THAMYRIS

an ancient Thracian bard, was a son of Philammon and the nymph Argiope. He went so far in his conceit as to think that he could surpass the Muses in song; in consequence of which he was deprived of his sight and of the power of singing. (Apollodorus i) He was represented with a broken lyre in his hand.
