hast shewed1 unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over1 this Jordan; and now I am become two bands.
- 11
- Deliver54 me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he will come4 and smite52 me, [and] the mother with the children.
- 12
- And thou saidst,1 I will surely53 do thee good,55 and make1 thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered11 for multitude.
- 13
- And he lodged4 there that same night; and took4 of that which came6 to his hand a present for Esau his brother;
- 14
- Two hundred she goats, and twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams,
- 15
- Thirty milch56 camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls, twenty she asses, and ten foals.
- 16
- And he delivered4 [them] into the hand of his servants, every drove 5739 by themselves; and said4 unto his servants, Pass over3 before me, and put4 a space betwixt drove and drove.
- 17
- And he commanded17 the foremost, saying,2 When Esau my brother meeteth4 thee, and asketh1 thee, saying,2 Whose [art] thou? and whither goest4 thou? and whose [are] these before thee?
- 18
- Then thou shalt say,1 [They be] thy servant Jacob's; it [is] a present sent7 unto my lord Esau: and, behold, also he [is] behind us.
- 19
- And so commanded17 he the second, and the third, and all that followed6 310 the droves, saying,2 On this manner shall ye speak17 unto Esau, when ye find2 him.
- 20
- And say1 ye moreover, Behold, thy servant Jacob [is] behind us. For he said,1 I will appease17 him with the present that goeth6 before me, and afterward I will see4 his face; peradventure he will accept4 of me.
- 21
- So went the present over4 before him: and himself lodged1 that night in the company.
- 22
- And he rose up4 that night, and took4 his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven 259 sons, and passed over4 the ford Jabbok.
- 23
- And he took4 them, and sent them over55 the brook, and sent over55 that he had.
- 24
- And Jacob was left11 alone; and there wrestled11 a man with him until the breaking2 of the day.
- 25
- And when he saw4 that he prevailed1 not against him, he touched4 the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint,4 as he wrestled9 with him.
- 26
- And he said,4 Let me go,16 for the day breaketh.1 And he said,4 I will not let thee go,17 except thou bless14 me.
- 27
- And he said4 unto him, What [is] thy name? And he said,4 Jacob.
- 28
- And he said,4 Thy name shall be called11 no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power1 with God and with men, and hast prevailed.4
- 29
- And Jacob asked4 [him], and said,4 Tell54 [me], I pray thee, thy name. And he said,4 Wherefore [is] it [that] thou dost ask4 after my name? And he blessed17 him there.
- 30
- And Jacob called4 the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen1 God face to face, and my life is preserved.11
- 31
- And as he passed over1 Penuel the sun rose4 upon him, and he halted6 upon his thigh.
- 32
- Therefore the children of Israel eat4 not [of] the sinew which shrank, which [is] upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched1 the hollow of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank.
